I super stoked for the S9. I do a lot of adventure travel content for youtube. Currently cycling from Canada to Argentina. This is the camera to ve been waiting for! When your on a bicycle your storage realestate is severely limited. Paired with the pancake lens i can literally keep this in a fanny pack, or my bar bags. I kostly shoot f8 and higher for those landscape shots and i love manual focus. I think it was hand tailored for my use case. The panasonic lenses are so much smaller and lighter than other lenses i find. Currently i have an a7ii with the sigma 24-70mm andnthats a beast. Im excited for this.

Hi mate. I shot this using (mostly) the 18mm f1.8 for the side shots and the 50mm f1.8 for everything else. I haven't heard any updates yet. I think it was scheduled for later this year or something like that. Hopefully, it comes out soon; the pancake lens left a lot of people underwhelmed.

@@GeekyNerdyTechy i agree we need samyang or sigma pancake lens. f2.8 is fine for a full frame sensor. Now that Nikon is opening up to Tamron and other third party lens manufacturers, Lumix should too before it is too late. The S9 is the only no-grip classic designed digital camera other than the crazy expensive fully manual focusing Leica M10 and M11. Sigma has fantastic compact prime lenses for L mount: you should have borrowed the 17f4 or 45f2.8 for this demonstration to who this camera is meant for. The real competitors are the Sony A7C, Fujifilm X-T50, Leica M10, M11. Fujifilm X-T50 has almost no grip, it is not full frame but with its small f1.4 or f2 primes it is a very strong competitor especially since it has a decent EVF, too. The X-T50 is a bit less expensive, but not that much. I am totally brand agnostic just like most customers, I am looking for a no-grip, very small camera with very small lenses: S9 is absolutely an excellent possibility. S5 and other gigantic monsters are totally different animals, meaningless to compare them to S9. I have the A7III with the fantastic PZ28135f4OSS, no need another one in that category. It was the S9 that I've been waiting for 10 years since Sony invented the mirrorless FF market.

Even with the 20-60mm lens the S9 doesn’t fit in pocket any more. But with the new pancake F8 lens it does though. All other “benefits” you mentioned can be neglected by the firmware update for the S5II but in any case don’t worth much considering such small difference in the price. The reality is that it can be a lot of fun to use this camera with some really small lens as a travel/street/occasional day-in day-out camera that is always in your pocket. I would love to have it. But for the price very close to the S5II? Meh…

mostly agree, but I don't think it's really great for starting out...I think you nailed it when you said it's a specialty camera. Would I recommend a BMCC 6k to a beginner? No, very specialized for narrative/commercial video. Would I recommend a Leica M10 to a beginner? No, they may want to do something other than B&W photography. A beginner, typically has only one camera, it should be as generic and future proof (opposite of specialty) as possible, so they can grow into the area they naturally vibe with. If someone can recommend this to a beginner, I think they should be able to say they would be happy with it as their only camera. And as far as the size and portability, did you really shoot/enjoy the F/8 manual focus lens? Can't pocket it once you put the 20-60 on it. I only bring this up because I remember the S5II reviews praising how "compact" and "light" it was for a camera with so many features. Now it's like "I will need back surgery after carrying this behemoth" (obviously, I am exaggerating). It's 250 grams more, it's not a RED V-Raptor or something. Anyway, I'm not hating on the S9, I just think the S9 would be a lot cooler, if it didn't have basically the perfect all-around camera, made by the same company, at almost the same price competing with it. The peace of mind for the couple hundred more is well worth it, IMO, because I don't know what I am gonna want to do in the future, and the S9 could come up short for what I might want to do in the present.

Panasonic needs to make some good compact lenses for the S9 to make it more viable for the masses imo. Sony has some excellent tiny prime lenses for the A7C2 / ZVE1/10 cameras. Before the Nikon Z6III announcement I might have kept the S5II on my considerations list, but not any more. The reduced rolling shutter and internal RAW options are worth the extra dollars especially since I have Z lenses from stills work I have done. Nevertheless I think there’s room for the S9 in my kit for personal filming and for other low budget projects where shooting separate verticals and horizontals would take up too much time and when short takes are sufficient. I think it will be a fun camera to have in my bag. Will I miss out of shutter angles and a few other video centric bits? Certainly. But the CFExpress B offload speeds are more than enough incentive to use the Nikon.

My thoughts: S9 small footprint largely disappears with the 12-60…it needs small lenses to make it work (maybe the Sigmas?), not really something you can use for most studio work given the short (!) recording limits (perfectly fine for short clips), does it make really make a difference having 30 luts vs 10…suspect most folks will use 1 or 2 (I may be incorrect). As far as FF it’s relatively small footprint (with a lens), fast to post to social media and can still produce some serious photos, especially handy for travel. Quite like it and most folks could work around its limitations (other than the lenses). It also seems fun to use…a big plus IMO. Great review! Curious how it would compare to something like an A7Cii, which has a better selection of small lenses I believe.

Even with a larger lens the camera itself is still small and comes up smaller and lighter than other cameras. What are limitations to some people are not to others. Not everyone has to have a small lens. And not having small lenses does not mean it “does not work.”

@@salat You purposely misconstrue my point and exaggerate for effect. Like a 100-600 is the only lens available. This response from you is exactly why KZbin is so toxic. You can put a Summilux 35 1.4 on a Z9. Some people like pain. See it goes the other way too. There is nothing wrong with putting big lenses on small cameras. And just because someone has a small camera does not mean they will or have to or can’t put big lenses on it. Also you know well enough that most of the “huge” primes from Lumix and Sigma are not big at all. Not everything you like or do or dislike or don’t do is the same for everyone else. Don’t see how that is so hard to understand. By the way just cause you may need to workout 🏋️ to carry a 100-650 or whatever does not mean other people do. A lot of good workout programs on KZbin. Not everyone thinks your worldview. 🙄

@@iamhassan9943 so why would they get the S9 over the S5II if they planned on putting a big lens on it anyway, the point here is that if weight and size are your primary concern, then you negate all the benefit you get by adding a big heavy lens. No one is saying you can't do it, they are saying why would you do that, when you could have the S5II, since weight must not have been that important anyway. The biggest selling point of the S9, its "portability", evaporates when you realize you can't put it in your pocket when you use it with a good lens in the L Mount system. So you ended up sacrificing a ton of features, and you didn't even get the payoff (a pocketable camera). The S5II is 250 grams more. For the person who cannot carry 250 grams more, then yes, the S9 truly is the perfect camera for their use case.
@iamhassan9943

@@MaximoJoshua Again, reading is fundamental. What is a “selling point” for you may or may not be for someone else. Just because you want to throw something in a box does not mean it has to stay there. I don’t understand how you can’t see that! Putting a big lens on the S9 does not defeat anything. It just means you put a big lens on a camera. Also, someone will get the S9 over the S5II…because they want to….🤯😱. It does stake photos and videos you know. Again 🤯 a camera that takes photos! I know your mind is blown again! that someone would do something YOU think is nonsensical. Sony has a lot of compact lenses for full frame but the quality on their image is poor to say the least, problem with a larger sensor is always gonna be the lenses sadly, they can only be shrunk so much. And the S9 is not very good for photo regardless what anyone says, a camera with 26ms readout speed and no shutter mechanism, its just not good for pictures. I suppose for video it makes more sense, Sigma have a few excellent small primes for L-mount which would go good with the S9, its still big but its lightweight and that is a lot more important.

Imagine if you DID need to do that tho.. Not that hard to shoot for 10-14min, press stop. Then start another clip and do it all again. 15min+ in one clip is just something people complain about and not really use lol. IMO.

@@TopshelfJunior All your videos are 1 to 3 minutes long, and that's perfect for your style. But the VAST majority of youtubers don't make 2 minute videos. You asked if I shoot longer than 15 minutes at a time? The answer is yes. Every single video. And I'm not some special case unicorn either. Plus, that's not even touching on filming hour long interviews, weddings, or corporate gigs. Telling the client, "oh sorry my camera cut you off mid-sentence, run that again" is very unprofessional. Saying that every 15 minutes to a client is even worse. And the "just press stop and press start again" won't save you in that situation. You're still gonna have a blackout no matter how quick you are. And god help you if you just missed a vital part of a ceremony or a wedding. And if it's just me talking to camera, I have to run back and forth from the camera. That's extra mental bandwidth I'm dedicating to watching a timer, instead of focusing on what I'll say next. So a 15 minute record limit isn't "just something people complain about." It's a real life necessity for a huge number of youtubers. The gear is supposed to work for us, not work against us. I'm happy for people that only shoot 5 minute videos though. Could be a good deal for them.

@@65Drums Ok, got it. So when are you purchasing an S5ii or S5iiX ?
@65Drums
@65Drums 9 күн бұрын
@@TopshelfJunior It's between the S5iiX, A7Cii, and Z6iii at the moment. That 2k price range is tough to pick from right now, they're all great in slightly different ways.

This "I can fit it into my pocket thing" is really bothering me, why the hell are you saying it? You can only do that if you don't put a lens on it. The grip sucks and it's way easier to drop, on top of the fact that it's not as well built as the S5ii. Yes it's a full frame camera on a budget that can be used professionally in certain limited situations. It's not trash, that's not what i'm saying, but stop promoting it for what it's not.

S9 as a MFT compact = fabulous S9 as Full Frame compact using big FF lenses = silly Come on Panasonic. Bring out an MFT version of the S9 and allow people the choice between genuinely compact or a bigger sensor.

You've seen the s-series lenses right? They aren't at all big. They are also quite lightweight. Once the new zoom comes out it'll be a great match for this thing. That said, I am hopeful for M43 version at some point.

To sum up the video. S9 is a expensive toy, S5ii does everything the s9 should

Except it's too large for a travel camera. The S5ii doesn't do quite everything that the S9 does. Especially autofocus. There is no other anamorphic camera at that price point.
