Totally understand the rationale for going for a higher ratio gearbox - but did you know there are multiple ratios available for the LT230 transfer box? As standard, there were 1.667, 1.4, 1.2 and 1.003:1 ratios. As standard, your V8 Disco will have the 1.2:1 version. Those of us doing 5.9 Cummins conversions in the UK all use the 1:1.003 ratio transfer box, (parts for which you can get from Ashcroft Transmissions and a few other places in the UK), and then you get very decent cruising ability and maintain your off road ratios (since the low range part of the transfer box is the same in all versions.). Anyway absolutely love the fact that we're getting Land Rover & Cummins content on this channel so I'm not complaining in the slightest! Cheers from the UK!

285s are the perfect tire for that truck...I would build a suspension around 285s And oh yea...the R2.8 is 300, yes 300lbs LIGHTER than a 4BT...so you can actually have a suspension that flexes instead of needing springs so firm that it barely moves Going to be a SICK build
@uwharriebigfoothunter6 жыл бұрын
Yeah the r2.8 is way better for that vehicle than a 4bt. And no one really runs big tires on a Land Rover or Range Rover. Hell they ran all the camel trophy races on stock size tires. Plus they are really top heavy.. I dunno why people would say lift it more... but then again people seem to like 12" lifts on diesels running 40" tires on 26" wheels so...😒🤦♂️

285's??? what a 285/35r16? same size as a 265/75r16 which is what i have wish i went with skinnier 285 as you loose some steering lock. Going from 32's to 33's requires guard chop and then you might aswell change offset and run flares and on a 4 door means cutting into the rear door.

FYI The LT 230 came in 3 different ratios for the "High" gears. A 1.667 which is what is standard for MOD Defenders, a 1.4, and a 1.2. If you use the 1.2 the revs for a small diesel are great and keep the engine on the highway quite quiet and great economy. The killer part is that the "Low" range of the LT230 XFR case remains unchanged and is amazing off road.

Unfortunately it doesn’t work very well, if you try and use it while moving it makes some interesting noises and will tear out engine and gearbox mounts. Over here in the UK we use Xeng handbrakes which convert the drum brake to a disc break, they are awesome and well worth it if you can get them over there.

It also has the *hilarious* little side effect of, if you take the propshaft off without having the wheels chocked, you have no handbrake and the vehicle will probably just roll away if there's a bit of an incline. Did the same thing to my 96 D1 manual but used the 300TDI. Parts are no problem to find you just cant get them at autozone.
