Good job, nice comparison. I've had the leica 12-60mm since it first came out, and I have it on my G9 as my "go to" lens. I use other panaleica lenses, 25mm, 45mm macro and 100-400mm, but the 12-60 is the one I use the most. Lovely build quality and the image quality is first class. Highly recommended 👍

Just ordered the G9 with the Leica 12-60mm because the G9 with the Lumix 12-60mm was out of stock. I didn't want to spend more money on a lens that's slightly better optically. After watching this video, I was so pleased to go with the Leica lens, it's worth the extra £200 for the initial purchase of the kit but maybe not if already owning the Lumix 12-60mm then upgrading later. There is not much that I would recommend there, it depends on your preferences. It is probably good to have one prime lens with bright aperture.

I also own gx85 with the two kit lens 12-32mm and 45-150mm. I also have 25mm 1.7. I don't use the 12-32mm anymore since the 25mm can cover that range. Rather than selling the 45-150mm, sell the 12-32mm and get the 25mm 1.7 or the 20mm 1.7 if size matters.

I bought a Leica 14-50mm f3.8 Elmar 4/3 lens with a Lumix 4/3 to MFT adaptor. This is a great lens sharper than the Lumix 12-60mm lens and it's a lot cheaper than the Leica 12-60.

Are you sure the Leica is parfocal? Does it keep the focus even when it is on MF? I'm guessing G9 is just doing a good job of continuous AF with that lens...

The best way I like to put it. Its not worth going out on a whim and buying the Leica unless you absolutely need the weather sealing and parfocal feature. The Lumix is a good kit lens. However, if your going to be buying a new camera and getting the Leica on a big discount, its only an extra $100 for the upgraded model. So for a $100 more, shut up and take my money!

Very informative video. Objectively, I have 12-60 Kit against the 14-140 II and I am not dissatisfied with it. Now I've ordered the 12-60 Leica but I'm not sure whether that was the right decision. In some tests you can read that the imaging performance of the Leica is almost identical to the 12-60 kit lens or the 14-140 II. Can you give me an experience? Is the 12-60 leica that much better? I also have the 25mm 1.7 and the 100-300 lense.

Well, due to general limitations of M43 system such as the size of the optics and extremely high-pixel density, the differences between mid-range and high-end optics are not that clear in the real-world use. Leica is definitely better, but you might not see that when using most publishing platforms.

Good question. I have both and I somewhat prefer 12-60 F3.5 at least in sunny weather. Sharpness is hard to judge, but I would say it's about the same and it's not problem on either of them. Maybe 12-35 is softer at 35mm, but I would need to take photos to compare sharpness at pixel level. But the main downside of 12-35 is lens flare when taking photos with strong light source (sun, street lamps, ...). 12-35 is definitely better for video, because of smooth zoom. Rest is trading zoom range for aperture. But as travel/outdoor lens I would choose 12-60/f3.5. Huge advantage of 12-60 is that it's pretty cheap with new camera.

I still wonder what would be best between 1 zoom reasonably fast (constant F/2.8 would be fine, F/2.8-4 is the last "Ok" ) , or 2 / 3 very fast (F/1.7 or .8) & sharp primes, at focals covering the most important Fov (10 to 16 , then 24/25 , then eventually 50mm ), for low light (think I'll do a fair amount of it), as it's always better to be able to, to get faster shutter speed if needed, facilitate the lighting, consuming - battery on the LEDs, etc, for videos notably, where you can't do long exposure to save you from noise & low DR...

its only 300 (open box on ebay from camera stores, otherwise 600 more) more than the 12-60 and this is the lens i use all the time, so i am selling my 12-60 for the leica 12-60 to get the extra stop of light build quality (the kit lense does feel a bit flimsy) and of course what he doesn't mention here is that at f2.8 leica is very good vs good with the cheaper one. paying a difference of 300 to get the leica is almost free in the uber expensive world of leica panasonic fyi. also the parafocal aspect is extremely good to have believe it. The reason you can find it for 600 is because it ised to be sold as a kit lens for gh5 and camera store break up the kits for people who dont want that lens.

You're welcome, picture quality won't be affected by using non-panasonic lens, IBIS will still work, but with non-panasonic lenses IBIS and lens stabilization won't work together.

I've just ordered that better one slightly used for pretty good money (from reliable shop that is actually testing all used products). It should be a massive difference, especially on 60 mm, like f4 vs f5.6, that's like twice more light or something, this is very limiting with these small chips that don't have that great high iso, but price for new lenses with f2.8-4 is crazy. I have Panasonic G80 now, I am thinking about switching to G9 (they also have them in used condition for already pretty good price) but I don't really believe it will have better image quality than my G80, I will probably wait some time and then buy G9 II, that finally has phase focusing, that looks like a solid upgrade.

I tested the Lecia 12-60mm f2.8-4 at 16mm vs the Sig 16 f1.4 both at f4 and they are identical. I cant tell the difference! Lecia 12-60mm vs Oly 40-150mm f2.8. At 60mm at f8 and the Lecia destroys the Oly!

Hello my friend. I was wondering if you can help me. I bought the Leica 12-60, six months ago, I can swear that it is getting loose. I'm trying to find a camera store with one in stock to compare but no one has one in my region. Can you tell me if your Leica 12-60 is exhibiting a wobble at the front section, the first 2 cm or so? Mine is quite pronounced. As well, the stabilization/focus motor seems to rattle when it is not powered much more than I recall. The lens still seems to work, but if I need to take it back it would be useful to know if you have this same issue. Thanks so much.

Helloy, the rattling inside of the lens is normal with stabilized lenses, I have lenses that rattle much more. Regarding the wobble at the front section, there may be a bit of play, but it is nothing serious with my copy.

I enjoy your reviews and find them very comprehensive. However I wouldn't dear to say this Leica lens (or any photography zoom) is parfocal, since that is something very specific that video and cine zooms are designed for, and one of the reasons they're so expensive. Maybe it's focus point doesn't change much and together with the deep DOF works close to parfocal. But I think if it had that feature/characteristic would have been advertised as such. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd be surprised.

If he tested it's parfocal, then it's parfocal. Unless you have that lens and can prove that it's not the case. Cine lenses are expensive because of the guaranteed light transmission (T-stop), declicked aperture ring, and consistent size/weight for a lens series to eliminate gimbal adjustments when changing lenses, and for zooms, having fixed aperture/transmission and being parfocal. Parfocal is not exclusive to a cine zoom. It's not advertised because it's not needed in a general photography lens, except in super telephoto lenses for sports and birding.

It's a 2.8 lens only at 12mm, though. Once you move even 1mm it starts to darken. In reality, I would count these as a f/5.6 and a f/4 lens. For a f/2.8 lens, one has to buy the 12-35 variant or the Olympus 12-40. And if I was to buy a f/4, I would probably give 150 euro more and take the 12-100 Olympus. It's heavier, but has more reach and better focusing ring for MF.

It is shown in the video. You can count it as you wish, but these are 2.8-4 and 3.5-5.6 lenses. Every lens is a compromise... 12-100 is optically not great, you loose dual IS and in-camera corrections if you use it on Panasonic, so I wouldn't consider it for Panasonic. I wouldn't consider Panasonic for Olympus for the same reasons.

This video's now close to 2 years old, so don't know if anyone's paying attention. I picked up a Leica version used-nearly new, but am disappointed in build quality. I am comparing with Oly 12-40 Pro and Panasonic 14-140 build quality. I can move the end of the Leica tube up and down more than either the O12-40 or P14-140. I can also move it in and out on the Leica more than with either of the other lenses. I think my Leica has a build quality issue. Has anyone who owns one found it to be either nice and tight or relatively loose? I also find in real world testing (not a target) that both the O12-40 and my Panasonic 35-100 are sharper than the Leica 12-60 at the same focal lengths and f5.6 - and I do care about that. I'm making prints, not posting.

Would've been an easier sell if the Leica were like the Olympus 12-40mm a sensitivity f/2.8 throughout, rather than dropping off to f/4. Imho the Lumix is tremendous value and the Leica misses out a bit on the exaggerated Leica look their expensive primes have. I just don't see the advantages outweighing it's premium price over the Lumix lens. Luckily, market dictates price, so the Leica is already quite a bit cheaper than it launched for initially. In a kit it's even cheaper, but there the Lumix is only like a 100 bucks difference from body only, so that one really is the steal here.

Making a lens is about compromises, if it was constant F2.8 it would be much bigger and some people would say that it is too big for MFT lens and they might as well go for APS-C or FF. For constant aperture there is12-35mm F2.8. 24-120mm eqv. lens can of course never mach optical qualities of prime lens, but for what it is, I do like the optical qualities of the Leica a lot.

Thought about the new 12-35mm f/2.8 actually, but people were saying the old one was performing slightly better even. I like the 12-60mm Lumix as a flexible daytime lens. Because it save quite a bit of money, you could get one of their excellent f/1.7 primes to go with it. I really do like their Leica 15mm f/1.7 and Lumix 42.5mm f/1.7. Great value lenses. And small. And sensitive. The 42.5mm f/1.7 was the first affordable OIS prime even.

Fortunately there is a lot of options to build a MFT lens kit according to the personal needs with various budgets, I just hope that there will be some zoom faster than F2.8 available in the future.

Yeah, the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 gets a lot of love from filmmakers using the GH-series cameras of course. Especially with a focal reducer. And I personally like (and have) the combo, but it's quite big and heavy. And I have the cheaper non-electronic (non-Canon) set-up, with Nikon adaptability, so everything is all manual (which I do not mind that much). I have recently been considering the Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 14-35mm f/2 SWD which is a Four Thirds lens, that you can electronically adapt to Micro Four Thirds as well, which would be that sort of faster than f/2.8 zoom and one place recently dropped it in price from roughly 2699 to 899 EUR... but it's old glass and I'm not sure how it holds up against the modern standard. Also not sure if it's that much more convenient to use compared to the Sigma one, so I'm not quite sure on that one yet. I do love primes. They're so small and they make things simple. Because of the single focal length they're optimized all the way and create stunning results and bokeh. I love the 25mm f/0.95 options out there on the market. Or the Voigtländer 17.5mm. The Sigma DC DN 30mm f/1.4 or the Olympus 75mm f/1.8. So yeah, fortunately we've got many many options! ;)

I bought the Lumix 12-60mm and find it a brilliant lens on my G80. I did consider the Leica as I already have a Leica f1.4 25mm and it my favourite lens, but the high cost on the Leica 12-60 made my mind up to buy the Lumix. I'm happy with my choice.

I've got 2 of the Lumix 12-60 lenses (multicam filming) and they've both got the really annoying trait of not being able to zoom smoothly. With its plastic zoom ring; if you 'pinch' and turn it clings to the inner parts, resulting in a jerky zoom. You have to wrap your entire hand around it and avoid any squeezing. Leica is coming tomorrow - second hand bargain £340.

It appears the Leica is now more than 4 times the price of the Lumix. The price has really dropped for the F3.5 Lumix. If you are on a budget, the Lumix is even more attractive now.
