For me this is the absolute best explanation of how lightroom classic works in organising images . As a newcomer to lightroom there are many conflicting and confusing videos on you tube . Your speaking voice and the tempo at which you deliver is perfect to allow the instructions to register. Far too many so called experts on youtube who present at a ridiculous fast past almost just showing off how "clever "they are! Subscribed and looking forward to seeing the rest of your videos. Thank you 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Excellent explanation! Just wish I'd watched this video years ago when I started using Lightroom 2! In truth even after all these years of LR experience this video was more than worth watching…clear, detailed, concise! Thanks!

Terrific content from yourself Janine and all of the other contributors at Pangolin wildlife photography. So clearly explained and simple to understand. I have been a LR user for a decade but I now must go off and rearrange all of my content in LR as I now realise it's a mess :) well...I can make sense of it but you just made more sense in 15 mins than I ever have.... 🙏🏻

I wish I had this information when I started with Lr 7 yrs ago. My files are a mess and now going through the process of clean up. Also, if I can recommend to any software company like Adobe or Capture One or Affinity or Photo Mechanic to get a user like yourself to do a lecture on how to use their software and not a sales rep or technical expert. Well done and thanks

I'm with you! I had no idea when I started not to move folders and images on the computer and only do it using LR. I wish I know how to wipe it and start over just to have a clean slate.

This video has helped me understand why I hate Lightroom so much. It sounds like you need to be working entirely within Lightroom's infrastructure and once you deviant outside, you won't be able to find the path again to your images again - as has been my experience. I work at a photo lab that specializes in high end scanning distressed film. We have multiple workstations with multiple drives where the images are stored and multiple different softwares that images need to opened in. Basically, I only use Lightroom as a print engine because it's the best I can find for this but good luck ever navigating back to a folder if I need to make more prints. Grrrr Thanks for the great video!

Hi Greg, yes it needs to be used pretty much exclusively in order for it to work at its best. However, you can use a lot of other programs as a plug in inside lightroom such as Topaz Lab Apps for instance. - cheers Janine

Hi Janine, i have a question and maybe you can help me, i would appreciate it very much. What do i do with the edited photos? i am confused about how do i store the raw images vs the edited images. Do i keep the in the same folder or i can do 2 different or what is the best workflow in your opinion? thank you very much!

I have all the photos on my computer organized like you do, in chronological order: All Photos > Years > Months > Days. Wondering if there's a way for the Lightroom Catalog to follow my established hierarchy structure so I can see the photos at every level in the order of the subfolders within it (instead of by name)? As it is, I'm seeing recent iPhone photos at the beginning of my "All Photos" folder. "Name sort" doesn't work since I have photos from different sources. And not all the metadata "create" dates are accurate, so I can't use a "Date" option. Changing either would be a lot of work. iView/Media Pro used to organize in this fashion. Really miss that capability.

Thanks for this. I am just getting started with Lightroom Classic and I have been stressing out about how to organize my images going forward. Best to get off to a good start. One question for anyone - can you copy and then paste an image sitting in your primary computer folder using finder without breaking the LR catalogue link to the photo you have copied?
@shotsbyscott6243 Жыл бұрын
The answer is no. When you copy a photo using finder, it will break the linkage inside lightroom. When you try to view/edit the photo if Lightroom you will at error indicating the photo is not there. There is a button to find the missing photo. The best way is to move within Lightroom.

Hi Jenine, can you in a video run trough your total workflow. Do you cull images in LrC or do you cull in PhotoMehcanic or Bridge before you import to LrC. What do you so with your exported images?

Hi, I bought the cover on Amazon but the hanger is home made. It is simply double sided velcro 🙂🙃🙂 ... living in Africa without online purchases we have to become creative sometimes!

Thanks. I'm facing a problem with two folders representing physical phones considered as drives by LRC some time ago. I would like to get rid of them (like your Foto Backup folder), but I cannot find a way to get rid of them form the list of Folders. Any idea? Thanks, Stefano

So looking at your back up window, it only back ups the catalog & not the photos? correct? Also looking at your back up date list, how many do you feel you need to keep? 2, 3 , 5, all? Just wondering. I back up once a month unless I import & adjust a lot of photos. I also keep a separate copy on an external of all the original sooc photos , even the throw aways. Just in case, just saying.

I still do not get it, why all the people really move all their pics in folders with their date on it. This is so much work for nothing. Every picture has a timestamp and all the programs out there are so much more mighty to to do sorting, filtering and displaying stuff by date. Way better than you are able to do with a folder structure.
@RickLincoln2 жыл бұрын
I'll tell you why I keep a dated file structure and also why I keep my jpgs in separate folders within the dated ones: 1. If I want to use a photo from a trip that I did five years ago in January in PowerPoint, let's say. It's just easier to go through my Windows interface and grab the already edited image. 2. If I should ever choose to discontinue using LR, I'll have a normal folder hierarchy on my hard drive. 3. Before using LR, this is how I organized. It's easy, I'm used to it and it always works outside of LR.
@flol32662 жыл бұрын
@@RickLincoln I don’t know how this works on windows as I have not organized my photos on windows for a long time. But with mac I can set the folder view to show the content in exactly the same way without putting everything into folders. It’s all reading that metadata. Those folder structures will disappear over time from all the operating systems out there. It will take a long time until they are really gone, but it is happening. So I do not think your system is that future proof. But I get your point and it is legit.
