I know this is an old video and the concerns have already been addressed but: First, it seems your tube's either gone off or has separated, the oil paint should be thick and gloopy, so the paint you placed in the palette was mostly linseed oil which will never dry. So assuming you can get a fresh tube with no problems, you'd put a little blob on a sheet of cardboard or similar and allow any excess oil to seep out of it. Once that's done, you'd mix in your thinner. Second, you didn't use enough thinner. Washes work best when they're basically tinted thinner, and the pin washing thing will work better then too. So basically, it didn't dry because you had too much paint in your wash, and what paint was there was mostly linseed oil rather than pigment so yeah, that would never dry. They're a pain in the arse but when you get them working they're dandy. Hope you've got it sorted by now!

The flow through capillary action seems to vary depending on the paint/thinner ratio and the medium onto which wash is applied. The lack of capillary action is not an issue, as the dabbing to induce flow is perfectly fine, especially in light of the results, as seen in this clip. But the comparison of enamel and oil is appreciated, with both seen as qualified to use as an alternative to expensive, dedicated bottles of wash. (Nothing against commercially available washes by noted manufacturers.)

I think you might could "create" a panel line on the border so the wash stays there

oil paint takes weeks to months to dry depending how much thinner you use and how thick you apply it.

ive been using it to wash my gunplas

oil paint wash is only good if you plan on washing everything, the thicker you apply it, the better it goes on.

Thanks for this video! I think you should post your videos hobby/gundam message boards like GundamEclipse and also share it on FB groups, theres plenty of active Gundam FB groups that always asks these types of tips/guides.

Tony Micilotta I don't know why but I just can't seem to get my GundamEclipse approved... I just don't get any response. So I have now joined gundamforums so hopefully the guys there will find this stuff helpful :D

any thoughts on how you dry oil quickly. Ask Da Vinci, his shit is still drying. lol I ask my mom who is a career and life long oil painter. She said "you wait." I was like grrrr.. I have a ton of oil paints on hand and never touch them for that reason. They do create great color but they take forever to dry. If you're lucky some very thin oil paints can dry in a few weeks. Some can take months, even up to 6 months to dry!! Oil just really isn't for the modeling community imo. Acrylics or enamels, that's pretty much it. Enamels give better depth and more color range so I tend to like them but they are more caustic when airbrushed and need more time to dry whereas acrylics dry very quick.. a few minutes.

Just as an update I have just put down a panel wash on my Rhino (Warhammer 40,000 APC) and so far so good- it has even dried on the area I started on -but I wouldn't attempt to work on the model for another 24 hours or so- unlike yours so far it has stayed in the corners and crevices. It still has time to all go wrong and I'll keep you updated but so far so good. Did you have a squish at your tubes? I wonder what all that runny sh*t is?
@TonyMicilotta9 жыл бұрын
shirlzknight Well I jammed in a tooth pick and gave it a thorough stir and it now has become a paste! Thank you! I then thinned it with artist white spirits and it's sticking in the corners and panel lines of a part! I'm going to have to post another vid... sorry guys!

Great news! Now you can enjoy your paints as they were intended. I got a nice result today with mine- the paint appears to be completely dry but I am still hesitant to touch until a full 24 hours has elapsed. I am going to use some of the 'Falcon guys' techniques on the rest of the model and see how that works out. Cheers :)

Good advice below but another thing that may be worth mentioning is the oil paint contains....errr I can't for the life of me remember what its called but it's the main ingredient that takes so long to dry and you can remove the majority of this by using a piece of cardboard as your pallet and letting it sit an hour or so before use- you'll be able to see on the card the oil being soaked up. And like Rob says below I also own the Abteilung oils from MiG and mine are thick like normal oils not runny like yours- I can only suggest giving the tube a squeeze for a few minutes and see if that helps?! Good luck and thanks for the upload!

shirlzknight Oh I did try using a cardboard pallet but I didn't let it sit for an hour so I'll give that a try. It is weird that my oil paint is so runny... I'll give it a squeeze and see if there's any paste in there!

Yea it could be it has just separated- can't think why! Good luck with that! what did you think of that guys Millenium Falcon? I had no idea oils could be used like that! I have a tank sitting here ready to do my first ever oil pin wash on but after that dries (fingers crossed it does!) I shall be trying out some of that dudes techniques.:)

Tony Micilotta I just went through all my tubes of the same gear as yours (502 Abteilung) and they are all thick and gloopy! Maybe you have got a bad batch ??

shirlzknight yes the rendering on the Millenium Falcon looks great! So clever! I would love to know how long it took to dry!

Maybe purchase swan lighter fluid or a generic brand rather than the ludicrous priced Zippo stuff?

Yep, the linseed oil had separated so since posting this vid I've given it a good stir and it's a think paste :)
