Pakhawaj as accompaniment to sitar or sarod is not very common. Evenn dhamar is generally played on tabla. Here sound oc pakhawaj I find is overpowering.

Which rag did he distort ?this vasant is the original dhrupad version. Thanks to him daring to bring traditional music to us,pakhawaj ,dhamar and veenkar style. With due respect to vilayat's genius ,how many times he did that ? Let's respect both, since we are lesser mortals in music ,we will gain more.

This is Basant in the purest and most traditional form as it exists in the Dhrupad form, not the Paraj Basant that is peddled by Khayaliyas. If there is any musician who reached the pinnacle of raagdari in instrumental music it is Ravi Shankar. Also, his layakari was exemplary as he is seen playing on a complex tala like Dhamar. Vilayat Khan was an ataayee of the highest order as his taleem under his Guru and father Enayet Khan was incomplete due to the latter's untimely passing away. Vilayat Khan had a very limited repertoire of ragas. There are many traditional ragas that he never even touched because he had absolutely no taleem in those ragas. The handful of ragas he played, he never maintained the purity of those ragas as well, and while playing those ragas he would wander over to other ragas close to the raga he had announced in the middle of the performance. Vilayat Khan had very mediocre to no raagdari at all. His layakari was also pedestrian. He played only on Teentaal all throughout his career. It is quite plausible that he didn't know any other tala.
