Panasonic G9 mark II review. Does this camera destroy the GH6 in every way? Best photo video hybrid camera under $2000? Is it bettter than the Fuji XS20 and Canon R8, Sony ZVE1? Some amazing new features like phase detect autofocus, completely reworked electronic stabilization algorithm. 4k 120 fps and HD 300 fps. Pros and Cons of the G9 II. Micro four thirds vs full frame and aps-c. Low light vs Sony A7S III was surprising.

Let's be real. Panasonic built this camera for Kasey and Kasey alone. Some product design guy has been watching CC and desperately trying to create Kasey's "perfect camera" that now it's just like Captain Ahab chasing his white whale. He just wants to make a camera that will make Kasey say the search is over - this is good enough.

One thing that sets Kasey apart from probably all other camera reviewers and channels is that he maintains his integrity and honesty 100% of the time ... or, rather, unlike the other channels, he actually has both of those. So many camera channels pretending to be these honest, helpful video channels when all they're actually doing is plugging their $800 cinematography class, advertising a brand that sent them free stuff (but they're totally "objective," right? lol), or asking you to like/comment/subscribe six times a minute. As someone who is just getting back into the camera world, it blows my mind how this hobby/area of tech has such shady content available for it.

I'm kind of blown away with the Stabilisation. I work in film, and despite how much OIS and IBIS and Gimbals are crowed about, and how good they have all got, none of them have ever really dealt well with 4th Axis so any kind of walking shot always looks bouncy. That's why on film sets our primary stabilisation tool, by a wide margin, is still the Steadicam. Those shots of you running with the 12-35 with the Dual IS and the ES together were Steadicam level stable. I kind of can't believe it.

I always see the wobbliness of Sony's sub-par EIS contraption in the A7Siii/a6700, seems Sony's mount might be physically incompatible with decent optical sensor stabilisation performance (or somehow Sony can't design it correctly), while Panasonic may have the optimal m43 mount for a most excellent IBIS performance. I want to see more G9ii IBIS comparisons between the Dual IS 2 lenses and with those that don't have that.. for example comparing 12-35mk3/mk2/mk1 and 12-60 Leica with the 10-25mm Leica, 8-18mm Leica and some other lenses that don't have Dual IS 2 such as Olympus 12-40mm Pro and some other.. and to see what really is the difference with and without Dual IS 2, if it improves stabe a lot with G9ii or if it's mostly just been marketing.
@chcomes
@chcomes Жыл бұрын
@@charbax agree. The main point for EIS is how well it works or not with good shutter angles, and with slow sensor readouts. In slow sensors, like A74, EIS will not save you because of vertical wobble compression as the camera shakes during read-out. that is possibly the worst looking shake in video. Catalyst does not work well with motion blur, you get video that looks like upscaled 720p. Most of the YT stabilization testers do those tests without ND filters, probably coached by the sales reps, to avoid shitty results. But in Casey we trust!

Holy sh*t the video stabe is very impressive with EIS!!! Finally a lightweight camera with interchangeable lenses, reliable AF, rugged body, perfect stabe and 10bit/high quality footage... and a somewhat big sensor (at least its much bigger than any action cam/phone). Also, I'm glad Panasonic want to work with you

I believe that's called the Sony ZV-E1, minus the rugged part, but it's a hall of a lot smaller and lighter :)
@JetBen555
@JetBen555 Жыл бұрын
@@DigiDriftZone Even with dynamic stabe (30%~ crop), the stabilization on the ZV-E1 is no where near as solid as the G9ii in video. This is really a game changer, no need for gimbal, minimal crop, no corner wobble. Also, 12mp, no EVF, overheating issue.. it's not a great hybrid camera and unless you never go out, its not a good video camera either.
@DigiDriftZone
@DigiDriftZone Жыл бұрын
@@JetBen555There's no corner wobble on Sony either and I too feel like no gimbal needed on ZV-E1, plus it records motion data so if you're willing to run it in through catalyst, you get even better results than in camera. Would be interesting to see a side by side.
@JetBen555
@JetBen555 Жыл бұрын
@@DigiDriftZone There's no corner wobble but it shakes like hell - I was thinking about buying an A6700 or ZV-E1 and the more video I watched (specifically about the stabilization) the more I was disappointed. I am not willing to use catalyst browse, it take too long to stabilize the footage.. when you can turn on a switch in the G9ii and get better result with minimal crop. Kasey was running with a camera in the hand and the stabilization was perfect, with very little crop. It was basically in GoPro territory.
@DigiDriftZone
@DigiDriftZone Жыл бұрын
@@JetBen555that’s the problem, it is in action cam territory in dynamic range too. Sure it is slightly better than dynamic stabe but not as good as catalyst at the expense of having 12k ISO max vs 500k ISO and significantly more dynamic range - just see how blown out the sky is in the vlog tests. For me there just isn’t enough improvement over an iPhone / Action cams with the Panasonic and in some ways it is even worse.

Panasonic is absolutely killing the camera game the past year. I bought an s5II because I said I would always try one if they did phase detect AF, I sold everything and bought a second one and moved platforms. It is the best camera I ever owned hands down, I came from an a73 platform, but I did use a z6 II for a while, and the Lumix platform is amazing and having all the native sigma glass allows you to build out your lenses without buying all first party for lesser used lenses without any drawbacks. My daughter is on the m4/3 platform, this looks like a homerun.

To be honest, I think that the image did look in low light more realistic with the G9II...until it has gone complete black of course. It seems to me that the A7SIII did some kind of image processing what caused a much brighter but washed out image compared to the G9II.
@jockslifeatliftvideoproduc8528
@jockslifeatliftvideoproduc8528 11 ай бұрын
@@FlappySock There actually is a decrease in image quality. You can see it on the S5ii vs S5. The S5 produces a cleaner, smoother image with better low light performance. Panasonic is correct, a phase layer on the top of the sensor does degrade the image and a grid pattern can sometimes be seen in lens flares, which I have personally see on my friends A7iii some years back. The reality is, Panasonic has had to move to phase due to popular demand, it's not that they don't care, it's that people want phase. People, understandably, value autofocus accuracy over the minimal image quality drop of a phase detect layer and Lumix has finally had to listen to the demand.

Damn this camera looks good! For the first time ever, I'll say really I like that Panny skin tone, getting rid so all the sand yellow! you finally outdid the 🍣 makers and step on the Canon podium! the green and the blue were a tad too vivid, but this could be just a setting and can be tweaked. the 👽 should be ashamed! well done Panny Boy, you did well! now give us something we can actually carry around without a Sherpa, please! 😤 ...pretty please? 🥺

I bet that G9 II would be a nice wildlife camera with the much smaller lenses. (Thought about buying the original one used before going Fuji) I get a good workout with the Fuji 150-600 😂

I expected good but this... The stabe holy macaroni, the slow mo, v-log, PDAF, all the codecs you get and the ISO performance looks pretty sweet too for a micro loser. Now to rob a bank, brb.

The original prototype for the typing keyboard was a repurposed electric music keyboard, not a typewriter. We then modelled it back on the typewriter after but with better letter priority placement. Idk why we call it a mouse. 🤓

been waiting on the m43 pdaf announcement for a while now. thanks for your review. I like that you clearly label each shot with what camera and lens you are using throughout your review. For me, I do not shoot higher than 30fps anyway, so a lot of the time in this video wasn't so useful to me. I want to see how is it in low light, autofocus, stabilization, color, features etc in not high fps. in particular i have the g85, and i think you also enjoy the g85. i want to see how this new one compares. thanks and keep it up.

I would go to your other channel to look at more video examples but the last time I did that the first video that popped up was about some sort of terrifying Venom symbiote like black slime that passed through you and you were playing with it in a bath tub... I'll stick to the nice birdies and dad running on this channel.

I'm so tempted, but at the same time, the S5II is pretty much the same price. The FX30 is a little cheaper and that's for an APS-C sensor. Same price for full frame and APS-C cameras... Both better in low light. I have a bunch of m43 lenses but nothing spectacular. It's tempting for that alone.
@spaceghostcqc2137
@spaceghostcqc2137 Жыл бұрын
This seems better than an S5ii for a hybrid personal camera. Focus speed, af improvements to eye and animal detect, 4k120, continuous and burst shooting, ibis, etc. plus the weight savings on telephotos if you do any kind of wildlife stuff.
@yawningmarmot
@yawningmarmot Жыл бұрын
@@spaceghostcqc2137It's micro four thirds sensor though. It's pretty good, sure, but there's a noticeable drop in dynamic range (and consequently low light performance) compared to full frame. The lenses are cheaper and lighter though, so that's a big plus, amongh other things you mentioned.

FX30 has insane crops in 4k 120fps and HD 240fps, making it smaller sensor than G9 II.

@@yawningmarmot with the dynamic range boost we should get the same dynamic range of a apsc camera. I expect this to be within a half a stop of the newest apsc cameras when it comes to dynamic range and low light.
