Jamie here, owner of the player.....guilty as charged for the super glue and foil...my hack worked for a year after both buttons stopped working, but never thought the foil would come off and therefore cause a short circuit. I was happy with my hack but, and this is why I am kicking myself. I have a second Panasonic with only a hard disk recorder and no dvd payer and guess what....Its an identical remote.....and I never thought to try it incase it was the remote. This is why I watch your channel, you have a logical step by step approach to problem solving......Many thanks for what you have done. I will now source some of the IP fluid use to clean up remotes as and when they stop working.

I wash the case and the mat with colored washing powder and rinse it with clean water. I clean the board with “Kontakt WL” (or similar) because it dissolves the dirt better than pure IPA. Then I wipe the circuit board with “Kontakt WL” and a paper tissue. The graphite contacts on the mat then also with "Kontakt WL" and cotton swab. If cleaning the mat no longer helps, then I used "Kontakt Graphit 33", but I no longer work for this*** company, so unfortunately I can't say anything about the durability of the product for this purpose. Cleaning has been enough for me so far. So I haven't been able to test it myself yet. Maybe there will be an opportunity to test the graphite powder. greetings from Germany!🙂 IMPORTANT EDIT: *** Translation error, I have NEVER worked for Kontakt in any way! I quit the job where I used the stuff before any results or feedback was given on how long it lasted.

@@BuyitFixit Another dirty deed, done dirt cheap. Well done. Down here on the 'udder side' of the world you can buy a superglue designed for plastics that regular supergle formulations do not adhere to. It was the only thing I found that would glue small sections of coloured plastic milk bottle tops to the silicone buttons of a remote (for a stroke affected person to find certain buttons). It was still sticking the plastic to the buttons 6 years later when it was no longer required. Took a bit of force to break the bond. Very good glue for many types of plastic. No doubt you'll have a local equivalent, and you might even be able to add graphite to it too. Keep up the great work.
@EddieTheGrouch
@EddieTheGrouch Ай бұрын
Mixing the graphite/carbon into the paint or glue encapsulates the grains lowering conduction. Mix too much and it lowers adhesion. Simply apply the adhesive and sprinkle or dab the powder on top and tamp it into the glue. Brush off excess when dry. I file or sand pencils and old motor brushes for conductive material.

The dirty silicon button membrane may have been a manufacturing defect that causes silicon oil sweat. Ive had this before with a few Toshiba brand remotes, and it caused the button contacts to fail over time, and leave a sticky residue. Sometimes a good wipe down with a soft cloth is all that is needed to restore function. Great video, I could see that repair going down a rabbit hole if you didnt catch on to the remote control problem early.

Something cheap and easy to do for picking up IR (or any light really) is to take a simple IR receiver device and on the output tie on an LED, a 3-5 volt supply would work for the power source and you can have a tie off for a scope to see the signal. I did something like this a long time ago with an analog-digital trainer kit and a scope to test various LED's and light sources to learn just what IR receivers can do and was surprised by the wide array of light sources they can sense for the clear style.

There is a company I have purchased product that works really well on restoring remotes. Called Buttonworx, from USA. They actually sell membranes that are applied to the CONTACT side of remote board and therefore give more height so flexible button works. Have used them on vintage Reel to Reel AKAI push buttons as well as remotes. The problem with most "paint" applied fixes ( and they are not cheap) is that they crack , dry out and deteriorate and stop working after a while.

What a great find on that graphite and silicon mixture. Also not all spillage is actual spillage in remote. I love Logitech Harmony remotes and wear the pads out and before I discovered silver paint on paper stuck with the same silicon you used I purchased 3 Harmony remotes but used only 1. When I wore 2 out I got the last one and some of the buttons never worked from new, took the remote apart and it was wet and a little sticky inside just like something had been spilled in it, but it was brand new and only out of the box less than half an hour. I have also tried them replacement pads but you have to shave off a small amount of the original remote. I have since been using silver conductive paint on paper then hole punched with one of those punches made for leather and stick that on with silicon, lasted over a year so far.

Here's one to keep in mind... I was repairing a Solar LED Flood Light. The IR Receiver Optocoupler Transistor, for the remote control, was working. However, it had lost its ability to recognize the 38KHz "carrier" identification frequency. This frequency is to prevent false readings from ambient light. Because the transistor was partially working, it was confusing the MCU. Who knew that IR remote controls have a "carrier" frequency? It is not exactly a carrier frequency, but that is the best way to describe it, by typing it out.

Best way to test to see if it’s caps when they don’t look bad is to take a hair dryer and warm them up and see if the issue goes away, I got a free 4kuhd player off of Facebook marketplace a while back that needed new caps even though they looked fine and this was how I figured out they were bad
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit Ай бұрын
Nice 👍 Yes good advice. I've done this myself with a hair dryer too in the past. You can also do the opposite by waiting until something warms up, and when it starts showing the fault, cool caps / components down with freezer spray until you locate the one that is causing the issue.

One good test I thought you would have tried is to just remove the batteries from the remote while the DVD Player was switched on. This is why Philips have a "get ready" command they send before it send the actual command. It first tell the device to get ready to receive the command. So, if you hold a button down and cover the remote with your hand and then remove the hand the device will not accept any remote signals. You need to release the button and press it again.

Back in the day, I had one of the ATI All-In-Wonder Pro cards for my PC so I could watch and record TV from my desktop. That little bugger used not an IR remote, but a radio frequency remote. It would control my music 2 floors away from my computer room. RF remotes are far superior in my never humble opinion. In fact, I still have one of the All-In-Wonder remotes on my shelf here - new in box. I'm certain I could use it right now if I fancied.

When I wash remote controls I use plain warm water and soap. That's what given me the best results. Depending on how hard it was to dry it with compressed air after I'd use a little IPA if there was a lot of IC's that some water could be hiding under. :) I do wish I had what we used to have at the repair shop i used to work for, it was like a nail polisher size bottle with some stuff you placed on the pad to make it conductive again. :) It worked like a charm. :) Im sure you can get something like that today too but dont remember what its name was. Edit: If i watch to the end before writing I'd see that you actually used conductive paint :P Points for creativity with trying to making your own :D. When applying the conductive paint is to use some sand paper and rough it up a little and then put a drop of conductive paint onto the surface so that it become flat again. :)

Very interesting fault and fix. Without that indicator light in this device, would be pretty hard to guess that shorted remote controller is transmitting something at all times, and causing problems to the device itself. I've noticed that some cameras don't show the IR signal in remote controllers, but some others do. Found it out while working on my own remote controllers. Tested my 80's Salora TV remote controller, because only some buttons at the top row work, but majority don't, and from the working buttons, the IR signal showed up in my Samsung phone camera, but for some reason, not in my older Canon videocamera. Have been cleaning button contacts from my TV remote controllers few times, and also Playstation 1 controller, especially the Start and sometimes Select buttons seem to be the first ones to stop working reliably, other buttons work better. For some reason, my vhs and dvd remote controllers have never needed any cleaning, even they are already over 20 years old.

@@BuyitFixit Indeed haven't noticed stick drift in my PS1 analog controller, have had it from new since 1999. Bought my PS2 used in 2017, and seems the controller has been heavily used, especially left stick has physical wear on top of it, and they don't move perfectly smoothly, and may drift a bit if not centered carefully. Most likely could improve gaming experience by replacing the analog stick mechanism on the pcb.

You can buy a much better paint, its like thickish watery coal and you just coat the old carbon pad and it dries just like the pad would have been, lasts quite well too as I did my CyberSnipa gaming pad a couple of times as I would knacker the 3 number button as it was the most used in World of Warcraft I used to play and 3 and 4 the carbon pads just wore out but this stuff I bought just made them come back like new.

I bought the very first model they made with BR Recorder. Now the tuner doesn’t see half our channels due to them changing how they broadcast. There doesn’t happen to be a fix for that does there? Some way to upgrade the tuner? Reprogram it? Annoying as it cost almost $2400 AUD at the time
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit Ай бұрын
I'm not sure on that one. It depends on what changed. If the original tuner is still compatible hardware wise then you would need to extract, reverse engineer and try to patch the software if there is no update available. If you change the tuner then the same would probably apply for the machine to control the new tuner.

@@BuyitFixit pretty much a throw away then. I feel Panasonic need to provide tuner upgrades for when this happens. They have been slowly changing most of our digital stations. At first we lost two channels, now we have lost 8. @@rudolphvanthoff1391 Yes, it's a bit of a bummer. This type of thing seems to be happening more and more, especially with internet connected gadgets.
