Wedding films: AndySlye.com
In this video I'm going behind the scenes of my first wedding that I filmed with the GH5; How well it performs and what I like most about it and if GH5 is worth getting over the GH4 if you’re a filmmaker.
Strictly talking about video; not photography
I’ve been using the Panasonic GH4 for video since its release in 2014.
Preordered the GH5; been using since early April.
Mainly use it for KZbin videos and wedding #Videography
Price
$1997 for body (GH4 is $1497)
Similarities
MFT SENSOR
FOCUS PEAKING
TILT-SWIVEL TOUCHSCREEN
4K VIDEO
BUILT-IN WI-FI w/ APP
EXTERNAL MIC JACK
HEADPHONE JACK
SAME BATTERY (SIMILAR BATTERY LIFE)
GH5 new features/advantages over GH4
Video Quality
GH5 new 20.3MP sensor compared to the GH4 16MP sensor with no low-pass filter resulting in slightly finer details
1.7x faster readout; reduces rolling shutter
New image processor can process data 1.3x faster
4K Video with No Crop; Uses full width of the sensor so no slight cropping with certain lenses, more light capture and better noise performance
Low light has improved ever so slightly; still one of the biggest drawbacks of MFT
Lens is biggest factor for handling low light
For noise tolerance I don’t got past ISO 3200, try to keep it 1600 and under as much as possible though
GH5 can show Waveform and Vectorscopes of the scene being shot. This ability to visualize your shot using video-industry standard tools is awesome
And even though it costs a little extra, the VLog upgrade adds the ability to load LUTs so that the camera can show a preview while shooting in VLOG which is usually hard to interpret.
Rack focusing using three customized focus distances
With the new and upcoming firmware updates, the GH5 has an impressive selection of high resolution formats, frame rates and bitrates.
With the GH4 you needed an external recorder to get higher frame rates or better compression.
The GH5 can do it internally now, without the need of an external recorder. So for example it can record 4K, 4:2:2 10-bit at 150Mbps which is awesome because that’s double the color information and 64 times color depth in comparison to the internal recording of the GH4.
But for me, maybe my favorite feature is recording 4K at 60fps. Not only does it produce very stunning video but it provides so much flexibility in post which I’ll explain in a minute.
Slow Motion
180fps in full HD for filming something really fast; hasn’t really affected how I shoot
Huge benefit is 4K at 60fps
If shooting in 4K and delivering in 1080p, 4K 60fps gives you so much flexibility in post (punch in with no quality loss, and slow to 24fps timeline for smooth slow motion)
Stabilization
IBIS, one of the best new features
Dual IS 2 combines sensor and optical stabilization for a total of 5 stops of compensation
Lenses without OIS (for example Sigma 18-35 w/ speed booster) can be used handheld
Works extra well when shooting in 4K and slowing down to 24p timeline along with software stabilization effect
Autofocus
Both use contrast detection which is inferior to other manufacturers who use phase detection
GH4 has a 1st gen Depth from Defocus system with 49 AF points; GH5 has 225 AF points with new motion detection algorithm and more customizable AF settings
I’ve found that the continuous AF in video mode has not improved enough to make me use it.
hardly ever use AF, maybe used it once or twice during my 3 years with GH4.
Most people use AF on a gimbal so I tested it.
Don’t get the GH5 if you heavily rely on continuous AF in videos. However, I think this is how autofocus is supposed to be used for video, it’s how I use it. With the native Lumix lenses, the AF is lightning fast so I use it to focus before recording. Find what you want to focus on, half-press the shooting button, it focuses extremely fast, then hit Record. That’s how I do it.
If you prioritize AF, get a Canon 80D or even a Sony a6500
Design
NO BUILT-IN FLASH
Dual SD card slots
Full size HDMI port
Moved the record button from back to top which I’m not a huge fan of honestly
New joystick which is really convenient for going through menus and using it for autofocus
New custom button near the lens adds some functionality
Bluetooth
Slightly more viewfinder magnification
More dots on screen and it’s slightly bigger; more accurate and brighter
Has a lot more menu settings
Customizable My Menu, fast access to commonly used settings
AUTO ISO in video mode; customize the low/high limits
