I started prepping early 2021 and I feel like we’re in good shape. We’ve had water and power outages for various reasons. The neighbor was driving to next town for water and offered to get me some. No thanks we’re good. That was so comforting. I did empty all our potable water storage for flushing and washing hands, and I need to refill those. I also have water barrels for flushing.

For toilet water, we saved vinegar & bleach jugs. That deals with 2-3 days. For longer, a medical potty chair. 5-gall bucket will do the job, but is not stable.

@@scrapzwtf. I swap out my stored tap water jugs yearly. I pour a couple jugs of the “old” water into the washer each wash since I already paid for the water and it doesn’t go to waste. I have other cases of bottled drinking water that I use daily and replenish.

@@angelal6700 I plan to use my downstairs toilet only with a bucket of water for flushing. We can use any waste water from washing in it plus I have a couple of outside water buts. Stored drinking water is separate plus I keep some water purification tablets and filters in stock.

I am not stopping picking things up, but I am pretty well stocked, since I have been at it for more than 3 years. Watching 'panic buying' during the Cuban Missle crisis showed how bad things were then, but people were taking turns, waiting in line and checking out with no problems. We see what happens at "Black Friday" sales, what kind of craziness will happen these days? It won't even be safe to go out to the stores if all heck breaks loose, or only threatens to.

Even if it’s cold but sunny you can put your canned food on you dashboard of your car. Microwaves were invented after I worked in a sewing factory and the owners only bought one to be used by over 100 people at lunch time. Putting it on the dashboard of your car will leave you with not only a hot meal but a satisfying one

@zippy2641
@zippy2641 11 ай бұрын
While having cash on hand is important...you should already have both gas in your car, and food stored. With power out, you may not be able to purchase gas or food regardless of how much cash you have. Gas pumps and cash registers run on electricity.

Keep only small bills ($1 or $5) at home. Another commenter said that if a seller was selling $10 items and you only have $20 bills, then the item will cost you $20 because the seller will not likely have change on hand during a crisis.

@@lyndarina9839 I (like many others) keep enough cash "near-by" to cover at least 3 months worth of bills/expenses. Bank collapse is a real thing...especially these days. Keeping a supply of storage bags to use as mini trash bags or to hold unused food product or to hold small things so they won't get misplaced or lost. They're also useful for keeping things dry in the event of a water emergency(keeping matches dry, for example). I also use them to keep my safe box items dry in case the boxes get dropped or to keep things from getting scattered or lost(, important documents, jewelry and irreplaceable photos, for example).

Part of my preps include ways my household members and I can entertain ourselves if the grid goes down and we have to shelter in place. So, we have an assortment of real paper page fiction and nonfiction books, coloring books and art supplies, jigsaw puzzles, leather working kits, needlecraft and sewing supplies and some grid-down ways of playing our collection of music CDs and DVDs of movies and vintage TV shows. And we could listen to local FM radio stations if they are still broadcasting. I do worry that some of my household members may have difficulty coping with not having constant contact with the internet and text messaging, if the local cell phone towers stop working and the power grid goes down. Boredom could be a real issue for those of us who are used to spending a lot of our time using modern communication technology when that is suddenly not available for days or weeks.

I canned tomatoes, now working on meat. I think I will be ok. I won't give away my jars but will make a few emergency bags using my canned (from the store) vegetables and meat.

We make the sauce and can it then process in the freeze drier as space allows. That way we have a continual flow of fresh to canned to freeze dried and longest term storage.

You can use butane and propane indoors. Don't use a camp stove that requires white gas like an old Coleman camp stove.

There are many off grid cooking methods. Ventilation is the key to avoid carbon monoxide issues. You can always set it up by a partially open window or door. Catering fuel cans and Tea light candles with disposable pans and metal baking racks is another cooking set up that does not require electricity. USB powered appliances and Solar charged power banks are one option. Those are some of the options that I have supplies to use indoors. I have other options for cooking outside.

Nancy's right about what Gases to use. Plus you could crack a door or window open at a push, & if you don't have those you can use Candles to warm up tinned foods. Some foods like Rice or Pasta can be soaked for roughly 2 hours in room temp Water, & be cooked in 10 minutes on a Candles flame.👍🔥

If you use paper plates and bowls, and wooden cutlery, they can be used to start a fire after use, rather than building up trash.
