Panda Police Ford and Sunbeam. Restoration of Corgi models no. 506 and Dinky no. 270.

Two diecast model companies Corki and Dinky produced police models from the Panda Police series at the same time. Dinky made a Ford Escort model, while Corgi made a Sunbeam model. Both had a characteristic blue and white paint job. Having original models from both companies, I decided to restore them in one film to show a comparison of Sunbeam and Ford. As usual, my models were very damaged, but I managed to restore them to a satisfactory condition. As usual, apart from painting, I replaced the damaged parts and made missing ones and provided both models with reproductions of the boxes in which they were sold in the 60s. Thank you for watching the film, I publish videos with car repairs on Tuesdays and Saturdays. In the film, you can turn on subtitles in your language with commentary on the film.

When various Police Forces took delivery of their Ford Escorts they would receive an equal number of blue and white vehicles. When they went to the Police garages to have the extra equipment added, and the engines 'Tweaked', the doors would be removed, and blue ones fitted to white cars, and white ones fitted to blue. Of course, some vehicles remained one colour, but generally they were a blue/white mix, to make them stand out. I have met many people who bought old police vehicles and found that the doors had been swapped many years ago. Lovely restoration as usual. Nice one 👍👍👍

Outstanding! It’s not just the great restoration work, it’s the way you reproduce parts. I was a terrible child in that I used to remove tyres from my cars. Many of them sit on their hubs and I hope to renovate them someday. I will use your method to reproduce tyres. I will also have to look at the UV curing of clear resin to make clear panels and windows. Thank you Paul!

Great job. I think the 'Sunbeam' may have been a Hillman Imp. My big sister had one when I was little. 😊 There was a Sunbeam version as well, I think that was the Sunbeam Sport, but I may be wrong.

It clearly says Sunbeam Imp on the bottom of the model. Hillman became Chrysler Sunbeam in 1967. So what was the Hillman Imp became the Sunbeam Imp.

You were lucky on that Sunbeam (Hillman) Imp. Most of those end up with fracture suspension. It would've been great to pick your brains on a repair. Also agree with you on reproduction sppares. They usually always require a lot of fettling to blend them in. As they would've been Police livery, was right to match the blues. Great job done. 😊

I joined the Met police in the mid 1980’s and sitting alone and unloved in the corner of the yard was an Austin Allegro in those colours with the old Met coat of arms on the drivers door and passenger door We also had a navy blue Ford Transit with a solitary blue light and the same coat of arms and ‘Police’ in big white letters on the side That was over 40 years ago

Pawel, these two models each had challenging considerations. I confess the fit of the doors was somewhat problematic, and it didn't seem the engineering layout of these two diecasts were very inspired. I am not a fan of plastic suspensions. I'll have to use the Interwebs to find out what "Panda Cops" are. All that being said, these two examples look a damn sight better than factory originals. Lovely boxes, too! ❤❤ Stephen 8:14

The boxy car is a Hillman Imp, I'm pretty sure of it. Unless Sunbeam manufactured them also? (Sunbeam being focussed on sports cars more, perhaps they tuned up the old Hillman?)

It's a Sunbeam. Chrysler Sunbeam took over Hillman in 1967. The Imp was built between 1963 to 1976. So 4 years as a Hillman and the rest as a Subeam/Singer.

Singer discontinued 1970; Hillman, Sunbeam and Humber lasted until 1976; Hillman Hunter and Hillman Avenger now rebadged as Chrysler and launched new car Chrysler Sunbeam in 1977. Peugeot bought Chrysler Europe 1978, Chrysler Hunter discontinued and the Chrysler Sunbeam and Chrysler Avenger rebadged as Talbots until production ends both cars in 1981. All Imp based cars were discontinued by Chrysler in 1976.

0:30 - your knowledge is wrong, look at the name on the base. The car was sold as either Sunbeam or Hillman Imp. The one you refer to must be a NSU Prinz 4, a completely different car.

Not NSU, Sunbeam (see my other comment to you) - and this model was available in several different liveries, just for the police version (there was also a civilian one, but that's another story) 1) White, with black hood and doors, white "police" stickers on the doors (red letters) 2) White, with black doors and roof, white, luminous door panel stickers, black letters 3) Turquoise, with white doors and front half of roof, luminous door panel stickers, black letters The box illustrations always depicted version 1), so Paul's box is fully correct. If you really want to be nitpicking. You could object, that the car gets painted blue, not turquoise (as it originally was), and that the door stickers are not luminous, but I very much doubt you can replicate those luminous panels, and as for the colour, Paul explains in the video, that he picked this blue colur for both of the cars to make them a matching pair.
