Nice game. You are the reason I bought games like Arboretum, Port Royal, Codenames, Bohnanza, Hanabi, etc. You inspire us with your great show.

Yeah, the Port Royal playthrough sold me that game and it's been a favorite around here-- also had to pick up Circus Flohcati, a more intro version of a push-your-luck game when I'm in a more lightweight crowd.

It's not nearly as sophisticated as Port Royal, but it's fun and probably a good gateway game for those friends of yours who haven't done very many games and/or can be scared off by the apparent complexity of modern games.

Even in a Cthulhu-themed game, the rules are simple and the play feel is not heavy, so I think it's a good work that you can easily play as many times as you like.

@50:31 They are putting a cultist on every gate location and Aaron puts the Arkham one on the Train Station instead of the gate; a tiny error that I don't think ended up being a factor but thought I'd give it a quick mention. Reign of Cthulhu is a great alternative to regular Pandemic congrats on the win!

I'm looking forward to trying this one. The original Pandemic theme did not appeal to me AT ALL, and I've been hearing about it incessantly from reviewers. This makes a good alternative, as the Victorian fantasy horror theme seems to me much more fun, glad to hear it's a good game. Good job as usual, you guys playthroughs are great, though in this case I skipped over the middle part so as to not act too much of a spoiler for me...

The first time we played this, we had lost in about three turns - and that was on easy! I think, though, we may have not been removing the shoggoths when they caused an awakening at the gates, so things got out of hand pretty quickly. My feeling about this one was that it was OK overall - but there are better Cthulhu-themed games, and better Pandemic games.

On the pronunciation of Cthulu- Lovecraft gave a bunch of different pronunciations for the Old One's name through his life, including Ctulu and C'Hlulu with a super heavy guttural. Since it's an alien god name not meant to be spoken by any on this fragile mortal plane, he probably wouldn't fault us for inventing the popular cuh-thoo-loo pronunciation after his death.
@marquonuk2 жыл бұрын
Just a quick thing: the name "Dunwitch" is one of those where you don't say the "w", so it's pronounced "Dunnitch". Have yet to play this particular game, but it seems to follow the usual common gaming style adopted by all the Cthulhu games. I wonder whether you could mix and match all those games with a little adapting here and there?

The game looks really good, but I felt Nikki didn't get to add much to the planning throughout this one. Hope she had a good time!
@heccubus17 жыл бұрын
Alex, she did. The planning aspect of these types of games are hard to keep everyone involved and that is kind of unfortunate. Her only real disappointment was that it seemed a little easy for us in the end, although we would not have survived another round or even a turn or two. We had a lucky combination of investigators and events happening at the right time for us.
@thepardoner20597 жыл бұрын
I would like to have seen more commitment from the players to the thematic atmosphere of the game. Sure, Reign of Cthulhu can be played in a purely mechanical, solve-the-puzzle fashion, but it has much more to offer for players who willingly give themselves over to the story their actions suggest. Referring to the towns as just "yellow, purple, red," etc., for instances, leaves much to be desired.

I know I'm a couple of years late, but in his last round of the game Dave forgot that his first action was sealing the gate (something Nikki tried to point out!) so he moved one space further than he should! Didn't affect the game though, so who cares.

I have not played many coop games and I always worry about the mega gamer running the game. Everyone needs to have input or they are not playing. This game looks interesting and, while they felt they won comfortably, it really was close. Not sure how I would do playing it, but would certainly give it a try if someone I knew wanted to and had a copy. Good run through. As always, the guys kinda do the most talking and Nicki kinda gets shunted aside a bit.
@Rik777 жыл бұрын
Derwood Bowen I think that's just cos they know the game and also because this is a show. They are good at explaining, for the viewers benefit, what the options are available. I'm pretty sure it's agreed to be like this when they plan filming.
@firekirby1236 жыл бұрын
One great Co-op game I recently played and now adore is Zombicide (Black Plague). That game has SO much going on that, even with me playing my first game with someone who had played a ton, the entire thing wound up a chaotic, hilarious mess anyways. Because each player is in control of their own character's progression/skill tree, the only thing having a veteran in the game did was help us understand the gameplay, keeping things more fluid. The only real metagame-y thing that can crop up in the game is that the difficulty ramps based on the highest-leveled character, which usually boils down to everyone spreading experience gains evenly. But then, that also means someone TRYING to alpha by leveling themselves too quickly and stealing kills inherently hurts everyone, so discussion and teamwork absolutely feels rewarded in the game.
@barclayv82826 жыл бұрын
Shunted aside? I don't see that they're stopping her from talking/contributing. They let her talk when she has something to say, yes?. "Everyone needs to have input or they are not playing"?. Game police are right up there with the "mega gamer". That you're concerned with someone "running the game" is a little ironic, maybe. Your worry over coop games might lessen if you put aside your expectations of "evenness" and just play.

Unlike Normal Pandemic which gets tougher with more players, Cthulhu Pandemic gets easier as you don't need to be in specific locations to switch cards.
@jimhockey43746 жыл бұрын
cutthr0atjake I’d agree but you still have to be in the same location and can only exchange clues for that town, which can still be logistically tricky if the cards are spread across the group.
@cutthr0atjake6 жыл бұрын
@@jimhockey4374 True, but thats a lot easier than in normal Pandemic. In normal PANDEMIC each card can only be exchanged in one location. In Cthulhu Pandemic there are multiple locations each card can be exchanged.

I think my biggest problem with playing these cooperative games is that if you have once ALPHA player, you essentially are all just acting as his/her AI and they end up being the only ones making the decisions (and when you guys play cooperative games, you tend to all let Aaron run the game this way somewhat).
@heccubus17 жыл бұрын
Bryan Irrera, others say Dave runs the games. Part of the issue is we are making sure we discuss all of the options we see. In most cases Dave or Aaron have, at a minimum, read the rules or have played the game and they have the most insight to the game. What we try to do is present them and then let the player decide. It does not always work out that way but that is the goal. Additionally we are showing the game to an audience. If you have an alpha in your game you must be patient and point out that everyone is playing. It works. Thanks for the note and for watching.
@kimfjeld25707 жыл бұрын
That is sound advice, Lincoln. I use the same method to deal with alphas and I can verify that it is the way to go - you want people to feel good and have fun! However, it is part of a coop game to entertain options and player perspectives. These types of discussions even takes place in other types of games where there are a high degree of player interaction. I welcome that type of meta exchange, and that is why I like to watch your videos.

It would be cool if someone was assigned to be on Cthulhu's side and he tries to sabotage the rest of the guys, sometimes removing them from play or by trying to make them all join him, and you had to find out who it was and get him to a gate and push him in esentially

@BKStarlet084 жыл бұрын
this is from the future, but that was a legal move. She had the Detective character, which only requires 4 cards to seal a gate. The relic card she activated, right before moving into the gate space, allowed her to use one less card she would otherwise be required to discard in order to seal a gate. That's how she was able to discard three cards to close the last gate.
