Jessie4Pink there isn't much money in consumer electronics now. back in the 80s and early 90s there was more to be made. I left in 2003 as I could see where the industry was headed as far as consumer electronics went.

That is a very important point about the screws ! I have repaired 2 of these tv's ( one upper buffer board & one y-main board) & I was sure that the loose screws were the culprit of the failed components. This is the most comprehensive tutorial on these tv's on youtube ! THANK YOU.

Yes they are the culprit. Not just on Panasonic. I have had a few Samsung sets with the exact same problem. What happens is through heating and cooling, the metal chassis and screws are different materials, and they expand and contract at different rates as the heat and cool. This works the screws loose. This has been a problem with many electronics going back to when I got into electronic repairs in 1984. I can't count the number of failures over the years caused by loose ground screws.

Don't know about that. The last few cars I have owned have been well over 10 years old before a wrench touched it. My Escape hybrid is 12 years old now, and the brakes were done for the first time at 110,000 KM. It has 170,000 on it now. My Volt is almost 6 years old and all I have done is repaired a few flats thanks to a nail in the road.

Looks like my Panny is on the way out, picture is flickering from perfect to washed out/distorted colors, and now i am occasionally getting the 8 blinks when i turn the set on. Your video is super helpful, i think i will order the parts (probably the SS board) as i checked for loose screws/connections. Would be a shame to see this TV go to waste. If Panasonic had used screws with lock washer in the first place this would have been avoided .I doubt the average consumer will open up their TV to re tighten all those ground screws and they really shouldn't have to . Again , another great example of poor engineering and assembly of today's throw away electronics with self destroying boards after warranty is barely over. Rant over , keep up the great work

This problem is not unique to Panasonic. I had the same thing happen on my Samsung plasma. Got the screws tightened before it went boom.

This was hugely helpful to me with replacing my A board in my 50u50 (turns out it wasn't a bad HDMI port, but a bad Displayport to HDMI adapter, so now I have a backup board!) I couldn't have done it nearly as confidently as I did without you (and the service manual! LOL). PLUS, now I know how to access the service menu (not that I would know what to do with it). Thanks!!! Do you have any guesses as to how much longer it has to live? It's been going for 9 years and I'm wondering how long the screens are supposed to last. Thanks again!! :)

Be very gentle in prying the IC chip, or any component, because if the soldered leg is not liquefied, you run the risk of removing the copper pad. In which case you may have to scratch a new copper surface with a razor knife. I've replaced larger components with excellent results. IC chips are now a nightmare to me lol Wish I had a magnifying lens like yours. Don't like the one that came with my station, and my USB microscope wants to be too close to the working area. Excellent tutorial though!

I LOVE plasma sets, the colour on them is just beautiful vivd and sharp, and i HATE the dull washed out colour of LCD with a passion, you cant compare the two really, its like comparing a mini to a rolls royce

+Ryan Scherbluk LCD and LED sets are the same. They use Liquid crystals to bend the light rays passing through the panel to either allow it through the second polarizing filter or block it. Color is added by the color filters attached to the panel.Plasma the primary colors are created by phosphor much like it was created in the old CRT. The difference is on a CRT the phosphor is stimulated by the electron beam striking the inner surface of the tube. A plasma set creates an electrical discharge through Neon and Xenon gas to produce the 4 state of matter, plasma. This plasma discharge produces UV rays, and those UV rays excite the phosphorous and make it glow.Plasma TVs, like the old CRT TV sets are cool. They also have a better picture. OLED has promise too, because it too uses phosphorous to produce color, but the source of UV light to stimulate the phosphorous is microscopic organic LEDs.

Hi there. I just acquired (for free) a Panasonic TH-50PX60U Plasma, and it turns on, but the screen is black (with all lights off in the room, you can just see the screen "glowing"). Doesn't seem to respond to anything. Took off back cover, and the "health" Green LEDS are both lit up. Nothing looks out of place or broken...

Man your good, my Panasonic plasma packed up, I checked all the usual, and you mention bad earths loose board , well I'll be dammed I tightened all the screws and she works, I've always, had a soft spot for this plasma, yet not comfortable with the very high voltage in plasma's, so I was careful, and my favourite TV which now lives' in my den works, my wife bought a 50 inch internet tv by Hitachi, I'm the winner with my Panasonic 50 inch plasma so thanks you taught a old dog a new trick.

The reason the ground screws work your way loose is due to heating and cooling of dissimilar metals. It doesn't just affect Panasonic I've had this happen on Samsung and the LG plasma screens as well but very common on Panasonic because the dummies didn't put lock washers on the screws to stop them from backing out and that's what was in the repair kit was lock washer screws

It's good to know about the screws tightening. My problems is to find out where I can get the repair kits for that board or other bothere. I"ve looked high and low for a decent schematic for the 32PFL5332D/37 Philips LCD television. Maybe it's the age of the set but I just can't seem to locate a wiring schematic. I'll keep looking.

My tv now won't turn on at all--the display when turned on makes the usual 1 click noise when you first turn it on and then displays a black screen and stays there--with the red LED on the front bottom screen displaying power staying at a constant rate with no blinking. Whereas after this happens the remote doesn't work or respond to the tv, and also the buttons on the tv do not work at all--all buttons including the menu--yet the power on the tv is on TCP46st30

I have a P50ut50. Made a pop sound when turned on and now just hear a clicking sound from a relay on the PSU. I already has the SS board repairs 5 years back. There is no blinking led. It is totally off. Just the relay clicking sound. Would you perhaps know what could cause this?

So, what exactly is the cause for the arcing in the first place besides the screw being loose? If all components and boards are functioning properly, there should be no current flowing towards the ground screws in the first place, no? Yet, I've read a few stories where people have replaced these shorted transistors, diodes, etc. and immediately upon plugging in the TV, they will hear the same pop and the same board they just repaired will have died again. Thoughts??

Panasonic in all their wisdom decided to use the metal chassis as a ground return. The 4 lugs on the corners of the board are NOT connected together using an internal ground. Therefore when one of the screws comes loose, that terminal, and all the components that are tied to it loses their ground bond, and the pad potential rises and eventually arcs to the metal chassis causing components to go pop. They wern't the only ones guilty of this practice either, and it is nothing new. This crap was happening back in the 80's as well. Many sony receivers went snap crackle and pop when a specific ground screw worked its way loose.

I believe that I am having the exact same issue that you repaired so this is a pretty good find! However, I noticed a decent bit of brown discoloration where the short occurred. Is the board toast at that point or do you think that Jimmy repair kit will do the trick?

At 15:55 you point to arcing burn at ground screw connect and there is also a burn on the red cable next to it so this was respectable arc.

Excellent tutorial and job. I have same tv bought in aug 2012. Had same issue in feb 2014 and board replaced under extended warranty, now it trigrrred again after roughly 1.5 years and tv wont turn on with 8 blinking leds. Stll have extended warranty so lets see how it goes

They are going to replace the TV with some other LED model but not sure what exactly. Hi I have a Panasonic 65 viera cast 2009/10 version i believe. It went out after it was moved. I began to notice that it would power off on its own and I would here clicking sometimes. I also noticed that it did get very warm/hot too when it would be on. After reading these comments I am now aware there was actually an issue going on. I have not been able to take the back off and attempt to inspect but I will try today. I am not an electrician at all but I can be somewhat handy with tools. Do you have any idea where I can possibly order parts for this older unit and can you send me your trouble shooting guide? TC-P65V10 I do not own a sodder. Oh it eventually powered off and I unplugged for a day powered it back on it stayed on a few minutes and went out again but the 8blink flash came back on. So I am guessing something is either bad or disconnected per your video.

I know you have seen on some of the old equipment and TV / Radios, the ground screws sometimes are Soldered to the boards so Ground wasn't lost and the screws couldn't become loose from the boards flexing due to heating up.

Yes it was very common to solder the screws down on many Sony receivers that suffered the loose ground problem. The problem is most screws will not solder unless they are copper, which is rare. Most screws are steel, and solder won't stick to steel or aluminum no matter how hot you make it.

I recieved two lg plasma tv to repair sir and ask if you could help me along one is an lg 42PA4500 when plug into power the power led comes on the screen comes on for about a second and then blank screen but i measured all it voltage the 5v , the va 57v , vs 203v etc the y sustain board reads all it voltage label on it all it transistors read good and diodes and resistors reads good i only saw a small blue ceramic capacitor flake at the front of it , can you please advise me on what to do sir.

Great video, the exact same screw arched on my ss board as well. I've purchased the kit only to find out that repair shops will not install it for me. Guess I may give it a go on my own. Otherwise, what's the best way to find a guy like yourself that would do the soldering for me?

Its not hard to install this kit.I can understand why shops would not want to install it. They want to be able to pad the bill with a hefty diagnostic charge, and if you go in with parts to install, the guy gets his nose out of joint. I have had threats by others that are feeing their business impacted by free advice. I spent 20 years in the business and if I was still putting food on the table repairing electronics, I would probably be exactly the same way.

I believe I destroyed the connectors for the ic while removing it. I soldered across the pins and heated it up,when I picked it with my tool the pins came up with the ic. Can that be repaired?

Yes the board is repairable. You just need to use some fine wire to repair the lifted traces. Make sure you have a good magnifying glass, and you should be able to see where they went.

+James Machalik I have 3 Panasonic plasma. 1 never has problems, 2 broke down. Both serviced on the channel. Not many faults. Panasonic made a good plasma. Samsung are also good but have had more problems than the Panasonics.

+Jesse Clark Melt some solder onto the copper trace at the screw hole.I have no idea where you can get the connector. You might have to find a blown board, and get one from that, as they are specific to the model of TV. Be very careful with the with the ribbon cables that come off the panel, as if you damage them, the panel of done.

@@nickwashburn723 Again I don't need to because what I work on is not overly ESD sensitive. When I do work on ESD sensitive devices, which would be laser diodes out of the drive, I do use ESD best practices like shorting the short pins before removing it, grounding myself out to earth ground ect, but those are rare instances. Consumer gear is pretty much bulletproof as far as ESD goes and that is what I work on, so no I don't generally need to wear a ground strap because there is no threat. Also I do not wear synthetic clothes that are going to build up a charge. Bare chips and some semi conductors are very sensitive when they are not installed, but once installed even those very sensitive components are relatively safe. This is why the short pads on the laser are shorted prior to disconnecting, and opened only after connection. Because once the laser is unplugged, the flat flex cable will act as an antenna and will easily pick up a chare that is applied across the diode junction will pop it.

Panasonic Viera 65 inch plasma TV about 8 years old. Starts to click on then fails, then blinks 8 times, pauses and repeats 8 blinks. How likely is this the SS board as suggested by Panasonic?

James Bell what happens on Panasonic is they neglected to put lock washers on the screws that hold the boards to the chassis. over time thermal expansion of dissimilar metals cause the ground screws to work loose and the TV starts shutting down. eventually it will blow the 4 parts documented in my video that shows the installation of the parts kit to repair the ss board. all the screws need a lock washer and tightening.

Providing that the board you were sold off fleabay is not bad then your problem is solved. Myself as you can see I prefer to replace the components that failed. I did order a replacement buffer board for my Samsung from ShopJimmy, and the first one they sent me was bad, but they promptly replaced it, and that TV has been working perfect ever since. Aside from the crack in the screen, it now has a lovely permanent burn in of the Global TV logo in the bottom corner of the screen as the only channel I watch on that TV is the morning news in my bedroom as I am getting ready for work, and during the news they crank up the logo to 110%. So after 2 years of use, 1 hour per day I can see the logo when I change channels. Doesn't matter though, as the screen has a crack, and I got the set for free. Invested 25.00 to fix it. Love my Plasma sets. The one I fixed in this video is sitting in a closet awaiting one of the other sets to break, and then it will be put back in service. It was my mother's set, and I traded her a smaller Sony I had because she had to move to a seniors facility and they wouldn't allow plasma. Believe it or not, facility rules, LCD only no bigger than 37"

how bizarre they would ban plasma screens? I have a brother in a convalescent home in Los Angeles and I replaced it TV with a 42 inch plasma. Why would they ban plasma screens? Power consumption? I call BS on that one. The early ones were power hungry, but the later generation sets were all energy star compliant. The reason for plasmas demise as far as I can tell was economics. They cost more to make than LCD, and 90% of the population was convinced that LCD was better just due to the shear number of manufactures that flooded the market with them.

Excellent tutorial, thank you for post, Sears through an extended warranty had repaired this 8 flash code and did SS board 3x, 2x after new television replacement, I think sears has apparently raped me repaired same SS board 3 times, and each time after new tv replacement,right side out, then left side out, they want 100 just to look at the same part replaced 3 times, this TV is well cared for, aside from the same issue---the first one my mother worked at sears as asset protection manager almost 20 years and got as an open box she purchased the sears warranty, within 1 year less than one year the left side initially went out they, and replaced SS board 8 blinks same thing on opposite side, as per Sears warranty team, They replaced yet another SS board after watching these and ss jimmy, i know they just took flat out advantage, i want to call Panasonic concierge viera but do not know terminology, Sears robbed me because they had no choice but to replace the tv because they couldnt fix, can you please help me, i love this TV, i love plasmas, i don't want to buy a new TV, I dont have a lot of money to fix it or have repaired my husband is on a fixed income, but does know about electricity and diodes, i bend diodes for him, his father is an electrical mechanical engineer, far from fixing televisions, sadly, but I know my husband can do this I have faith he can, but on the other end of the spectrum i think Panasonic should know what sears has done as far as robbing their customers, and I just do not know terminology, my husband and I both just watched your video, and it would be new waters for sure, but he is well versed with resistors, capacitors, coil relay etc. but what it has to do with being able to explain to Panasonic with proper terminology is what I am aiming for, as you well know when warraty fixed with Sears speaking with people from Panasonic is a totally different story, I was wondering if there is anything you can recommend? The fault in this sets design is multiple grounds. The problem could have been prevented by soldering a ground wire to all the ground points around the board, or put in screws with lock washers. The kit I show is a repair kit that Panasonic sold to their dealer network that contains the components that usually fail when this problem happens. Not putting in lock washer screws is just asking for it to happen again. This set has been fine since I fixed it. It's my set now. It was my mothers set, but I gave her my Sony while I was fixing this one, and now she is in a seniors facility so the smaller set I gave her is a better fit for her room. I love my plasma TVs too. I collect them. I have 3 Panasonic, a 42 SD, 42 1080P and 50 1080P. LG 42 720P. 3 Samsung 50`720 sets and a Samsung 63 1080.p.

+Manuel Contreras Taken from the troubleshooting guide for the 8 blink code:Abnormality of the sustain drive circuit. Open or loose connection between the SS/SS2 Boards. and FPCs from the panel (SS52 - SS54 - SS55 - SS57). Open or loose connection between connectors C10/C20 or C26/C36. Wrong diagnostic by the A board As you can see 8 blinks is the SS drive circuit. The componets that failed on my set are the most common. You will need to troubleshoot further. It also could be on the y scan drive board, or the buffer boards. This trouble will require troubleshooting with a meter. My diagnostic videos show real world problems I have encountered, but these failures are by no means everything that can go wrong with electronics.

+12voltvids The boards with the 8 ribbon cables (also called FPC, or flexable PC) is the buffer board(s) Some sets have just 1, and others have an upper and lower. The fact that your set has 8 FPC tells me it is a 720P set, as the 1080 have 10, and the 480 have 6 of them.The scan drive is what the buffer board plugs into. It is the large board next to the buffer boards on the left side looking from the back. In the center is the power supply, and to the right is the common scan board, which is the one that had the component failure on my set.There are many different names depending on the manufacture. Panasonic refer to the boards with totally different names. I have referenced them using the Samsung names, and LG names in the past as those were the most common sets I have worked on.On Panasonic they call the buffer board the SU and SD for scan up and scan down. The SC is the scan drive board, whcich Samsung and LG refer to as the Y sustain.The SS board is on the right, and it affects the entire panel brightness, is called the X main on Samsung, and the Z sus on LG.Horizontal lines in an otherwise good picture are most likely a failure on the SC, or the SS board, perhaps the power supply. Check the capacitors on these boards, an ESR meter is helpful in determining of a capacitor is starting to go bad. Of course if you had the ribbin connectors undone, check them to make sure that they are properly seated.If you check my Samsung buffer board replacement video, part 2, you will see the symptom of an improperly seated connector as the first time I plugged the board in there was an issue that caused thick black lines in the picture.

I have FILIPS 42PF9966. hard turns in the morning when it is cool. When you turn it on after 10 to 20 attempts red light flashes me one and 8 times in succession. If you turn it off while hot and turn it on again, then fell without problems immediately. I do not know what the problem is, so please help me. Thank you.

+nikola mijatovic OK if I understand the question the problem is only when it is cold. If you turn it off when hot, and then back on it starts fine, but when cold you have to try turning it on multiple times to get it to start?That sure sounds like a capacitor problem, likely in the power supply. I had an LG42 plasma a few months ago that did exactly that. When cold it had to be turned on multiple times to get it to stay on. Turned out to be 2 bad capacitors that had budging tops. There is a video for that one on my channel.

You need the troubleshooting guide. There are a few things that can cause the 8 blinks. You have to isolate the board as I did. Also did you buy a brand new board or an Ebay special? I have found that most of the boards being sold on ebay are bad.I have a 55" right now. Have not published the video as the set is not fixed, but the replacement board received was bad, and had a totally different symptom.This is why I troubleshot to component level and ordered in the component kit, ,because I knew I would have a working board afterwards.

+lee rossi Horizontal lines are usually problems with the scan drive board (the one on the left side that plugs into the panel buffer board) or the power supply.Check the ground screws first. If these are OK, then you might want to check the large capacitors on the scan drive boards and power supply. Also make sure that all your connectors are properly seated. Won't hurt to reseat all of them.

Hello from 2024. Literally every Panasonic plasma tv I have or have had, went through the pain of a failed board. If not the A board then the SS board. Frustrating. My 60” is now blinking 8 winks. Time to open it up. Again! Not sure which board it is this time. But I am sure I do not have skill to replace components on the board(s). In past repairs I replace the whole board. I am just crossing fingers that shopjimmy still has parts for this TV. Seems like I’m a fairly regular customer with them. LoL.

OK if it is this model of Panasonic (or any of them from the same production run , that includes the 42" 50' and 65"versions) if could be a few things.You have to isolate the circuits, like I showed in this video.The troubleshooting guide helps a lot. You can find the troubleshooting guide on google. The failure I had was caused by loose ground screws causing component failure on the SS board, and it is a very common failure.I have had 3 sets in the past year with the same fault, but didn't film them because they were the same fault. The kit comes with a transistor, diode, resistor and the IC, but in all 3 of the cases I had the resistor was fine, as was the transistor on one of them, but I change all the parts in the kit.

You've probably got dirty tape heads if you're getting mosaic noise on the video. You can clean the heads with a piece of paper and rubbing alcohol if you don't have an 8mm cleaning cassette.

Hi, An excellent instruction video. I learned a lot. Can you tell me where you got the Panasonic trouble shooting manual from? Also, can you tell me the name brand of the liquid rosin you use? It would be easier for me to find some here in the US. I never use an electric screwdriver. It's too easy to over torque something or ruin a screw head. +Alejandro Alvarez It is a VERY common fault. I have fixed 6 of them since publishing this video. The TV in the video was my mothers set, I traded her a nice Sony because I had to order parts, and I no sooner did this one and another came in. I didn't bother filming those because the fix was the same. The lock washer screws in the kit should prevent a repeat failure.

+Alejandro Alvarez All 7 that I fixed had the burning at the same screw on the top.Why this happens is heat. Heat rises and this screw gets the biggest fluctuation of heat from cold when the set is off to warm when it is on. This causes thermal expansion and contraction of the screw, and because the metals are different this happens at a different rate for the screw and the base metal. The screw is a ground point, and when it works it's way loose arcing is created between the board, screw and mounting lug. This causes a voltage surge on the board which blows the parts out. It is a known defect in the TV, and Panasonic issued a service bulletin. Because it is not a safety issue they don't recall it. I'm just waiting for a class action lawsuit to happen like is currently facing Samsung over the bad capacitor problems they have. These TVs are not a bad TV, in fact they are probably one of the better TVs you can buy, but they did have this problem, all because someone forgot to put a simple lockwasher on the screws to keep them in place.This is not the only set with this issue, Samsung and LG have had similar failures due to screws that work their way loose.

Quick question maybe you went over it already but what happens if i dont replace the (ic) didnt feel comfortable replacing because i didnt want to bridge the solder replaced everything else tho but in the end i still got the same blinking red dot code. The IC is included in the kit because it was blown by the root cause, the bad ground. If you don't change the IC the other components it drives won't function. You need to change all the parts in the kit. They are supplied for a reason.
