Anytime I hear a born Muslim, especially one with a platform such as this, say, “We need to support our revert community,” I’m touched-except when I hear that followed up by a marginalizing statement such as reverts only going one of two ways in their practice of Islam: rigid or relaxed. Let’s take care to avoid perpetuating stigmas with over-generalized statements such as this one. 1:00:25 Born Muslim or revert, every single Muslim experiences ups and downs in their iman. Listen to the sister carefully as she backtracks and admits born Muslims experience the same thing. There’s no difference when it comes to that fluctuation we experience. In short, the reply to this question was disappointing and probably should have been more carefully addressed without bias. We must uplift each other as an ummah and politely encourage one another to embrace the other, regardless of our backgrounds. Let’s remember the examples of the original reverts known as the companions (may Allah SWT be pleased with them all). As a revert sister, comfortable in her deen, looking for marriage, I was seeking advice in this video and esteemed panel. I took a lot of good lessons from it, but then the surface-level tips and obvious discomfort from the panel in response to the revert question left me feeling demoralized.

We have to try harder in our marriage. 1. Change self talk about your spouse 2. Change the energy you bring in the relationship ( your happiness is your responsibility) 3. Change the way you make your spouse feel 4. Show more affection 5. Change your approach 6. Change your focus (live and love with a higher purpose) Do it for Allah sake.

I was saddened at what I saw at 1:00:25, when asked “What advice would you give to someone planning on marrying a revert?” The dead silence followed by laughter felt as if no one knew how to “deal” with reverts. Reverts are every bit as Muslim as born Muslims. When the sister in the blue said “she can come to the rescue” because no one else had any advice to offer regarding the question being asked, I wondered “why is this a topic requiring rescue?” As a born Muslim with revert friends who inspire me to be the best Muslim I can be, reverts shouldn’t be made into outsiders of the Muslim community the way seemed to be in this lecture-requiring born Muslims to work on THEM. I know reverts who practice 1000x stronger than I do and many others that I know. The silence and laughter and “advice” given in this lecture make reverts seem like they’re the ones that need our help. Not ALL reverts should be generalized like this. A Muslim is a Muslim period.

I agree very disheartening. This shows the inherent bias against born Muslims marrying a convert within our community, even at the highest level.

Born muslims are used to marrying within their community. Sometimes it is even hard to marry outside. They definately have bias and there is cultural barrier as well. Muslims just need to be more open minded.

I have not listened to the whole conversation. But from the short part I listened to, I heard many beautiful talks ( not being dismissive of the speakers' expertise and knowledge[Jazzak'Allahu khairan to them all]) but I think the reality is often different and not merely about spouses not appreciating this and that, not making the required emotional connection, or not communicating effectively. The problem is not much about what they might be doing or not doing but rather what makes them behave the way they do. A person may have good social , emotional, and interpersonal skills but if he/she has the wrong partner ( meaning someone who they have nothing or too little in common with, a shared view or vision to a certain degree ) these skills wont make it work. Based on my own experience and understanding I believe the key to successful marriage is having a partner with whom you have something in common ( a shared world view, a shared passion about the deen or something else, a shared goal etc.) And even if you don't have anything "worldly" in common but you are both muslims who understand the basics of your roles and responsibilities according to Islam and try to fullfil them to the best of your ability and sincerity, that will be enough to save a relationship. I also believe that even though we can make some generalizations, relationship issues should be analyzed and treated case by case into their real context, given real circumstances and factors etc.
