Lesson learned. Keep the fuel tank(s) near-full. Carry two full Jerry cans. Keep fuel filters clean and fit the transparent filters where you can see the fuel quality. Try to stay upwind on a weather shore if you can. I know that region of the Corran Narrows. I would not leave your ship unattended there in 60 ft at anchor. Send one man ashore for the fuel, not the entire crew. If she drags, you will always have a man on board. Fair winds.

.... got me thinking ..... would it work to have a setup for situations like this where one could use a jerry can or something else with a smaller diameter to feed right into the engine fuel supply line with a valve to select which line feeds the engine ... maybe have it so the jerry can would act like a day tank works on some boats ..... some fantastic scenery you showed while traversing the canal .... thx for the share .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....

Thanks for filming while it all went down and sharing what can happen out there. Not an easy task. So glad the conditions & location were in your favour. You where very lucky, around Scotland weather changes so quickly. I was out in the Forth fishing wind picked, started blowing about 30 knots. Not forecast in a little 12 foot boat with a small seagull engine. Blew us half way a cross the Forth look up after getting wets on 100 yards of one of the islands. I was very lucky also.

Never let a diesel get below 1/4 tank, 1/2 is better. Always carry at least 1/2 spare. Being calmed, with no engine can be a real problem, inshore or not. You people are fortunate, pray it holds.

If you find yourself in the kittie litter again around the UK coastline tell the HM Coastguard on VHF 16 or better still the red button (DSC distress) then voice call on CH 16. They will coordinate any help you may need up to and including an RNLI lifeboat and Coastguard helicopters. Believe it or not all free of charge. I don't know exactly where all this went south but there is an RNLI station in Islay and Oban. If they come to you it's nonjudgemental they accept Sh*t happens it also doesn't matter what flag your vessel is. It's not a bad idea to find out which coastguard area you are in believe it or not where you were you would be talking to MRCC Belfast Coastguard (Bangor) in Northern Ireland. The signal from your VHF radio gets amplified and bounced around the UK via repeater towers dotted around the country. As far as getting help if you are in trouble on the water around the UK you are probably in the safest places in the world but only if you call them and tell them what's wrong. In your situation, I am in absolutely no doubt Belfast Coastguard would have launched the nearest lifeboat to assist you 24/7.

Thats not stress.......Wait till you run aground on a reef, or the boat starts to sink, or you get hit by lightning without a ground, or you are boarded by pirates, or someone falls overboard at night while you are drunk, or an Orca starts chewing on your rudder, or some stupid motorboat broadside you, or a big fire breaks out in the galley.........That's enough for now.
