Have both Mk1's and they've seen life on my GH3, then GH4 and now GH5. The 35-100 must be one the most underrated lenses and you are the first to mention just how good a portrait lens it is - which it is. These reliably get good shots ina huge range of conditions.
@artjohnson015 жыл бұрын
I’ve got so many lenses that cover that short to portrait distance. Rokinon 12mm 2.0, Pana kit 14-42mm, and Pana 25mm f1.7. Hard to justify tossing them for this, but the thought of ONE lens for all this focal distance is appealing. On the other hand, that 35-100 covers a lot of ground and outside of my 42.5 f1.7 (maybe my favorite lens), seems a practical focal distance for walking around. Yup, I’ve convinced myself!!

The dark purple black of the Mk I lenses is one of my favorite aspects of these lenses. I bought them in 2012 and 2013 and they have been hugely useful for corporate, event and doc work. With a couple of very fast primes, you're covered for almost anything apart from long distance wildlife or specialised wide angle shooting.

I got a 12-35 MKII last year and have been loving it with my BMPCC 4K. It’s fantastic to have that portability and lightweight setup. Many people rig and adapt other lenses to this camera but I opted to stay in the MFT system because of particulaly these options for picking up professional shots without being noticed even in really forbidden places to film professionally.

I have the 35-100 Mk2, more for travel than anything else. I still don't feel that I have really connected with it, but looking back I can't say it's ever disappointed me, took some great pictures with it. I went to Arizona in the Spring, took the 35-100, the 8-18, and the Oly 25mm for low light. I did miss not having a longer lens occasionally, but I didn't miss the extra weight that bringing the 40-150 or 200mm would have entailed.

Yes, same for me. 100mm is a bit short in some situations. But I really appreciate the constant aperture. I purchased it to complement my 12-60 and it does the job. btw Got the mk II second hand at 700 Euros in my local shop. You can also find good opportinities in camera stores.

the mk2's are also frostproofed, the mk1's aren't. i have had some problems with the o-rings/seals sort of sticking and making the zoom sticky... upgraded both and my problems were gone. ... a more winter-fit lens, and, as you said: sharper, more stable, more weathersealed.

I too have never noticed any particular issues with flare but I usually leave a circular polariser attached.

Bought the 12-35 mk1 when the MK2 was announced and for me it's never disappointed. I pair it with my Olympus em1 mk2 (so not concerned about dual stabilisation) and it works great. Colours, contrast and sharpness are very satisfying. I use it for the occasional event and for family and friends functions and am always very happy with the results. For its size it's a heavy hitter. I do nowadays switch off the lens stabilisation and rely on the Oly body which has given me better results at low speeds (I have lens priority set on camera for my 100-400 PL) . If I'm going to be in extra low light I'll switch to a 1.2 or a 1.4 prime if I really need to or use my godox tt685o flashes. Thanks for the video 😀

OK-- so,, I followed your advice and began watching Ebay and GearFocus and local forums and found a nice boxed series I for $340US.. Absolutely love it. My work just bought an Olympus 45-150 2.8 (which some consider the "Halo" MFT telephoto) so I've made a few comparisons.. The Panasonic is a true to what the MFT system is about ,,Compact and light--and center area is pin sharp at all focal lengths and f-stops. Stop down to f4- f8 and the Lumix is as good as you can get. The Olympus is considerably more to lug about and weatherproof-- IF,, you were absolutely critical for edge to edge sharpness in ALL situations-- the Olympus has an edge... also, the Olympus has a matched 2X that you can use to add versatility with only a very tiny quality compromise,,but the Olympus is 3X the cost,,, even used. I would also say the Olympus has an edge in out-of-the -camera color...nothing that you can't tweek in post. My 2 cents worth -- I think your evaluation of this lens as a high performance bargain is spot on..

I looked at both these lenses but when comparing them to the Olympus Pro 12-40 and 40-150 they just couldn't compete (for me). The Olympus lenses have better range and much closer focusing, the manual focus clutch and the overall feel of a better quality product. Yes they lose out on larger size and no dual IS but I find the 12-40 a perfect match to my GX8 and the 40-150 on my em5 mkII with the added grip is a joy to use, I love the tripod mount both for tripod use and as a handle for hand holding. There's also the 1.4 and 2.0 tele convertors for the 150, making it even more versatile. At the time I bought them there was very little price difference and I even got the 1.4 TC thrown in to sweeten the deal.

Great video and timely for me. I have gx9 with 12-60 kit lens. I am liking the images ok and in love with the sepia video but the zoom on the lens is too stiff. And this is where your lens reviews come in, watched them all a couple of times. Your vids have helped me move from where to start, to maybe i could skip a few car payments and buy that lens, to what do i really want and where to look for it. I know how much time and work these videos take but once done they are timeless, because now we all know, old lenses hang around for years and eBay is their karma 😁

I bought the 12-35 recently after comparing with my 14-42 pancake and the Olympus 12-40. For me the smaller size and weight beat the Olympus and the f2.8 constant aperture beat the pancake (although I kept it for video work). The difference between v1 and v2 was irrelevant compared to the price difference. The 35-100 didn't tempt me away from my 45-175 though. At that length f2.8 isn't an issue but weight and size are, as well as the extra reach. As for IQ I found the X Power zooms, when stopped to f8, just as capable as the "pro" lenses, just not as solidly built(but a lot lighter).

Even at CEX ....Either mounted on a tripod with stabilisation off (stabilisation does I think creates "noise" and degrades images...)...downside is increased weight and size ...But images have more contrast and detail ...I use G100..likely a G9 or GH5 would push up quality (?) and offer as good as anything shown on KZbin at sub £1k....
@DarkTrapStudio11 ай бұрын
For video the stabilisation is really better and a bit of the focus too, but it seems to be the only 2 better thing. I think the sharpness is the same but the software in the mark2 add a bit of contrast, for stills make no sens to upgrade.

Coming from other hobbies and things, it never ceases to amuse me when photographers refer to $300+ prices as "bargains" or "cheap" :D I get why that is, being a hobbiyst photographer myself, but some photography gear is just flat out horrendously priced and wouldn't be worth it in the LEAST, if there weren't high-level pros who just buy anything without even looking at price tags. (I'm looking at you tripods, most of those are so ridiculously priced it's not even funny). I'm just happy Chinese occasionally come up with stupidly cheap lenses for the rest of us. And used non-pro lenses are actually sometimes cheap.

The purplish anodizing is just weird. From what I understand, my Mark 1 lenses don't provide the 5-axis stabilization that the Mark 2 lenses provide. It's not just a matter of "stops" of stabilization, it's the directions of camera movement that can be stabilized. The performance of my lenses is good enough, so I haven't rationalized getting the new versions. I do suggest that anyone buying a used 12-32mm be sure the focusing ring is working smoothly. The lubrication on these is minimal, and mine got very difficult to turn. I found several reports of the same problem online. I was able to use a little silicone lubricant to partially restore smooth operation, but this is one side effect of poor weather sealing. To really fix the ring, I'd need to have the lens serviced (I'm not about to take it apart myself). My 35-100mm hasn't had the same problem, but it gets used less frequently. Any bargain needs to be weighed against the functional problems and the potential cost of repair. I don't know about UK depots, but Panasonic repair prices are very expensive stateside. These aren't old-school mechanical lenses. The focusing ring is focus-by-wire and I half expected to kill the electronic rotation sensor when I added lubricant.
@carriestarscapemedia4 жыл бұрын
I love my 12-35 mk 1 but I've had the same issue with the focus ring. I think mine has been stiff since I purchased the lens new way back when. I didn't even realize how rough it was until using a friend's identical lens once. By that time it was too late to cash in a covered service repair on mine. Would love to know if you found a good fix, or if you know how much it costs to send them off for repair.

I've "inherited" the 35-100 mark 1 from my brother. He switched to the olympus 40-150 f2.8. The 35-100 is my favorite lens though. It's tiny for a 70-200 f2.8 lens, no extension while zooming, excellent optical quality, only about 400g, good build quality.... With these qualities I do not even know what they could have improved on the mark 2? Maybe the OIS, which I mostly don't use on my olympus cameras (as no sync OIS is possible between Oly and panasonic - a real pity Oly and pana couldn't agree on a interoperability here).

I bought both MkI lenses when they were brand new out. Paid something like £900 for the 12-35. Never regretted it. Superb lenses both. I can’t comment on the IS2?stabilisation difference. I highly doubt that the MKII achieves a higher sharpness optically by any other means than stabilisation. The optical layout and mechanical operation is identical. They’ll be made on the same production line and the tooling will have worn a bit by now. Early examples of anything mechanically engineered are always best.

There's also a slight difference in how they treat aperture changes in video. There's not much difference between mk 1 mk 2 for photographers just some slight quality of life improvements for videographers. So , as you said , it makes the Mk1's a great deal for photogs. Both are good lenses. The Panasonic needs a touch more pampering so I finally dropped it in favour of a cheap Olympus 25 when one appeared in the classifieds but it did a very good interim meanwhile. I prefer the Olympus rendering in the end, but the Panasonic is good enough, and it doesn't really lose value either, so in case you find yourself an Olympus later, you will get your money back on it. Another Panasonic lens I love is the diminutive P14/2.5 ; a the current 2nd hand price it's a bargain. It's not a "great" lens, but it's my goto street photography lens. So small no-one takes notice.

I'm torn between picking up the 35-100mm 2.8 or fork up double the amount of money and get the 25-50mm 1.7. I understand they're not direct comparisons to each other, but having the 12-35mm 2.8, I feel like I'm lacking in the telephoto department, and sometimes would long for the "compression" look that telephoto brings. I'm not sure if the 25-50mm 1.7 is enough "zoom" to give that compressed look I'm after, but it sure sounds like a very good lens for portraiture and with aperture as wide as f1.7, it should be better in low light as well!

Hello. I think that this video is relevant even now, after 4 years :) The story is the same. The MK II variant from 12-35mm f:2.8 and 35-100mm f:2.8 is not cost-effective considering that the difference compared to MK I is very, very small. In conclusion, switching from Full Frame to APSC and then to MFT, and having experience with many series of photo lenses, I decided to purchase the MK I version of the two Lumix lenses mentioned above. I have used PL 12-60 and oly 12-40 and I can say the manual focus clutch is very, very nice for video on the 12-40. Focus by wire, especially on certain lenses is very difficult to use for video (focus pulling etc.) I prefer the 12-40 nowadays. The 12-60 is collecting dust =D Haven't used the pl 12-35 but I suspect a similar experience with its fly-by-wire focusing. The oly 12-40 manual focus clutch is almost as good as a fully manual focus (got a mitakon 25mm for comparison)

I wonder if you have a video or plan to, about the computer/laptop/whatever you used to edit your photos, I noticed you have a Mac. Any suggestions?
@MicroFourNerds5 жыл бұрын
I’m really quite boring with my editing computers, I just invest in a new Mac every few years to keep the processing power up to speed. I got the late 2017 i7 version of the 21” imac last year, so I’m hoping it’ll last me a good while. Prior to that I had a 17” MacBook Pro from 2011 😱 it worked surprisingly well given how old it was, I think I edited my first 50 videos or so on it. But then moving properly to 4K made it very slow

Hi, Thanks for another great video. I have a question that so far I couldn't find the answer for on the Internet. How is focusing (by wire) working on these lenses, f.i. on MKII (which I have), there is this very annoying feature, when you move the ring a little bit faster, the focus jumps, when you try to move the ring slower - the focus is very, very slow. It's really annoying in the video, to the point I'm considering to sell both lenses (12-35mkii and 35-100mkii). Does this happen on old version too? I have an old version of 14-140 and focus works perfectly fine, that's why I'm so disappointed with the new revision of Panasonic's flagship zooms.
@MicroFourNerds5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the fly by wire focus is a common feature on both the Mki and mkii and most m43 lenses
@screamingfilms5 жыл бұрын
@@MicroFourNerds Thank you for replying. I wish Panasonic could add an option for 'constant speed' focusing without this annoying acceleration, but probably it's just wishful thinking. I was hoping that maybe an old version of these zooms focus at least the same way as Panasonic 14-140mm, at least on that lens I feel that I have more control. I cannot say the same about 12-35mm mk2 and 35-100mm mk2, it was a real pain to work with them on the run-gun situation with lifestreaming from the camera during the show.

I'm going to switch into micro 4/3rds and have a budget of ~$1000-1200. I'm very new to micro 4/3s but have been finding many lens videos and narrowed down to these 3 I would ideally like to start with: 12-35mm mkii and 45mm f1.8. Anyone have recommendations for a kit to get? I do primarily portrait and travel photography and just need to find a camera body within this budget.
@tmstone8355 жыл бұрын
The Oly 45mm 1.8 is a great close quarters portrait lens or indoor studio lens and you can pick them up at reasonable used prices. The Sigma 60mm 2.8 is, for me, nicer when I'm outdoors and I picked one up on the Sigma refurbished site for $150US. I get more working distance from the subject which makes them more comfortable and it is incredibly sharp with beautiful bokeh. Their newer 56mm 1.4 should be amazing, too. The Oly 75mm 1.8 is fantastic but it always seems just a little too long and they are pricey. If you don't need the 20mpx sensor, look at the 16mpx GX85 or the G85 (US versions). They are still selling new but at fantastic prices. They work with Dual IS. They both do great 4K video but lack some of the more advanced video features such as headphone jacks and no external mic jack on the GX85.

@carriestarscapemedia4 жыл бұрын
I had both lenses. Never tested them side by side but I was generally pleased with the sharpness of both. However, the Leica felt like a more substantial lens with it's size, build quality, and much smoother focus ring. I think my 12-35 has a slight focus ring issue as it has always been a bit difficult to maneuver. I do love the 12-35 though, for its compactness and constant 2.8 aperture. In the end, the 12-35 won out on that feature alone and I sold the 12-60.

hi all, after selling all my nikon FF & crop cameras & lenses because of the weight , i bought an XT2 alot lighter, but now coming across to MFT because i still cant be bothered to pick up the XT2 & hang it around my neck so fuji gear is all for sale . I like the look of the G9 but wondering if i get the GX9 would i use it more, as i can pick it up & stick it in my pocket.& mybe G9 later if i like the system. sorry for the ramble. My question is if i bought let say 12-35 & 35-100 F2.8 would i get the same results with the GX9 as i would with the G9 ? ( picture wise , don't really do video) big difference or would it be negligible ? thanks all
@dzeng5 жыл бұрын
Yes you would get the same results. I have both the g9 and gx9. I use the gx9 way more than the g9 because it's lighter and easier to bring anywhere with. However, I've had more shots with the g9 because of its high burst ability. I used the g9 primarily for the occasional action/sports shots where I think it will make a difference but all other scenarios I much prefer the gx9.

@carriestarscapemedia4 жыл бұрын
I had both and just sold the Leica. I honestly liked the focus ring on the Leica a lot better than the 2.8 - it had a lot more give to it - and the build quality of both was good. The Leica felt more substantial though, albeit a bit heavier and larger in general. In the end I decided it didn't make sense to keep both since they were in the same focal range. I sold the Leica in favor of the consistent 2.8 aperture.
@glsracer4 жыл бұрын
@@carriestarscapemedia yeah, I really like the zoom range of the Leica 12-60 but the fact that it starts closing down as soon as you move past 12 mm is a bit annoying in low light situations. I guess it depends on when and what you shoot. I do more shots outdoors and having the 120 mm long end has been super valuable on many occasions. If I did more weddings and indoor events then the 12-35 f/2.8 would be a no brainer.
@carriestarscapemedia4 жыл бұрын
glsracer yeah the range of the 12-60 is nice! I opted to get the 35-100 when I sold it though, so it was a roughly “fair trade” for more reach.

Hey, nice vid! Here's my predicament. I want one of either this lens or the sigma 18-35 (heard its a popular choice). I already have the 25mm 1.7. I don't have a gimbal so ideally the 12-35 would be ideal but I like the sharpness of the 18-35 and the lowlight performance. How is the 12-35 in low light and for stills?
@MicroFourNerds5 жыл бұрын
It isn’t quite as fast as the sigma, though you will need a speed booster to make the sigma work which will add to the cost significantly and the overall weight and size of the sigma plus speed booster is massive! It won’t even fit on most gimbals because it is so front heavy.

Four years to answer your question is a long time. I own both the GX8 and GX9. First of all, the GX9 is an upgrade from the GX7 and in Japan is marketed as the GX7Miii. The GX8 problem you elude to is probably shutter shock. LUMIX did a software fix. At certain shutter speeds the body automatically uses the electronic shutter. The GX9 is a little smaller and noticeably lighter than the GX8. It isn’t weather sealed nor have a microphone jac like the GX8. I love the GX9 so much I bought a 2nd body. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
