Panasonic GH3 vs Panasonic GX85 - Which is the better budget option?

GH3 is all the camera anyone who knows what they are doing would ever need .... It is NOT beginner friendly. But is extremely powerful for it's time.

I bought a GH3 in 2013 and it still holds up for me. 4K video would be nice but with most content being viewed on mobile, it’s not really necessary. A cinema/photographer’s skill matters more than the hardware. Also glass; a good lens on an older camera will generally produce better results than a cheap lens on a new camera (in my opinion).

The G85 has mic input and tilt screen and it cost the same or just slightly more than the GX85

I think they're best suited for different people. The real advantage of the GX85 is the IBIS and the 4K, but I would consider the GH3 a more serious video tool even though it doesn't shoot 4K. Mic and headphone jacks are critically important for an A camera. I do think the GX85 is a fine B camera if you already have an A camera.

I have both. Gx85 is very good for the price, but the quality and detail of the gh3 with its 50 / 72mbps at 1080 is truly amazing, even compared to the 4k of the gx85 (plus the files are much lighter) ... it also has a ' "less digital" and more cinematic image. it's too bad the lack of stabilization, which really makes a difference, more than 4k. Agree with you, for photos the gx85 is definitely better

The GH3 is some ways is a weird camera because of the hacked GH2. I remember when the GH3 came out and on the forums a lot of users just decided to skip the GH3 and stick with the GH2 hacked cameras.

In this video DFD is pure marketing- that's it. In practice, it seems the same between the two.

I had both cameras, and in my experience GH3 > GX85 I didn't find the 4K video on the GX85 good enough to forget that it has no mic input and no articulating screen. I'm still using my GH3 for paid work. Have a nice day.

I’m wondering this! And that’s really great to hear since paid work means, Satisfactory results. Would you happen to know if the file sizes are ALOT smaller than the GX85 at 4K? That’s what’s slowing down my workflow currently. File sizes equals to waiting for transfers encoding editing etc. I bet with smaller sizes it would go smoother and faster! It’s not like my computer can’t handle the file sizes as well as 4K 30 100mbps video and encodes etc. It just takes a little longer than I wish it would take! Surely 1080 60fps 72mbps video would cut down time. And we all know. Time issss money. You wouldn’t happen to have both cameras still to test them would you?

@@starwarsfanforever7949 The GH3 does not do 4K... it maxes out at 1080p/60. However, it has a codec for 1080p that provides files at 72Mbps. This is an all-Intra codec that is easy to edit. Generally speaking, smaller file sizes means more compression. And the more you compress a file, the more power your computer needs to provide a smooth editing experience.
