Awesome video, good jokes, scanlines look terrific, it helps a lot of sets when you spend a few days with the setting and like you mentioned dropping brightness and other levels to a more moderate level also relieves the stress on tube prolonging life possibly. If you can dim the lights while playing that will help scanlines emerge. By the looks of this set it would definitely be a keep on going type of guy, honestly wouldn’t have believed it has component at all, it looks like a late 80s model and it would only accept coaxial! I’m going to get it in a couple of days and I’m stoked. I will say I slightly disagree that the chassis design is ugly. Plain, sure, but everything looks decently proportioned and stuff. I got a CT27D11 brand new in like 2001 and used that as my home theater TV for a few years till i gave it to my brother and then he just... left it at his friends house he moved out of when they were selling it. RIP. He didn't want to have to deal with it at and that was before CRTs switched from "plentiful" to "legitimately and increasingly rare" so I don't really blame him. 27" non-flat tubes with component in are really holy grails these days - they may not be as sharp as sony PVMs and other pro displays, but they're typically larger (more friendly to play games from a couch across the room rather than crowding around) and were at least for a time easier to find for a low or zero price. But even that well has dried up...
@riggel8804 Жыл бұрын
yeah. I watched it all happen. I picked up pro monitors for free back around 2014. No one cared about them back then. Then that dried up and I started picking up high end consumer sets. That dried up about 2 years ago. At this point, if you want a crt you better just pick up whatever you can. CRTs are cool but these days there are other options. Back around 2010 if you wanted low input latency you needed a crt. It's not like that any more.
@Cowclops Жыл бұрын
@@riggel8804 For sure - I played all the way through FF6 on an analogue super NT and a CX48 oled which i use as my computer monitor. Thats low latency, and great motion clarity (even better than CRT) thanks to black frame insertion - plus a much bigger screen and no screen linearity issues. Not a lot of drawbacks to playing games that way. But I also have it hooked up to a 20" PVM (20L2) in my basement for when i need maximum CRT nostalgia. I got that right around the turning point where it wasn't trivial to get them for free, but a nice 600 line PVM was like $250 on ebay (I didn't do local pickup but strategically went for one that was only in NH so it was a short trip to NY). It came in one piece and has been working great since.

I guess we all have our own tastes, but I love that ass, personally 😆 Having brought about a dozen CRTs into my house in the past couple years, I can tell you that when a CRT has an ass like that, it's going to be a lot lighter than other styles of tube for the same size. I can baaarely lift a 27 inch trinitron, but a stubby tube like this is always lighter. I had a couple of RCA Thomson tubes and they are surprisingly light and small and easy to carry for a 27 inch TV. Underrated picture quality too. People are obsessed with trinitrons now but so many other CRTs were fantastic. Plus these tubes aren't as deep and fit nicely into a corner, and you never see the back anyway, lol

The picture looks awesome and IMO, that is as perfect of a consumer CRT as you can get. This series of CRTs is known as Superflat (in U.S.) and GAOO (in Canada). You can always tell it is a Superflat/GAOO because of the darkened horizontal strip at the bottom of the chassis, just below the Panasonic logo. I used to own a Pansonic Superflat set made in '98 and it was s-video only but the picture was amazing. One thing I did notice on my Superflat CRT was that with 3D games and video content, the image had sort of a soap opera effect, similar to what you would see when you turn on the 120hz setting on some LCD tvs. Riggel, do you notice the image has a soap opera/overly processed/overly smooth look when playing 3D games and watching video content on this set?

It's hard to compare the 2. My xbr200 is larger with an aperture grill and a flat-screen. The panasonic is none of those. Personally, I fancy large flat-screen sonys so I'm biased but this panasonic has better black levels and white ballance compared to the sony. I THINK they were selling these for $200 at Walmart in Canada in the early 00's. It might be the one I owned back around that time. "your back be damned" hahaha I've carried a few trinitrons home (only to find out they were non functioning ~_~) in the last couple of years. For all y'all young persons out there, reddit crt noobs etc, these will mess up your back believe us. And this isn't just some jolly ol back pain, it's deep nerve pain. Sucks, takes about 2-3 months for the worst of it to repair itself. I've stopped collecting for the time being cause my back just cannot take it any longer. Passed up on the BIGGEST trini a few weeks back. There was no way I could carry it down the street without some wheels and help. I have no idea how the hell we dealt with this crap back in the day, I don't remember it being so bad haha. I think every boomer is rooting for OLED to get to CRT levels of awesomeness. They are close but not there yet. Retroarch shaders are getting better too. Nothing beats CRT but we aren't gonna be able to keep this up when we are old (older) men. You are totally right about the whole BADGE thing. In the long run, it's BETTER for us guys who aren't e-clout morons. More CRT for us. Some of those 80s CRTs are amazing for NES. I've got in my collection a 80s/early 90s JVC with NO rca in on it. I can tell you with 100% honesty NES/GENESIS are funner and look better on this TV than both of my D-SERIES, my TRINIs and anything else. It's a mono speaker but holy crap is loud. Regarding the seemingly easier time we had with these TVs back in the day, besides being younger, most of us also weren’t dealing with monster sized flat screen Trinitrons like we’re all wanting to lug around today. Or even curved Trinitrons, which are also heavier than other curved sets. I guess it depends on where you lived but around here I didn’t know anyone with a Trinitron when I was a kid, and the biggest sets I usually saw were 25-27”ish. Smaller in the kids rooms.

I have a CT-27D12 and a CT-27SL13 Tau and the D12 is far better. A lot of the Panasonic sets with component in the early 2000's have a bad jungle chip that cause a poor image with lots of distortion, these Panasonic D models do not have that issue. I don't like flat CRTs so I mainly collect curved with component and these sets are close to the best. This is right up there with a Philips. The biggest downside to this TV is the service menu options aren't great. They have good geometry though because the adjustments were all done in the factory via glued on magnets. Basically even though this set isnt Sexy, its one of my favorites because the picture is so good.

So I had to tell her I wouldnt bring anymore home, so now I just have to find creative ways to hide them 😖 I wish I could have them all out on display like this. I wanted my newly rgb modded jvc in the living room next to the 70" so i could play my retro shit in the living room instead of having to hide in the bedroom but she thinks its tacky 🤬 Looks like between us we could start a crt museum 🤣 Anyway.... There is a redit post describing how you can tell what tube is in the jvc d series. I can find it for you. Luckily you can tell by the serial number on the back of the chasi (all the tubes themselves say jvc). Most people want the Thompson or the Panasonic. I have both and I highly prefer the Panasonic. My wife has been oddly an benign presence in my crt hobby. I keep waiting for her to get annoyed and she simply doesn't care. She told me once that she's just glad im at home playing video games and not going out to strip clubs or spending boat loads of money on motor sports. I tried putting my xbr48 in the living room because I thought it was a good looking crt. My wife thought otherwise.
