Jordan should do like a 10 episode 'basic video skills'-series on video. Like: color correction, grading, stabilizing, light, audio, etc.

Glad you guys came back with a follow up video- the GH4 is worth it. I'm sold on it, and I shoot video and stills....if only I could find a stockist in the U.K who still had a unit for sale Id buy one today. Thanks Chris & Jordan for all your efforts making these videos.

I took Jordan's advice from the first video and got a GH4 to take "A-camera" duties over from my hacked GH2, and stills duties over from my Sony A57. VERY happy I did, this thing is simply amazing!

TheCameraStoreTV Just curious if you still feel this way Jordan, now that you have the a7s in your hands? Also, what lenses are you really liking on the a7s? (not Sony ones, I'm guessing...)
@TheCameraStoreTV
@TheCameraStoreTV 10 жыл бұрын
Hammerhaus Kennel I've been liking the A7S for our style of shooting, where I can't light stuff. The dynamic range in S-Log2 is a big boon there. But the GH4 image is much sharper. I still think I'll go with the GH4, because the AF is so much better when I'm shooting stills and I rarely shoot over 3200 ISO, but if it was strictly for video, the A7S is very tempting. I've been using the Zeiss FE 24-70 F4 on the A7S until I get a new Metabones Canon mount adaptor. It's a good lens optically, but I hate focus by wire lenses and it breathes constantly, which is why you won't see many focus pulls in our A7S shot videos.

TheCameraStoreTV Awesome info, thanks Jordan! BTW, the focus by wire of the Lumix 12-35 bugs the crap out of me too. One big reason I'm thinking about popping for a Sigma 18-35 1.8 on a speed booster. I guess I would keep the 12-35 for running on the GH4 when I need image stabilization. It really is a great lens on that camera other than the focus by wire frustrations... Anyway, thanks again! :)

08:36 Your 4K supersampled to 1080p may be sharper, but it looks like it has crazy moire. I've seen that with stills sometimes when they get downsized other than by powers of 2.

Awesome info - thanks. For video, it *seems* like one of the biggest objections with this camera compared to a full-frame DLSR is the 2 X crop factor (a bit more for 4K). Adding a Metabones Speed Booster will take care of most of the crop factor, add an f/stop and open up the GH4 to a world of lens options. But - what are the trade-offs? How does a Panasonic 7-11mm compare with a more widely available Nikon/Canon/etc wide angle with a MSB? Since you asked, I would love to see someone dig into that topic.

I'm curious if you can take one of the 4K frames and use it as a print. How does that 4K screen grab look? Especially for something like sports.

At 9:35 you ask if you missed something, yes. This is a bit of a "Leica Polishing" Video. Your coverage of low light seemed limited to 4:48 to 5:10, with a few other 'low light' comments throughout. Where was the test of dynamic range in low light and why the awful banding @ 5:08 (would 4:2:2 fix that, we do not know since all the 422 was at 7:34 to 8:18, and in bright light). What about AF in low light ... A 12 minute Video with 1 minute of what I specifically wanted to see, a few seconds was spent tossing a Camera back and forth (6:37 to 6:43) but no slow-mo. Panasonic Camcorders (high end, consumer 3-MOS) are well regarded, how does this 'stills Camera' compare (for colour in low light) ? I'm still not convinced to get the GH4 (or the a7s), waiting another 5 months ... Thanks for all your great Videos, I'll watch part 3. YT, Rob (of LowLightVideos, thanks for Subbing me).

Great video! Does the GH4 truly record for longer than 29:59 continuous? With my 5Diii into a Ninja 2 I can achieve this, but with one HUGE caveat: you have to do "something" to the display before the 29:59 mark or the camera will still shut down. The "something" could be pressing the "info" button, and cycling through the histogram, etc. No biggie if you have a designated operator, but for "set up and let it go" one-man-band shooting, it fails miserably. If I were to use the GH4 as a live streaming camera, and want the sensor to continuously pump info to the HDMI out for an hour or more, without touching the camera, is this possible?

I'm conflicted. I currently own a D750, which I love for stills and it also has great video capabilities in my opinion. However, I'm getting into filmmaking and I no longer need a camera for stills. Is it worth selling my d750 and purchasing a GH4? Or is the video capabilities not that much different and I should continue using my d750? The low light performance concerns me with the gh4. how much different is it from the d750?

Looking at this as an entry-level SLR (even though it is mirrorless) and, you're right, everyone is talking about the video capabilities. I appreciate you spending time talking about the stills. This is about 1000 dollars less than the Nikon750D (and I think the lenses are cheaper, as well) which is making it very attractive to me. Will the difference in image quality be that significant if I opt for the cheaper GH4 over the Nikon?

Thanks for the test and especially for the video-AF test. You tested it in the 24p mode. I find some sources which tell that the video-AF is much better in 60p than in 24p/30p (Example: Panasonic DMC-GH4 AUTO FOCUS TEST UltraHD(4K) vs FullHD). I don't understand why, but did you tested that or will you test that in your upcoming AF-Test comparison?

I was really surprised to see your low light test went all the way up to 6400, without much visible grain. I have the camera and I've found it gets grainy around 800, and I had thought anything above 1600 was going to be unusable. Are you able to get that result by having a fast lens and shooting in 4k?

I loved my GH2 because as a photographer and videographer I was able to jump between the two with almost all the same equipment. I had the opportunity to use the GH4 (test footage on my channel) and I am very impressed. I took some stills also, and it's a huge improvement over the GH2. I will probably be purchasing this camera in the future to do both stills and video with it.

I've been amazed ever since I first learned about this camera how underappreciated it is for still photography, especially when it comes to action. I actually purchased one and have not yet used the movie function. I am an amateur photographer and have recently started shooting amateur car racing events since my husband starting to do that. I had a Canon and was feeling limited before even just shooting RC card because there was such a lag with my t1i shutter and there is not many frames per second on it. I started looking into upgrading my Canon gear and was amazed at not only how expensive some of the better super zoom lenses are, but also how heavy they are. This camera is seriously underappreciated for all the other things it does amazingly well regardless of price and then it's so cheap compared to anything that comes close. I really appreciate that you pointed that out and wish there were videos about that that would get enough views to be worth producing.

If you external record 1080p straight to a DVR, then pull that footage back onto the computer, would that be a cheap way to get 4:2:2 10 bit to play around with in post? Or do you need an "external recorder" for that purpose. Also when downsizing 4k to 1080p would that create 4:2:2 10 bit?

Good and fun review as always! One thing that wasn't mentioned and I wonder if you know (many people don't and it would've been great if you illustrated them here): you don't need the YAGH to shoot 10bit 4:2:2 4K, it comes right out of the HDMI port! The new Atomos Shogun coming out later this year will be able to take the signal. So unless you need to work with SDI and/or need balanced audio inputs and physical level controls (or unless you really need that 4K signal right now), then the $ 2.000 YAGH isn't obligatory to get the best image out of the camera!

Great video as always - thanks guys - No one complains that FF and APS size DSLRs do not have IBIS and basically all their fast primes do not have IS - So I am glad you guys acknowledge how good the GH4 is - of course there is no perfect camera out there - but for the price and what you get with the GH4 it is a really good deal - Panasonic have so many good lenses - like the 42.5mm F1.2 and the 12-35mm F2.8 etc with IS - As a stills camera it has a great grip and so many function keys - and of course so many lenses - I do agree that for those not into video the OMD em1 is the top choice but the GX7 is also great, with IBIS and nice form factor and so many features - silent shooting - touch LCD and Touch to shoot and can use all the Olympus lenses etc etc Of course the Fuji X-t1 is great for stills and the a6000 nice for the price but neither one have IBIS and no Touch etc etc - Yes it would be nice to see IBIS in the GH4 :) one day - I do own Fuji and Sony and Nikon and Olympus and used to own lots of Canon gear - for some reason I get the feeling that Panasonic has the least respect of the bunch but in my experience like with the GX7 and GH3 I think they offer many things I do not see in the others - to me the GX7 has one of the highest fun to use factors -

Hey there - thank you for all the excellent info! I am looking to purchase a new camera for anthropological and ecological field work - so ideally it will be rugged, weather sealed, and fairly lightweight. Thank you for discussing stills capability!! You are just about the only reviewers to touch on this - bless you. As of now my focus is stills, but I am wanting to get into documentary film - is the GH4 too much power for someone just beginning with videography? Do you think I would be better off with something like the Fuji XT1 or Olympus EM1 for stills and just use whatever video capability is there? Or get a separate camcorder for interviews and landscape shots? Would you recommend it for someone focusing on stills, with some video? How do the stills compare to the XT1 or EM1? Curious to know your thoughts! Thank you for your time and input.

In these days of speed boosters, can you check the high ISO performance of the GH4 vs. the X-T1? I'm going to buy the X-T1, but; BUT, if the high ISO performance isn't drastically different... who knows? Cause I do night sky photography (including aurora), so that is important, but I don't want to go full frame as I want to use some of my Pentax glass, with a speed booster and without. And the GH4 is so impressive as a video camera as well (where the X-T1 is absolutely horrible, they might fix it, but they haven't so far, AFAIK).

Or is the movie-AF more a problem in 4k vs. FHD, because of much more data to be handled? Because the new DFD technique needs only software power to interpret the picture data. Maybe it's to much work in 4k and 24/30fps?

Love your reviews guys, glad you gave the GH4 another follow up aswell! Loving my GH4 and I had similar results in my 1Dx comparison. It really is a game changer for video and stills, I hope Panasonic really succeed with it. Only thing I didn't really find was Chris's issues with the EVF, I found it brilliant to be honest, could only get some image distortion if I pushed my eye right to the edge of the frame. Could be unique from person to person though.

I currently shoot video with my NIkon D750 (my photo camera) along with my collection of lenses (Nikkor 24-85 f3.5-4.5 vr, tamron 70-200 f2.8 vc, sigma 50mm 1.4, rokinon 12mm fisheye). The results I have gotten from shooting with this setup are honestly not too bad... but, as I get more into color grading and cinematography, I find myself wanting a camera that is 1: easier to use as run-and-gun shooting for video at events like football (or any other sporting game), concerts, etc, (but I also do plenty of pre-planned shots and movements that are not run-and-gun style, and 2: Gives better image quality AND will allow me more ability in post production and color grading. I know the blackmagic does RAW, ProRes, and better dynamic range and image quality (which makes me want to say "that is the one!!!"), but I wonder how practical that camera will be for my workflow. I plan on using an adapter to mount my nikon-mount lenses to whichever video camera I choose, and I really do need an all-in-one camera. Something that is versatile enough to use as run-and-gun shooting at football games, concerts, etc, but also something that has great image quality, will allow for lots of color grading/correcting/manipulation room, and I heard the BMPCC needs accessories and extra batteries. I am on a tight budget so if I would need several hundreds of dollars' worth of accessories to use the BMPCC, should I look at something else instead? Right now, the BMPCC and Gh4 are the only cameras I am considering, are there any others that sound like they fit my needs that I should be looking at? I am also considering picking up an Atomos Ninja external recorder to use with my D750 (if the GH4 upgrade is too much for my budget). While this is a cheaper option than purchasing a new camera body, I would like your opinion on how much of an improvement it would make compared to getting the 'better choice' of the two cameras listed above. I also wonder about the versatility when running-and-gunning. I shoot alot of low-light video, I am weary about the GH4's low-light performance with high ISOs based on what I have heard from others. If I want to get a nikon-MFT lens adapter (or a metabones speedbooster), will I be able to use autofocus, or vibration reduction/control with my lenses? The lenses have built in VR and VC, I am just wondering if those functions will work when adapted to the GH4.

excellent review! The GH4 really does hold up well in low light considering it's non-full frame sensor. I wouldn't hesitate to use it right up to 6400 for video.

Hello the camera store guys, thx a lot for the camera review. I hope someone can help me with my following question. Is the depth of field on GH4 going to be affected by the size of the camera's sensor (Four Thirds sensor)?? plus how is the sensor of the GH4 compared with the Canon APS_C 1.6 crop sensor is ranked video and still wise?? thank you

The native m43 lenses are actually really good like the Olympus 12-40mm f2.8, Olympus 75 f1.8 and the Panasonic 35-100 to name a few.

Looking forward to the shootout and see how the "fastest" AF claimed by the 3 companies hold up to each other..Please include the EM1 as well...and i do believe you guys will eventually review the a7s as well and see how that matches with the GH4

Over 2 years ago and the GH4 is still an amazing video camera. The new GH5 in 2017 may change everything.

RE: fast auto focus. My Nikon 1 camera beat the Sony A6000 in AF tests when I brought it to my local camera store to test. And I don't even have a good Nikon 1 camera, I have the S1.

Everybody talks about filming in 4K and edit in 1080. How do you do that? I have not found any function for compressing the film from 4K to 1080 in the camera menu?

It's accomplished in post production. You film or shoot in 4K in camera and with whatever other picture profile settings you are using (there are lots of choices and some great videos out there about optimizing your image with good settings). Anyways, shoot in 4K or UHD. When you import your footage to Final Cut, Premier, or whatever editing program you are using, you can use that 4k footage but on a 1080 timeline. The output will look fantastic. I would encourage you to look up some other videos on the workflow. I don't have the GH4 yet but I've been doing alot of research. The reason this approach works is that your computer and editing program is infinitely better at downscaling the video than the in camera processing is. IE, shooting in 1080 from a sensor that has a much much higher pixel count means it's scanning the image and then 'choosing' pixels or averaging them. That choosing or averaging in camera is not as good as having all the data and letting the computer pick from a super super sharp resource.

Hi there, I really love watching your reviews, its always the best. I recently bought a GH4 and even at ISO 100, while the bright areas are nicely expose with great details, I am finding a lot of noise in the shadow areas. Is there something wrong in my settings or is it normal for the camera ?

I re-watched this because I found a GH4 relatively cheaply and thought it might be a good upgrade for my GH2, but when you were talking about the stills, I picked up the GH2 and saw that my shutter activations were only 125. I've taken a whopping 125 photos with that camera since 2011, lol. I doubt anyone would buy a GHx camera for stills and it's not uncommon to find used ones with under 5k shutter activations because nobody uses that feature.

Can you output directly to an external recorder like the Atomos Ninja via HDMI in order to get 4.2.2 10 bit or do you have to use the interface unit. The Atomos Shotgun 7 should get you 4k 10 bit 4.2.2 assuming you can output that via the HDMI. Nice video BTW

You can capture 1080P 10 bit 4:2:2 with a Ninja, just not the 4K signal. Thanks for watching! Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
