~ PART#48 in a project dubbed "Nanuuq" to swap out my lifted Land Rover Discovery 2's blown 4.0L V8 & boring ZF auto for a Cummins 4BT 3.9L turbo (Holset Super HX30W) diesel 4-cylinder engine (Bosch P7100 pump) with an NV4500 5-speed manual transmission. The AWD 4x4 will remain with the LT230 transfer case divorced behind it all, & plenty of Dodge 6BT parts too. Another big phase of my custom DIY build to create a do-just-about-anything off-road / overland rig. Did I mention it's a camper too?

Almost looks like a road worthy vehicle now! But my tachometer wiring still needs tweaking, since I'm trying to steal an output signal from the old Rover alternator for my RPM reading. (I have a laser RPM detector now, just to be sure the reading is accurate once it's working) Next up is a road test to verify the speedometer, boost gauge, temp gauge, and exhaust gas temps... which if all good means I can turn up the boost and start tuning it!
@jamescunliffe9872
@jamescunliffe9872 3 жыл бұрын
As an experiment I think it's worth trying a longer exhaust to spin the turbo faster,as I see it the exhaust gas is exiting without producing enough flow to build a rise? Counter intuitive but you may also gain from having the end section actually having a slight narrowing taper!

I retro'd my Defender with the exact same gauges and had the same problem with the RPM gauge. Once you wire your signal from the alt, there are tiny microswitches on the back to set the gauge to different pulse rates from the alt. I played around with the settings until I got it right.
@Tinker1837
@Tinker1837 3 жыл бұрын
Ah good to know, figured it would just take a few settings here 'n there until I got it right. And I'm confident I can get it near enough to exact since I have a handheld laser/photo tachometer meter to double check.

Really, really nice job on the gauges and the project overall! I followed your build on 4BTswaps. I''m pulling together components for a 3/4 ton GMT800 6BT conversion. I have planning to use the GM AD244 alternator, but am having second thoughts. I'm now considering a 28SI. What alternator did you finally end up with? And what thermostat housing did you use? Thanks.
@Tinker1837
@Tinker1837 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'm using the original Rover alternator for now, but I'll likely go with a rewound diesel unit later down the road. I used the angled housing to make the custom radiator easier to fit.

@Tinker1837
@Tinker1837 2 жыл бұрын
I did yes, actually to clarify I ditched the ENTIRE electrical system. Went in there with bolt cutters, was surprisingly cathartic. I'm building my own bespoke system in it's place using a combination of motorsports + mil-spec + marine grade parts with breakers instead of fuses & solar etc. Big job but fun to decide where everything goes & how it works.

@@Tinker1837 I have always heard the differentials were weak on the rovers, the traction control helps spread the effort as to not grenade anything. Did you upgrade the gears and replace the differentials? Also were you able to keep the climate controls/lights/signals/power door locks/power windows functional?
@Tinker1837
@Tinker1837 2 жыл бұрын
I did not upgrade any gears, by some luck the ratio's worked out perfect with this engine/trans. They are in the range of 1/2-ton american axles, so not weak really, more the issue is cost in upgrades versus american axles like Dana60/Ford9 etc. Lights and signals I have rewired so they work, and no climate control will be custom as well.
