It was my intention to buy the 12-40 and EM5.2. After fondling the EM5.2 that was a no go, hated the feel and the menu was maddening. Then tried the G85, loved the camera, but the 12-40 did not mate well to it, rotational play drove me crazy and when I compared it to the 12-35, well it was too big and heavy... Oly 12-40mm a no go for me. Then I bought the GH5 with the 12-35mm for Dual IS.. OMG! I am so happy I bought this combo, great stills and beautiful videos.... AND crazy features on the GH5. The Dual IS stabilization is incredible, it really is.

I tend to prefer Olympus glass including the 12-40. For stills I like the EM5ii (EM1ii is a bit overpriced for me). Video and user interface rule on the Panasonics. The new sensors and shutters on the GX85 and G85 are excellent, but I love Olympus colour science. Budget desert island rig: G85 and 12-40 Oly. Not too worried about Dual IS or Dual IS2. Just use good technique and support.

Paired with the GH5's IBIS the 12-40 gives very decent IS anyway. Olympus wins in all areas for me. Need greater IS with it? Put the GH5+12-40 in a cage with handles and IS is as good as the 12-35 v2 but you get to keep using the Oly!

Awesome video. I have the GH5s and I plan to mount an onboard mic and I am worried about autofocus noises being picked up by the mic. I just sent back the metabones xl adapter for my Canon glass because all of my EF lenses made a huge amount of focus noise that the onboard mic picked it up way too much for my taste. I am planning to use the 12-35 v2 or the Olympus 12-40 on a gimbal or a tripod for Quinceañeras and events like weddings. So, the stabilization in the lens is super nice and would be a nice to have feature but I keep thinking of the best quality video for my productions and the Olympus seems to edge out the Panasonics in this category. Can you provide feedback on the autofocus noise for both lenses. I have also heard that the Panasonic 12-35 v2 has pulsing issues when autofocus is engaged. I don't want or need that. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

I have had both the Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8 MK I and the Olympus 12-40 and ended up switching to the 12-40 as my main lens. I found the Olympus corner to corner sharpness was overall better than the 12-35 which I noticed on my GH5 had noticeable softer edges at 12mm even stopped down to f/4 and the edge softness was what made me switch as I shoot a lot of landscapes and needed better edge to edge sharpness. I also noticed the 12-35 has a bit more saturated colors than the 12-40mm. One thing I like about the 12-40mm is that it can shoot closer to the subject than the 12-35. I often shoot landscapes, wild plants and insects so I bought an Olympus 60mm Macro and with the look of the images being very similar between the 12-40 and 60mm, they make the perfect two lenses for me that I use the most when I don't need ultra wide angle or telephoto.

Thank you for the video. My wife enjoys taking pictures of waves breaking over rocks so it is very useful in my search. After a lot of searching, the color detail that we like for the waves is the G9 + PL 42.5. It's very difficult to find a wide lens or wide zoom that color matches it. It doesn't really seem like any of these 3 lenses have the color rendering capability but maybe I am wrong or need to settle for less. Thanks for any insights

I sold my Olympus 12-40 to buy the Panasonic 12-35 version I or II (I have a Panasonic G9). I like the smaller size of the Panasonic lenses which is why I like the MFT system to begin with (I realize the G9 is a bigger MFT camera but paired with the Pansonic lenses it is significantly smaller and lighter than a full frame or crop setup). Whether I buy used or new the version II is a couple of hundred dollars more expensive. I don't take a whole lot of video so is the Panasonic version II worth the extra money for a hobbyist stills photographer with a G9 that already has IBIS anyway?

Stupid question, but I can't find this anywhere on the web. I'm going to purchase one of these lenses to use on a gimbal with a follow focus to adjust zoom. I own the Olympus 12-100, and the zoom is too firm to work with my follow focus motor. Is there a noticeable difference in the firmness of the zoom lenses between these two lenses? Is one lens easier to zoom than the other?

You mentioned the fly-by-wire focus resetting the focus when you turn the camera off or swap lenses on the GH5. If you are just turning the camera off, the focus will remain the same when you turn the camera off and turn it back on. All you have to do is turn on the "Lens Position Resume" feature. This is found on the "Lens/Others" section of the "c/wrench" menu.
@MMaven
@MMaven 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment. Yes, its true some cameras, like the GH5 have this specific feature, however when you swap batteries out (and I do a lot) it doesn't maintain it. If you remove the battery without powering the camera down, it can even reset the feature in the menu. Also I cannot take them off the camera and place them back while maintaining at least a general focus. Maybe Im old school and just like a good old AF/MF switch on the side of a lens. :)

Did you encounter micro jitters/image instability with the V2? That's what you hear a lot. I have the Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO, it came in the E-M1 kit, so I've been using that. It's a bit beafier though and there's some inherent advantages to using a native brand lens on your camera, so if I were to upgrade the GH4 to GH5, I figured I might want to consider a kit option with the new 12-35. It that will ever be a thing.
@MMaven

Im not seeing any jitters when just shooting, most of what I have heard was it was related to zooming in. I tested both lenses in one day. The Olympus is much better. Those extra 20mm in Panasonic are unhelpful. But quality of photos on olympus is higher. Also I testes modern mirrorless cameras like Lumix S1 and Nikon Z5. Of course, photos from new cameras are more detailed, autofocus is better. But not too much for to pay a lot for updating m4/3 system to something new.

I also have the Olympus 40-150 pro and man is the build quality on that lens impressive! I might pick up the Olympus 12-40 one day, but it will have to be when I get rid of the gx8 and upgrade to the gx9 or em5 mk iii because the ibis on my GX8 stinks. The ibis on the g85 is impressive. I can easily hand hold the Olympus pro zoom at 150 and 210mm with mc14 converter at 1/20 of a second.

Right now B and H has it new on sale for 699.00. Camera wise (I am predominantly a stills photographer), should I pick up the OMD EM1 Mark II or wait for the Pany G9? (I'm really leaning towards the G9 for the 6K photo) 2. If I go with the G9, is it worth picking up the Pany 12-35 v1 or v2...if I'm doing mostly stills? Any suggestions or comments would greatly help. Thank you all in advance.

It's also unfortunate that they promised Dual I.S. 2.0 for the V1, but then recanted that statement later on. Probably marketing told the tech department: 'it's marvelous that you guys managed to make V1 Dual I.S. 2.0 compatible... but we've got lenses to sell, so: NO!'. It's a small thing, but I really don't like the old dark purple-ish styling of the V1. :P The new one is supposed to have smoother iris control too. I'd only get it as a kit (with roughly 300 bucks shaved off), at 999 it's definitely not priced where it needs to be.

I don’t miss the extra reach of the 12-35 cause I still own it and use it. The Leica 12mm is not a replacement for that length and each video shoot has different needs. The lowlight of the Leica 12mm is amazing and has made dark video locations possible

The hardest part about what I am looking for is trying to find a Wide, Fast, and Stable lens (on a GH5) with a long enough mm to create the depth for photography and still be able to vlog with enough speed to handle dark settings while also being able to stabilize when needed. (understanding the in house stabilization). Something about the Lumix 7-14 (which is commonly used on the GH5 by vloggers) bugs me. Distortion, slowness for dark settings, and I can't put my finger on it, but it doesn't look anywhere near as good as say the Olympus 12-40 (could be light amount differences). However, it has it's major strong suits for focus, width, and movement. Anyone else have suggestions for a well balanced lens for both deep looking stills and stable/low light vlog-ability for a GH5 without having to slap on a speedbooster? I know there is no perfect lens, but MAN it's so hard to find that right balance of versatility in one lens for both Stills and moving Video. Great comprehensive video by the way Michael. Easy to watch and very informative.

It's a good lens but way overpriced, the claimed idea with m4/3rd lenses is they cost cost less to make than apsc or ff lenses, but in reality they cost almost the same

grat video :) but 2,8 on 4/3 = 5,6 on FF ... no way, not true ... :) ... you can say only this - DOF on FF on 2,8 = 2xDOF on 4/3 2,8 ... for simple example 1cm front/1cm back is 2cm front/2cm back ... :)

The depth of field does not change. A 50mm focal length [for example] gives the same depth of field regardless of the sensor size. The reason why it's harder to get a shallow depth of field on M4/3 cameras is because we have to use shorter focal lengths to fit everything we want in the frame.

True the lens optics do not change with the format, however the equivalent is effective at what was stated. This is why I say things like "behave like". I kindly suggest you read up on "equivalence" if you are unfamiliar.

Does it make a difference if you're using a focal reducer? I have an old canon FD 50mm f1.4 on my Panasonic G7 with a Roxen adapter/focal reducer. Of course the crop factor is definitely not 2X. I'm guessing it's shooting at around 65-75mm. Do you think that the "equivalent" on depth of field will still be 2X? Seems to me that the depth of field is incredibly shallow.

m4/3 system is TOTAL garbage. Overpriced, shitty lenses for HUGE price. You can buy 3 canon lenses for the same price.
