What are your "go-to" settings? What do you dial in as your default settings at the start of a game drive?

As you said , the light is very important. Without it, the camera will not cooperate the way we wish. So with enough , gorgeous light I love to shoot with F/8, Auto ISO, and at least 1/2000 sec . But I learned that after few years in the field and many mistakes:) This video is very helpful with all that ready to follow settings, but when it comes to life , it's up to the light if we would be able to use any of these. The best way to learn , is practice, practice, practice and allow mistakes to happen .It should be fun after all :)

Thanks Guts - does doubling the focal length also apply to micro 4/3rds?
@NelsonSerrano

It depends on the person and the lens, I have the Lumix 100-300mm and without optical stabilization I would have to use 1/600 or more, but if your posture is stable you can achieve a sharp shot with 1/300. With optical stabilization on I have reached up to 1/50 ... That "rule" is more a way to make sure that your photo will not be blurred because you moved the lens when taking the photo, therefore it does apply but there are cases where you can break it, for example if you have something to support your body There are occasions that with a little support I have to turn off the optical stabilization because it begins to try to compensate for phantom movements (as if I were on a tripod) but that depends on each person and you have to learn to know your lens to know whether or not you can use it lower speed

hank you, very useful Guts. A question if I may, I use a Pentax and use a 450 mm lens on a K-3ii. I find light is my biggest problem, living in KZN, shade is always around where the birds are and I'm always constantly having to shoot at f5.6, to use 500th of a second and above and I've capped my ISO at 1600 which can hinder but I really dislike dealing with excess grain. Have you any suggestions? Thanks so much all of you provide us amateurs with so much help.

Hi David. We all tend to shoot on Manual with Auto ISO. Did you see Sabine’s video explaining that particular set up? We do set an upper limit on the ISO though depending on the body in use.

Good tips but every camera and lens combination are of course different. While not having the opportunity to shoot wildlife at this time a good exercise I have found is to take photos of moving traffic (cars, motorcycles, etc). It also helps to enhance your panning technique.

I watched a few last Pangolin-videos and I think they are very professional with a lot of a good content. I liked the videos for bird-photography from Charl and also those from girls about processing. Very well done, Pangolin!! :-) Thank you very much for your high quality videos! I am really looking forward to go birding with you. Can you please talk by occasion about the best season for birding in Chobe? Especially for particular birds like Carmin Bee-eaters or which birds can be photographed where and when in Chobe riverfront (with you)? The other question I’d like to get the answer is following: if I take pictures by low light with 400mm/2.8 and a flash with 1/250 sync speed will I be able to freeze the movement? As I understand the flash shall do the freezing and the shorter it is (like 1/8 power against 1/2 power) the more probably it will freeze the movement of the animal. The exposure shall be done for the ambient light. But the question remains about my own movement as 1/250 for a long lens is not enough..? So, how you would photograph the leopard jumping from the tree on the twilight/sunset so that leopard is sharp and the sunset is seen? Would you use 1/250FP and shorter shutter speed? And I would like to know the answer for 400/2.8 as well as for 70-200/2.8 because 1/250 probably will work with 70-200/2.8 but not with 400/2.8…? I would appreciate to see some videos for flash-photography (also flash during the day to lighten the shadows) and also spot-light photography. :-)

Hi Elena. Glad you enjoyed the videos. Firstly the best birding is to be had in the months from November through to April (African Summer). the Carmines usually arrive in November and there is an amazing breeding colony not far from us. Unfortunately all the photo hosts who could advise on flash photography are away at the moment enjoying the National Parks reopening...and hopefully making loads more videos. I do know however that they dont use flash very much even on night drives but rather use illumination from the car headlights (front and side if we have two vehicles on a sighting) or the spotlight. Sorry I cant help more. Toby

@@PangolinWildlife Toby, thank you very much for the information. The video about headlights or spotlights would be also interesting. I haven't seen somthing like that in youtube. I did my own video when I was with Tusk-Safaris. This setup is like low-key studio portrait photography. Unfortunately as self-drivers we cannot do such lighting, the LED torches don't work, one need to have Xenon. Such video will definitely bring you more customers ;-) becasue this light-setup can be done only on photographic safaris.
