Although I agree the Overhaul panel can be confusing to sequentially read, it has another purpose and I think it was to show how overbearing he is, his presence burst at the seams and it also make him feel unhinged. Horikoshi sacrificed clarity for imparting a feeling or impression of Chisaki.
@jordanholt91702 жыл бұрын
My take on the panel is that Overhaul’s desire to control Eri is so great that he is reaching through the panels to try and grab her
@solidpython49642 жыл бұрын
imho it reads super clearly because overhauls like giant presence on the page pretty much exactly visually delineates how ur supposed to view the page. just think of his arm like a chute in a chutes and ladder board lol, u start at deku in the top right, u go left until u hit chisaki, his arm leds u down to the bottom right, and then u make ur way left again.

Okay, I get that the Overhaul panel can be seen as messy, but I don't care cause that shit is goated and raw and kino

I love when MHA messes with the panels to give you that feeling that you're IN the action. It's one of the few manga's I feel that can truly give you the same amount of adrenaline in each fight just as the anime.

As a manga artist myself, I've been losing my shit seeing how genius Horikoshi has been with his panelling the past few chapters. Amazing breakdown, this fight definitely deserves it.

Fully agree, MHA is a masterfully made and created and drawn manga. And has incredible panelling in it, done intentionally and well made by Horikoshi and his assistants, along with his amazing writing, clever and intended chapter titles and amazing and incredible breathtaking artwork as well. Horikoshi is a GOAT for a reason. And Horikoshi is also a master at parallels and callbacks also in his story. The best motion panelist of all time manga artists is the God of Manga and Anime himself, Osamu Tezuka, Dragon Ball Akira Toriyama as you said, Horikoshi is also very good and Oda from One Piece as well is very talented at conveying motion as well. And the best artwork in manga as a whole is Takehiko Inoue with Slam Dunk manga and Vagabond and Kentaro Miura from making the legendary series Berserk. The manga artists we've experienced through the years has truly been amazing, we don't deserve them. The My Hero manga is amazing and easily the best product, but the anime is still great too despite some peoples opinions out there.

And what about Murata (One Punch Man manga) ?
@mykephoon58363 жыл бұрын
I love the paneling in Villain Hunt when Deku fights Nagant. As the fight continues and she shoots more and more bullets at him and explains her story, the bullets transform into the panel borders as Deku evades. It works both as streets through the eyes of Deku of getting closer to death as well as close in to transition to her exposition
@glacity8 ай бұрын
I'm looking at some of the panels from that fight now and, a couple times, the bolt that pops up whenever his Danger Sense activates ends getting used as panel borders, then the next panel shows the danger. So cool
@giovannidalpozzolo33633 жыл бұрын
10:00 this is how i read that panel: top left first, attracted by the imposing overhaul panel. Then top right and down, following his hand. Than bottom left. It is a bit counterintuitive at first but once I figured it out it just... Flows. With all its confusion, i can't help but love that page
@pd51473 жыл бұрын
Yeah that one of my favorite panel in MHA
@JosephSciola3 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure if it counts as Panel Warping, but one of my favorite recent examples of Horikoshi playing with the panels is during Deku Vs. Lady Nagant, when there are Nagant’s bullets in the panels themselves. It makes it feel like Deku is constantly being bombarded by them.
@Adm1ralDoom3 жыл бұрын
I never thought about the messiness of the Overhaul panel, but I raise you this: it’s full of rawness and swag so it doesn’t matter :) Anyway, amazing video, you def pointed out a lot of things I didn’t think abt before (like the Best Jeanist panel)
@xidjav18363 жыл бұрын
One thing I notice about paneling is when in the overhaul section, is that the cultural way to read a manga is top right to bottom left, Overhaul screws this up by framing the panels contradictory, crossing what your suppose to read and how it is framed, as a western reader reading that section feels more natural to start from his face (Top left) down his fingers (bottom right). So a simple fix would be to just flip it horizontally, but that would mess up the chronology of the sequence essentially reading it in reverse
@xidjav18363 жыл бұрын
Also a way to somewhat fix this is to frame it around the arm, like an upwards arc. So essentially flipping the image horizontally to flow well. Top right he starts priming his jump, Bottom right is his leap, The fingers are Deku and Eri's surprised reaction And top left is them preparing . But either you read it top right(preparing the jump)>top left(preparing to fight)> bottom right(jumping so fast)> bottom left(surprised reaction) It would still be intellegable
@xidjav18363 жыл бұрын
But what do I know, I'm just a guy that reads comics and manga proposing a fix that is radically changes the scene

I think the Overhaul Panel could be fixed of all the problems you mentioned with a simple trick: *Mirror it.* Then the first thing you see as a reader is the "GIVE HER BACK" speech bubble, then Overhaul's desparate expression, and smoothy trail through the arm until the fingers blossom outwards and all is clear.

My favourite instance of sequential panelling is in 280 where red riot rushes in. I think the scene before that does a really good job at created this feeling of a "suspended moment in time" as we watch Mina hovering in the air about to crushed by Gigantomachia, only to have Red Riot rush in from the right side of the page to push Mina out of the way.

Some of my favorite paneling from the recent chapters: Deku and Bakugo growing up as Bakugo apologizes, showing how all the two have known each other and all the have been through together The space between the panels becoming Danger Sense as Deku feels the hostility of an entire mob

What you call “sequential imaging” is what comic artist Scott McCloud dubbed “moment to moment transition.” Sequential imaging as a term sounds like it could describe basically any imagery in the medium, to the point that Will Eisner thought “sequential art” was a better name for the medium in English overall.

Another one I want to bring attention to is that there was a page where Lady Nagant is asking Deku so many hard questions while firing her rifle at him, partly because she wants to overwhelm him with information. We feel how good she is at this, with blitzing bullets separating the panels with dizzying speeds. It really helps us feel like Deku in this situation, listening to what Nagant is saying all while trying to avoid countless, extremely fast shots.
