I recently bought the G7, thought I've made my research thoroughly enough, only to start second guessing my decision when it arrived and I had time to play with it for a couple of days. You're one of the only people on KZbin I've found who made me put my worries and calculations behind me, because I am a total rookie and this is my first real camera. Thanks for the advice!

Hi Justin - I enjoyed your thoughts on G7 vs G85! I have a G7 with a couple good lenses but need something that records longer than 30 minutes. I can get a GH4 or a G85 at about the same price. GH4 has a headphone jack which I really like, but the G85 reviews say its images are slightly better, especially in low light. I use the camera primarily for video but do shoot stills as well. Which one would you recommend?

Hii justin, i just upgraded my lenses from the kit lens to 12-35. I feel a bit weird with the experience i got with 12-35 is more shaky and jitter compared with the 14-42(kits) when i do a vlog. I hold in the same way with my joby. Yeah 14-42 is also shaky but there no jitter in the kitlens. Is there any thing wrong with my setting (already turn on the power OIS should i turn or off anything else) oh ya iam try to shoot with cinelikeD and 4k.

Nice one! But I'm still struggling between Canon 80d(great AF) and Panasonic G85(4k) focusing on filmmaking and timelapses! Which one to buy?
@JustinReves7 жыл бұрын
That's really what it comes down to. If you don't need 4K or wanting to use it with some livestreaming like KZbin or Facebook Live, the 80D is killer. But a lot of filmmakers don't use autofocus which is why the GH4 is so popular. The internal stabilization in the G85 is pretty cool, too - not quite a gimbal but it makes for much smoother run & gun. If you know you're going to be doing a ton of autofocus, snag the 80D - there's absolutely no reason you can't tell a good story with it - especially if you're not a serious professional.
@kirill123267 жыл бұрын
Thx! I'm purchasing g85 finally!
@iRecordOS6 жыл бұрын
I'm stuck as well. My Canon t5 shoots amazing quality; however there is no video autofocus. Will I be disappointed by the g85 continuous auto focus vs 80d. An 80d on a gimbal would provide amazing 1080 video. Arguably cleaner than the g85 4k.
@ImChrisLuke7 жыл бұрын
The G7 is an amazing camera with high value. I also got a GX85, and I will say that for video, I do love the Sensor Stabilization so much, that I don't want to shoot any video on the G7 anymore. Handheld of course. There's just no contest for me - I'm talking that tiny constant shake from just holding the camera, and I do have steady hands! So I am looking at the G85, but I CANNOT understand the mic jack placement! For selfie screen the jack will block so much!!! So maybe I'll just screw it all and get the GH5 instead!! :D
@JustinReves7 жыл бұрын
+I'm Chris Luke yeah, mic jack placement is annoying. Real annoying. Don't understand why they couldn't have just put it where it is on the GH4.

Justin... I want to ask you a very important question for me. Between G7 and G85, could you make sure that g85 is better in image quality? IBIS stabilization aside and some other feature ... G7 is better than G85 in some aspect? I would like to buy one of these cameras, just one of them. What interests me most is the final quality of the shots. Does the Lumix G85 camera have the same or better image quality than the G7?
@JustinReves5 жыл бұрын
I never noticed a difference in image quality between the two. I still have a G7 for a live cam but use it the odd time for recording and it’s still excellent.
@jonafigueroa93315 жыл бұрын
And... Thanks! Awesome video!
@dpollock3337 жыл бұрын
For me, the major advantage of the g85 is that it does not chop up your video files into pieces when you shoot longer videos, and it does not turn itself off after thirty minutes. For long interviews, sermons, and other times when you just want to let the camera run and forget time issues, this is a really big deal. Plus I am told that the G7 not only chops up the video into segments, but that when you put those files back together you often lose a frame or two between each segment.

Your very first comment about being a beginner with a lot to learn just made my decision for me. Sometimes I get too wrapped up in available features and forget that I don't even know the basics yet. Hi Justin, I came across your channel a few weeks back and I must say I was surprise with the quality of the videos you have been uploading, I meant that in very good way. I believe your subscribers list is going to grow very rapidly. I have just started uploading content to my channel constantly and was deciding to replace my old FUJI XE1 which is not a very good camera for videography. I decided to go with the G7 rather than G85 as most of my shoots are just done in my home entertainment/studio room. I do have the urge to get the GH5 though, and hope that it would elevate the quality so much more, but I'm really worried about the auto focus issue that many people are talking about. I'm a one man crew so that will put me in a very difficult situation. Anyway, keep up the good work and I will be on a look out for your new videos.

Nekojitablog Depends. If I was making videos for KZbin, I wouldn't buy a GH4. Can't use all the extra data in those high bitrates. The GH4/G7/G85 all shoot the same data rates for 4K. So I'd pick the G85 because the IBIS is sweet. But if you were making films for the big screen, the GH4.

lol Ernesto no sabia que siguieras a justin , me he quedao flipanding.

So, ive never actually used a camera before outside of my cell phone, and I write freelance for a few websites regularly. Was asked to do a review on a game for one of the sites a write for, was given a review key and then they blindsided me and asked me to do a video review. Spent around 40 hours trying to figure it out, crash course in adobe, obs broadcasting, cutting video and the entire experience was "interesting" to say the least. I liked the editing, and the production and went out and took some film just to kind of get an idea of what I could do. It was garbage, with shit footage and terrible sound quality, so im looking to actually invest in a descent kit so I take take quality footage of some of the hikes out here in Montana. Can you recommend a good starting camera and setup? Camera, lens, sound thingy works with it, steady cam maybe? I would prefer not to spend more then 1k on the entire set up, just a college student with a part time job. Edit: I will never ever do another game review again though.

Hey Mate great video subbed, I am very much a noob atm. I am about to buy the g85 this week. Do you think I should get the 12-60mm f/3.5-5.6 or 14-140mm f3.5-5.6 kit lenses, I'll be travelling for 6months this year so want a decent set up to learn on. What other lenses to would you recommend? I was thinking the 100-300 f4.0-5.6 ii and maybe the 7-14mm f4.0? would love to hear your thoughts
@JustinReves7 жыл бұрын
I get asked this a lot and unfortunately I haven't used the 14-140mm yet. People say it's great. I'm skeptical because of how long that zoom range is in such a small package, but it's probably just fine. I like the extra width of the 12mm on the 12-60 and really like the way my images have turned out on it. The 7-14mm is my favourite lens because of how crazy it makes stuff look and how wide it gets. I also love the primes. The 15mm 1.7 is currently my favourite prime but the 25mm 1.7 or 1.4 are great as well as the 42.5mm 1.7. If you need an all-arounder, the best is the 12-35mm f/2.8 then grab the best longer zoom you can afford ontop of that. 100-300mm is a tough range because you have to be so steady. If you could only have 2 lenses, then the 12-35 and the 35-100 2.8 twins would be the way to go but not cheap. Otherwise mix primes in - they're sharp and great in low light.

So what if you do video tutorials and vlogs but not where I am walking around kind of vlogs. More of sitting and talking like you are in this video or having it film my iPad Screen, which is what I do most of my tutorials on. Also just taking some family photos and videos of my kids and stuff. Seems like the G7 would be great for that on a budget since right now most everything I film is with my iPhone 5s. Also, I do have a Nikon d40 and a couple of lenses. For $697 I can get the d5600 body only or $500ish I can get a d5500 body only. How do you think those would compare? I know I wouldn't be getting 4k but in terms of video quality and best bang for your buck.

LOL I'm now in that scenario to get the G7 or G85 :-D Main idea is to make automotive videos and some holiday shots. The only reason I would really go for the G85 is because of the in body stabilization, the rest of the features are not so important to me and I'm also planning to get a different lens.

Stabilization is nice, but good lenses are even nicer.

The big struggle with Panasonic cameras is their autofocus isn’t the best. If it were me, I’d be looking at the Canon M50 - fantastic for video and photos. Wasn’t a thing when I made this video way back! Love it: geni.us/jrevesCanonM50

I can get a G7 with Feiyutech a1000 gimbal for about £50 less than the G85 in the UK. Was thinking this is easily a better deal as the gimbal can be used on other future cameras I have. Thoughts, anyone?
@JustinReves6 жыл бұрын
Just make sure that gimbal can handle the weight of a couple more good lenses because you’ll want to upgrade the kit lens. But a gimbal + G7 will be more stable than a g85 - you just gotta be ok hauling and fiddling with a gimbal.

@@JustinReves 1.7kg payload on the A1000 and the G7 with battery and kit lens is less than 600g. Mainly be used as a b-cam so won't be investing into too many primes. Think it's the better option. Thanks for the heads-up! Informative.

@@JustinReves no I like it but as a vloger it's heavy and I use it as a still photography at my professional field so I need another camera which I shoot vloging as well as wedding video
@JustinReves4 жыл бұрын
@@SUVHO1000 Vlogging and wedding video are two different animals I would say, but if it were me doing both, I'd look at either Sony a6100/a6400/a6600 or the Olympus E-M1 Mark III. These cameras give you solid 4K and 120fps for the wedding side while also having great autofocus for vlogging, in addition to mic input jacks and selfie screens. You may want to pick one that also has a headphone jack for weddings to make sure your audio is coming through properly like in the a6600 and Olympus. The Panasonics don't have great autofocus which will let you down for vlogging. Canon M6 Mark II or 90D could also be a viable option.

It certainly takes up more but with how cheap memory cards are, it’s not much of an issue. Having a solid computer to edit 4K is the bigger thing to worry about.

Yo Bro. Now in Amazon G85 is $700 with a kit lens, G7 is $500 with kit lens+45-150 mm. For the budget of 800 $, should I buy g7 +25MM lens or g85? Do I need to wait for Black Friday? please advice to me. For a beginner like me, it works in 2019 right?

For photography neither the g7 nor the g85 would be the best picks. They weren't really made for photographers. I mean, they're still great for photography, but if you're only concerned about taking pictures and couldn't give a shit about video then the gx8 and gx85 are the better choice. Both of those are cameras specifically made for photography. If photography is your main concern I'd actually recommend Olympus since they're better at photography but if you're after only a Panny then pick either the gx8 or gx85. However if you have an equal passion for photography and videography then I'd recommend the g7 or g85. Hell, even the gx85 is a good video camera but the lack of a mic jack is a serious drawback.
@JustinReves7 жыл бұрын
+The Dead Immortal I'm curious why you think the GX series is better for photography? I don't think you can get a battery grip for the GX8 or GX85. A HUGE bonus for the G85 if you're into photography. FStoppers photo of the day last week was on a friends G85. It's a beast for photography. Obviously if all you cared about was photography you'd be looking full frame, but if you're an enthusiast, I think the G85 is excellent.

What kind of SD card would you suggest for the Panasonic G7?
@JustinReves7 жыл бұрын
SanDisk Extreme Pro if you're wanting to shoot 4K. The Lexar Professional 32GB ones would do it for me, but the 64GB ones would hit write limitations. Sony should be good, too, but the SanDisk are rock solid.

This is what I use - not inexpensive, but there is NOTHING worse than having an important shot ruined by a write error or having an entire card lost due to cheap cards. I've had both. sad. amzn.to/2mMfYyj

Hey Justin, i have GH4 and G7 and i'm using them with a Canon EF-mount lenses on adapter ( Tokina 11-16 , Sigma 18-35, Tamron 24-70 , Canon 70-200 ) but here is a thing , a don't have IS on those lenses and cameras, but i really want to have it.... I am interested to buy a GH5 and G85 instead GH4 and G7 because of build in 5 axis IS ... And here is the question, because is a Dual IS , will it work with my set up of lenses and cheap adapter ? Or must be a pana lenses with IS to work this 5 axis IS ?? ... I am very happy with lenses i own , just need a cameras with IS on sensor, which will work with these lenses great, even on cheap adapter without any electric support... Sorry for my english and thanks for your reply :)
@JustinReves7 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that the in-body 5-axis will work fine with any lens - but it just won't work in tandem with the other IS in non-Panasonic lenses (and even the odd Panasonic lens). So you'll get 5-axis but not 5-axis plus the IS in the lenses.
@videoprodukcia-cineshine7 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot... i was just thinking and worried at same time , if the in-body 5-axis will work without another IS support from the lens. I understand that Dual IS from body and lens will be super smooth but ... Do you think will be worth it to buy GH5 or G85 if i want to use only body stabilization ? ... i would like to know which camera set up will work better on stabilization .... GH5 ( 5-axis ) + cheap adapter + tamron 24-70 IS-OFF .. or ... GH4 + metabones + tamron 24-70 IS-ON ... so here is a battle ! :D ... body stabilization vs. lens stabilization ... what is your opinion ?
