The extra contrast at 4:40 in the prores clip is due to a levels issue where many NLE interpret prores as legal legal range instead of full when recording log. That is why the image is more punchy. The only difference should be in level of detail and maybe a little more saturation

Possible to confirm if all the HD modes are downsampled from the 6k sensor? Especially the ProRes. If so, that could be a great option for quick turnaround work or clients who only need HD. Thanks!

I have an S5II and pretty happy with it just recording in 5.9K/6K h.265. I like to power the camera with USB-C batteries as I do long shoots so I find having one USB-C PD battery for me is better than carrying around a bunch of internal batteries, especially since I use a tripod most of the time. On the X you can't use an SSD and power the camera via USB-C at the same time which isn't so good as the reason to get the X is to use SSDs for the high bit rate recording options. 3:59 - The GH6 never got a UHD ProRes record option and I asked Panasonic a number of times about it and they couldn't get an answer from the Japanese team as to why not, so maybe the S5II X won't have it either, but if so, it seems a strange resolution to miss out in ProRes when it's such a common resolution nowadays.

I think you can power the x with a dummy battery hooked up to a power bank that can output 9v 2a. That way the usb-c is still free for the external ssd.

the de-facto standarization of Davinci as the edition tool and BRaw fit nicely together. Personally I miss 6k 3:2 in all those new formats, but I do not need raw or all-i with the good 10 bit codecs, so no X for me.

About the look, I love it. I might miss the red part just a bit, but white, NO. The lumix sighn for me was bad idea from the start and to be muted dark is clever. It also can be removed completelly. Panasonic sighn will make more sence to me

Would like to get the sii x but when manufacturers advertise low light performance would Panasonic make the dials etc on the sii x unreadable, especially in low light!

With the ProRes appearing more contrasty, Resolve often interprets footage slightly wrong if there's no metadata being read. Have you tried switching from video levels to Full-Range on the Resolve clip attributes? Right click, clip attributes and then data levels to full?

The all-i and prores just take up so much space and most modern computers can handle h265 anyways. I would say the more interesting feature is actually the SSD recording with the new kondor blue top handle.

My computer can do 265 very easy and its not the fastest. All i in fact is easier on your computer than long gop. Its canon files that are hard to edit. Panasonic files are great

You really can’t. The only that comes close with value for money is the BM Pocket 6K pro, but that’s a very different camera. Or perhaps the GH6, but that’s micro four thirds.

​​​@@DynamixWarePro it's also $300 more expensive, doesn't have features like direct SSD recording, 6k Blackmagic RAW recording support, All Intra recording, Internal ProRes, Real time LUT shooting, Custom LUT monitoring, Anamorphic desqueeze, Anamorphic stabilization, shutter angle, synchro scan, monitoring tools like waveforms, vector scopes, false colour. On top of this, just image quality wise, the Lumix has a full stop better dynamic range, better low light performance, better IBIS. The R6ii has some advantages like 4k60 oversampled no crop, faster rolling shutter, better autofocus in higher frame rates and 6k60 ProRes RAW support, but a lot of these also suffer from overheating.

Is there any option to record full sensor open gate 3:2 as ProRes 4:2:2 10bit? Either internal or via ssd? Not the 17:9 5.8k mode. From what I understand the full open gate is only 8bit long gop which totally defeats its purpose…

Who cares about you UHD… You can take DCI and turn it into UHD with a simple crop. I’ve been a Sony user my whole life, and for stills I will stay with Sony but for video, this blows away everything. ProRes and blackmagic RAW for this price? Are you kidding me!?

I prefer the non-blackout look of the original Lumix S5 II since the button labels and marks are easier to read. Having the option to record high-resolution (4k and beyond) ProRes files to external storage is good but I would rather do it internally. Hopefully the Lumix S1H II will provide that feature through the use of CFexpress cards.

@@2424rocket You are right about outselling the SH1, but not the next iteration of it. Since Panasonic hasn't upgraded their proper cinema cameras (EV1 and Varicam) in years, it seems like they are focusing in the Lumix series as the answer to that market. Remember, the S5 series is their entry level mirrorless camera.

Unless you can write off the cost of CF Express as a business expense, I really don't know why people shun the usb out, over having to pay over 50 cents per gigabyte for CF Express. Is a $30 mount and cable sticking out the side of the camera really worth hundreds, if not thousands of dollars? Best Buy has a 4 terabyte San Disk usb c drive for $250. Paying almost $400 for 500 Gb is gross, I really don't understand it vs USB-C out.

For the price increase, I'd get the R6 Mark II as it has full frame, oversampled 4K 60 (the mode I would use most) and better/faster photo features vs the crippled/cropped 4K 60 on the S5II/X (as well as crippled AF modes even in 1080p high frame rate modes). James Reader did a great comparison of the S5 II and A7IV and R6 II and the S5 II fell behind in image quality for video (noise and sharpness) though it did have very good IBIS.

If you watch the video you see that the presenter is talking about video tools and features, not photography. Does the R6 Mark II has Apple ProRes RAW and Blackmagic RAW external? Does it have ProRes 422HQ and ProRes 422 internal recording to SSD? Does it have Open Gate recording? For videographers all this features are more important.

Except it's dynamic range is severely limited for a camera of its caliber by the absolutely abysmal Analog-to-Digital converter capping linear data from the sensor to around 12 stops dynamic range. Canon's applying a ton of noise filtering and sharpening to the footage. Panasonic does the opposite - leave it majorly untouched and make the image look more organic. You can check this by running the footage through a color channel splitter to separate the Y, Cb and Cr channels and you'll see just how much under-the-hood processing they are doing to reduce noise.
