Hi Gordon, Appreciate you going thru various modes of image stabilisation. I'm watching this on 1080p monitor and I must say that contrary to your comments at 15:25 it seems that IBIS was the most pleasing option, EIS on its own was jittery, and the combo of IBIS+EIS+Boost seemed to get the camera working so hard it took a dive in Auto Focus (although it could have been caused by light change). I'm looking forward to your direct comparison of S5 vs GH5S for video in the near future ;) Unlike the S1, this looks more like the camera that paves the path to L-mount alliance land.

I am about to order the S5 with 20-60 lens. I owned a GH5 with Leica 12-60, got great results but was tempted away to Canon’s 90D because of the auto focus. For me that was a big mistake, I soon realised that any auto focus system is imperfect, but the biggest issue is the relative lower video quality. I have tried everything but I am not happy with 90D videos. I wish I had stayed with Panasonic. Thankfully the S5 seems like a great camera for me at a reasonable price

Wow, this beats GH5 in full frame mode, over and above Canon R5 that overheats so much yet overly priced. S5 is good to carry for travelling, filming shows, concerts, excursion trips withgout worrying about outside temperature and overheating. I'm looking forward to upgrade from GH5 to S5.

Been following these new Lumix full frame cameras as a M43 G80 and G9 user with much interest but sadly these aren't good enough for wildlife shooters - yet! With regards to AF I have always found Panasonic autofocus to be annoyingly unreliable but with that said its hilariously easy to just use manual focus for vlogging which is 100% reliable and much more accurate than Sony or Canon AF which can often fail okay not as often as Panasonic but when it does it fails spectacularly!!

I'm using a G9 now for 50/50 travel photos/film. Like most people in this camp, I'm questioning whether I should step up to FF to future proof myself before sinking even more cash in to µ43. I was actually on the verge of adding both the 10-25 and the 50-200 to my arsenal when the pandemic hit and I decided to put it off till I could travel again. Now that the S5 has been announced, for not much more i could get both a FF body and a lens in the same focal range as the 10-25 lens alone. Would the IQ be just as good? one's a (very highly regarded) pro lens, and the other a kit with not much in the way of samples and reviews at the moment. But can the sensor IQ make up for this? If so, I am essentially getting the S5 body for 500 bucks (2300 for the S5 with kit minus 1800 for the 10-25).
@slows7284 жыл бұрын
You will get better dynamic range with the S5 and you can add the Sigma DG DN OS 100-400mm, it will be sharper, less expensive and with less noise for the same ISO compared to the 50-200mm on your G9. But the G9 stabilization is better, the 10-25mm is a very good lens (but heavy), better than 20-60mm S. The 50-200mm is only 650gr compared to the 1130gr of the 100-400mm DG DN. It is a tough choice ...

I think you asked the perfect question - ‘is autofocus working sufficiently well for you to use confidently...?’. For many, I’m sure autofocus is the number one priority superseding every other feature. The trees looked a little drunk with Boost IS. The autofocus lost your face a few times in the shadow areas more than the bright areas. In my opinion, the autofocus is fine for for vlogging; for narrative or general video production, (I believe) you can override the autofocus with the focus ring on the lens. However, it is a nice feature to just focus on the framing, pan/tilt, gimbal, shoulder rig, etc and not have an AC. Impressive how clean the image looks at 25,000 ISO; dual native ISO at 640 & 4000? It has the same sensor as the S1H? So same 14+ dynamic range? What is the dynamic range of the S1? S1 vs S5 "for video" would be a helpful video. Thanks Gordon!

And... still don't have any single wide angle prime lenses for entire MFT system, 8,9 or 10mm, similar to 14mm and 20mm pancakes lenses... or even simple manual focus lens with no electronics for video, landscape photography and again, for time-lapses... for simple tripod use. Moving forward Panasonic, leaving behind all people with your old cameras, without any new codecs updates or new pictures profiles! This one will get you started at $2299 with a kit lens... and then, they will tell you, we will have 5-in-1 $2800 new lens, two years later... like with G9... Great Job, Gordon! Laowa 7.5?
@naturepi4 жыл бұрын
@@evenaicantfigurethisout it's an option.... but I meant the native mft lenses from Panasonic. Last decade they are making best video featured cameras, but haven't produce a single manual focus cine lens for video, a simple inexpensive set of glass for videomakers... Of course, we can adopt many lenses, including Laowa(which produces horrible color fringing), but that voids all features for lens geometry correction and artifacts in camera bodies, which corrects most issues with supported lenses in firmware. Panasonic could of done that many years ago, but they decided to cripple entire MFT system... for years... since GH1-2... "funny" thing is, last year they insulted entire MFT owners community, who invested if their glass, with 5-in-1 10-25mm lens, setting the price of $1800(US) while selling most bodies around $700-$800! We already have 12, 14, 15, 20 and 25mm... we only need 9 or 10mm ultra wide small pancake primes for around $199... I have 3 MFT bodies and also own 2 hybrid cameras(FZ150 and FZ300) with 25-in-1 Leica lenses, 25-648mm f2.8, one of the best glass I have for video(yes, constant f2.8 recording un-cropped 4K with zero distortions), Today FZ300 still sells for $399, the entire camera!... M A R K E T I N G!!! Speaking of which, the S5, same G9 body($904 shipped from B&H last year) with FF sensor today costs $1899 plus tax... question for everybody...would you pay an extra $1000 for full frame sensor "to move forward"?

Thank You for the great review Gordon. Beautiful camera that unfortunately ignores the main reason for many to switch to mirror less- superior auto focus. It is hard to see Panasonic surviving if they don't make cameras with mainstream appeal-pity.
@thewalkingvloggingman71522 жыл бұрын
Oh please. Panasonic does not care about youtube whiners, either you learn how to shoot in manuel focus or go get a cheap overpriced Sony, Canon or the overheating Fuji. And Panasonic will be in business a very long time. It's funny that no one complains about the micro 4 thirds Black Magic Design which has no auto focus but wanna complain about Panasonic, SMH.

If the dancers are in a show and you're in the audience, it should be fine, but if you're on stage and closer to them, you'll prefer the continuous AF of Sony and Canon.

The focus is realllly slow. That would drive me nuts. I can focus faster manually. While the camera doesn’t overheat, it’s not being asked to do very much either, so that’s not surprising. APS-C crop for 4K 50/60? Meh. Over exposed in the woods. Highlights blown out, and shadows blocky. Electronic stab very jerky.

May I know why should a pure videographer select a stiils camera rather than a dedicated camcorder for his work?! Ultra HD capable camcorders from different brands can be bought little cheaper than this camera you are talking about. Those will offer unlimited recording time, great zoom range and excellent video quality. So, why are still cameras so much focused on videos these days?! If I ever shoot pro-level video; I'll definitely pickup a camcorder for that job. That may be a Panasonic as well.
@cameralabs4 жыл бұрын
Most dedicated camcorders have v small sensors, non-removable lenses and far fewer pro features. Models like the S5 are not stills cameras, they're hybrid cameras, designed for both.

@@quazisanjeed6395 The same versatility and image quality in a dedicated video camera costs much more. The Sony FX9 is more than £11k, the Panasonic S5 with with 20-60 lens has a street price of around £1600. Another £1000 will buy a good mic, cage and Atomos Ninja.

@@borderlands6606 pros aren't bothered with those. They select pro-grade equipment. The one presented here doesn't meet those requirements.
@borderlands66063 жыл бұрын
@@quazisanjeed6395 Professional equipment is any gear that makes money for the user. A content creator, wedding videographer and broadcast filmmaker have different requirements. For some a small sensor and fixed zoom lens would be adequate, for others not so. If you want the highest visual quality and industry build standards (interchangeable lenses, high data rates, solid codecs, ports, electronic or manual focusing devices), expect to pay x5/10 of the enthusiast equivalent. Mirrorless cameras can achieve most of those criteria, which is why they are increasingly popular for revenue earning jobs.
