FINALLY! After what, 37 years I know what may have been wrong with our GE 4 head vcr. We got it in around 1983-84? Sometimes you would put a tape in and it would moan and take off on a high speed play/scan. Then you would pause the unit and it would slow down and finally pause. Then it would be ok to press play. We never fixed it. In 1986, I bought the most reliable, vcr we ever had, a GE 4 head stereo vcr. It was used non stop. Had a really nice variable speed slow motion. I only used the best tapes. I miss that machine. I even remember part of the model# I wish I knew what it was...1VCR6015B OR something really close. Great job! I love your videos.

Well done. I've not come across Deoxit D100 before, I may buy in some of that (but it's very expensive in the UK). Yes, Hall Effect sensors are forever failing on Sony Beta head drums, I've got good at replacing them without having to remove the lower drum / motor assembly.

You know, if you'd slather this thing with mud and throw it in a ditch for a couple days before "finding" it, then "restore" it in silence, you'll get a zillion hits like all those Asian channels. Just make sure you use a wire brush and water hose on it at some point.

Good video -brings back old memories. I repaired vcrs for years. On this mode switch assembly I would take a fiberglass pen (had small bristles on it) and clean until the grooves in metal were smoothed out ,then clean with contact cleaner/then lube. I would clean then slightly bend back the metal prongs for better contact..

I saw in the video that when u plugged in the rca cord,,u plugged in the white into the red rca terminal,and the red into the white rca terminal. And of course,,,just as u said,,u had forgot to resolder in the mode switch too as the machine didn't work. As for the red and white plugs the wrong way around,,sound still works,,but the left and right channels are reversed . Good how u had found a single broken dry joint in the motorised Capstan after u had fixed the mode switch,,,and linked a wire to get the continuity connection on the Capstan circuit board,,,and the machine works as it should,,playing tapes nicely. Not bad repair job for a machine found on the roadside,,,as the rest of the mechanism inside looked pretty good,,,even the drive belts too.

That is a real good curbside discount to me where anything I find at the curb where someone really don't want them anymore such as Electronics and Appliances where it says "free," then I can come, pick them up and take home with me! I like VCRs that I can play around with it like play the videos, or record the videos from YT page. At leased this VCR quality is better than the Chinese Made Funai VCRs. =)

I had a capstan speed issue on my Sanyo VTC 5350 Beta (VCR 4200 in North America), tried messing with the capstan free run adjustment without any results, until I discovered that the wires for the tracking control knob had become desoldered from the servo board! Apparently the tracking potentiometer is in series with the servo circuit?

the mode switch on these vcr's is the electronic equivalent to the carburetor needs cleaning. as for what to do with it you could let it collect dust in a thrift store.

I think you enjoyed that one, a breeze in comparison to the sony dat hell machine lol. Yes it's deemed dead and out of date, but they did the job well enough :-) My favorite was the Nv 333 and similar, well made old machines.

Hello, I wanted to ask. For what reason is the capstan motor brake used for all vcr’s? This brake in my machine panasonic nv ts 88 always press the capstan disc and making the detonation. the gears stil in good position. thanks :) and good job ! respect :)

Had this very same issue with a Philips machine sporting the G-Deck mechanism. If I hadn't pulled the plug in time it would've mashed every gear into oblivion! Replaced the sensor with one from a scrap machine and all was well again.

Doesnt look like that connector has ever been soldered before. The drive ic looked like it had been touched up in the past.

Was there any advantage to VCRs having those "elevator" type pinch rollers vs the standard ones that just move against the capstan? Just seems like added complexity for nothing.

It was done to change the angle of the tape going around the guides to reduce tension so the tape could remain loaded during rewing and ff. All vhs prior to that unloaded the tape on rewing and ff.

Amazing Troubleshooting. Query: I keep getting "capstan FG error & associated "Braking Time error" on an ADAT M20 w Panasonic direct Drive motor. Looks Like Capstan spindle Ate some tapes in the past albeit seems to spin presently. Despite formating, I cannot get it to record from record enable. No similar symptoms from this vid. Any thoughts or guidance? Much Appreciated.

Same here, but people put stuff out with a sign that says free before they take it to the recycling. It was actually sitting on their property so no ticket. They had a couple of plastic lawn chairs also with a free sign on them.

I am Looking at what might be a great buy for a JVC BR S800u which sellers tech replaced the servo board. Servo board needing replacement might be cause by other conditions in the deck? I have used JVC BR S525DXU & BR S822DXU for years, both now need cap replacement but servos seem great in these older decks. Any advice? Thanks, great channel.

I wouldn't touch any of those old worn out VCRs. If you need a VCR find the youngest model you can. I use one made in 2012 for archive work. Runs flawless. Need a tbc you say? Nope just a better capture device. For digitizing you do not need a tbc. That's all done in the digitizing phase providing you are using something better than a dazzle.

i have a question i had a panasonic pv-6000 portable vcr an it was playing in black an white an had a wavey picture an i replaced most of the caps an it still had the same problems i couldent figure out why if you know what the problem was plz tell me my guess the video head was shot cause it made a rubbing sound an it also had another problem the tape was runing kinda slow an had erratic flickering in the picture i tryed the wet finger trick an poked at things an found a piont were it stoped i replaced the cap an it didnt make any change it puzzled me badly an i gave up i replaced all the caps thta had corasain on there leads but never worked so i gave up i no longer have it how ever i did teak down the video head an the source of the rubing was the coper contacts the the drum ride on seemed to have come undone so it posible the drum was falty but i didnt open it right i damaged it kinda if you can tell me whats the cause for these problems or if its posible make a video on how this happens i would love to know vcr repair is still something i cant do an i use these portable vcrs for filming an my homemade movies

Wavey picture and rubbing/squaling noice suggests tape stiction. The color issue sounds like the AFC/ACC circuit is out of adjustment. Did you clean the tape path well?

I change Iots of parts. If i come across say a broken gear on a machine I own I will generally not fix it because i don't need the device. For example I would never buy a laser to fix a CD player or DVD player because I have many spare machines. I have no source for most parts. I don't take chances buying parts on eBay. Have received too many counterfeit or bad parts.

Why do solder joints (especially old ones, 30+ years old) sometimes look like they have a crack in them, when they probably don't? It's almost like a phenomenon that creates a "ring" around the pin on the solder joint?

Wave soldering at factory. Thermal shock from heating and cooling of component leads. Dissimalar metals gave different heat expansion coefficients.

They are far easy to work as compared to auto opration system ...as it has different motor for ejection....timming of auto opration vcrs is a pain in butt....

I never dealt with m2. I just know what it was. I believe NBC in the us used that format. Here everything was Betacam SP. I had betacam for awhile when I was doing professional video acquisition mostly as stringer work for the CBC and BCTV before they became part of Global. I used professional hi8 (sony evw300) for most of the private work, weddings ect because I needed more than 20 minutes record time, but for stuff headed for broadcast I used a betacam. The company leased one for a few years and I would keep it at home and run out and chase down wrecks and fires for the news. Biggest wreck I covered was an empty coal train that came off the tracks because the engineer hit a curve a little too fast.
