Fabricating a custom bracket from tube, for attaching the panhard-bar that locates my front axle under the Rover, but clear from the swing of the pitman-arm on the newly mounted Land Cruiser FJ80 steering gearbox.
~ PART#41 in a project dubbed "Nanuuq" to swap out my lifted Land Rover Discovery 2's blown 4.0L V8 & boring ZF auto for a Cummins 4BT 3.9L turbo (Holset Super HX30W) diesel 4-cylinder engine (Bosch P7100 pump) with an NV4500 5-speed manual transmission. The AWD 4x4 will remain with the LT230 transfer case divorced behind it all, & plenty of Dodge 6BT parts too. Another big phase of my custom DIY build to create a do-just-about-anything off-road / overland rig. Did I mention it's a camper too?
~ BUILD THREAD: (Entire build) www.overlandbound.com/forums/...

~ DISCLAIMER: Please do not do/repeat/imitate/recreate anything I do in my videos. JUST DON'T! It can be very harmful to bystanders, your person, your wallet, & your psyche. Don't risk the only "meat vehicle" you get!

Some serious talent there. Re affirms my decision to do ‘economics/geography/art’ at school, instead of ‘tech drawing/metalwork/woodwork‘ was a bad one. Luckily this format that is KZbin has a few individuals to inspire my desire to learn these skills and more than a few tips at an older age. Keep up the great work. Many thanks.

That is an awesome project. I did a complete GM running gear in my rover. 5.3 6l80e 241tcase and dana axles. I had to change the location of my pan hard bar and I did a high steer setup. I had some bump steer so now at ride height pan hard bar and drag link are flat it helped a lot and it is stronger since I used all 1 ton stuff.

This may be a dumb question but! Would it not have been easier and better to swap the bar around so the frame mount is on the passenger side? It was designed as a right hand drive vehicle so making it left had drive was a bodge to start with.
@Tinker1837
@Tinker1837 4 жыл бұрын
I looked into that, but sadly my axle doesn't have the brackets on the axle for the right hand drive bar... weird considering how many other things it has that are RHD bits. I figured it easier to weld things into the frame then the axle tube, plus I think that the steering & panhard bars have to swing from the same side to prevent binding & scary bump-steer effects.

Amazing welding skills! Would you consider boxing the bracket for added strength? And little brace to give little more lateral support left to right? Just my opinion but I feel that track bar bracket is putting a lot of torque on the welded joint at the frame.

Knowing how thin Disco chassis' are your bracket is much stronger than the frame. Check it often?
@Tinker1837
@Tinker1837 4 жыл бұрын
I had not heard they were considered thin, news to me! I was actually a bit impressed with the chassis as I worked with it, since it's as large & thick as most any truck up into the 3/4-ton rating that I've encountered. And fully boxed too, where many are c-channel, but then that's the classic debate of stiffness versus flexibility. A full tube frame build would be the dream, but a long way off yet. This build will likely never "end" 😎

@@Tinker1837 Corrosion is the devil of Disco's. Favourite areas are outrigger chassis brackets, rear body floor/inner wheel arches/rear body on 4 doors around door sills. If its got a towbar make sure the attachment points are sound, major chassis rusting at rear chassis legs and x member, its not unknown for the whole rear x member and towbar to tear away. Soak the box chassis in old engine oil regularly, the original engine would do it for you. Be aware the centre diff planet gears are fragile and along with the halfshafts, don't like being shock loaded climbing rocks, snatching stuck vehicles etc. Treat it kindly and you'll be OK.

@Tinker1837

1) That was a drawing I came up with, actually the 3rd version of it by the time I did the filming, but ended up very near true to life from it. 2) Yes, for sure! I've often thought of a dry-sump system for it, but due to complexity that will have to wait for a later phase of the project when I dive deeper into the engine build.

Do you have footage of the modified Discovery being driven..? Oh do you have to get an engineers certification on all your modifications prior to on road use?

Not yet with the 4BT installed but lots from before the V8 had issues here in this playlist (down near the bottom of the playlist there are some trips I recorded) kzbin.info/aero/PL0fo2S6vPzlHRu8oH5bXgUFSGmPkvubag And thankfully I don't need any certification for putting the 4BT Rover back on the road, at least in this state in the USA 👍

Twin turbo straight six, nice! I'm so excited to have the fine control & clean results from TIG. I need to upgrade the exhaust on my rally car, so I think that'll be my first TIG welding victim. But yeah we'll see how I do with it if I can fab some things for people anytime soon. Thankfully I have a friend who's quite good at it that I can bother for tips/tricks.

That hoody came from a fun event in Grand Rapids that was in John Ball park, but outgrew it & is now held at Riverside park (if you're in the area & interested). But aside from the huge one in Munich, from my understanding the big ones in the USA are there in Cincinnati & a close second in size out in La Crosse WI.
