Hi Geek Family... this pitched battle was the largest ever fought in the 18th century with the greatest number of casualties on a single day and with the widest assortment of both traditional swords and as well as pistols, muskets and artillery of the era. However you will not find it mentioned in Western history books mostly authored by the British for obvious reasons. The importance of this battle can be gauged by the fact that it was responsible for the military decline of the Marathas paving the way for the British to slowly occupy the country without an effective opposition. Lord Arthur Wellesley famous for defeating Napolean Bonaparte in Waterloo in 1815 deployed his artillery using Maratha tactics employed in this war. Also called the Duke of Wellington, Lord Arthur Wellesley later became Prime Minister of England and said in the British Parliament that had the Marathas won that day on January 14th, 1761 the British could never have colonized India. About 45000 Marathas and 30000 Afghans and their allies lost their lives. The battle raged for 9 hours out of which the Marathas had the ascendancy for 7 hours and lost the battle due to jealousy and infighting among the various Maratha generals as well as Sadashiv Rao coming down from his elephant without informing anyone. Most of the Maratha military and civilian casualties were after the defeat and most of the Afghan casualties was at the hands of the Maratha artillery and musket men manned by the great Ibrahim Khan Gardi.

Durrani Empire had fielded more troops than the Maratha Empire, that material you read was great except for this aspect. They had over 30,000 more troops and a contingent of Afghans who attacked Marathas from within.

Also, the fact they were starved and thirsty at the same time shows that even the basic combat on the field was out of pure martial discipline and valour, so other blunders rectified would have only guaranteed a victory while this basic factor is what sealed their defeat. Also the long range French Guns of Marathas turned out to be all decoys and did not function during the battle, due to which the entire strategy went kaput.

This is based on the Third Battle of Panipat between Sadashivarao Bhau, the general of Balaji Bajirao Peshwa and Ahmad Shah Abdali of Afghanistan. There were several years of peace between the Mughals and Marathas, but mostly because the Marathas were the superior power in the Indian subcontinent at the time. The Mughals invited Abdali to maintain their own control over Delhi, which they feared they would lose. "Peshwa" was a title given by the Maratha King to his prime minister.

Two local muslim chiefs supported him.Marathas had no allies.Also the marathas had 2 lakh camp followers.Lack of strong reserves and mobile artillery was the reason for maratha defeat.40 thousand maratha soldiers lost their lives on the day of the battle.The next day Afghans beheaded 60 thousand camp followers.

I don't know where Nathan was reading the history from but it was so inaccurate. Written accounts of that time clearly state that Ahmed Shah Abdali (Durrani Empire from Afghanistan) came into what is today India (crossing what is today Pakistan) with an army of 100,000. In contrast the strength of the Maratha army was only 40,000. The main reason the Marathas lost the war was not because their army was less in numbers but because every other kingdom of India were envious of them and all of them betrayed the Marathas. The Marathas were fighting on each and every front you can think of (south, north-east, west and the north-west). This is recorded history. As is rightly pointed out by the producer of the movie in one of his interviews, the Marathas under the Peshwas had nothing to lose if they had not faced off against Ahmed Shah in the far north-west. They already had the entire India under their rule including Delhi. The only reason they faced off against Abdali in Panipat (which was 1000 miles away from their capital in Pune) was their extreme love for their motherland. I am a proud Maratha from Pune and I know my history from family lore as much as I know it from records. Our families learnt a bitter lesson after the battle of Panipat, a thorn in our hearts were are carrying since then - that there are no true friends in this world ! I am sorry it is pessimistic but it is true.

The movie did say the numbers correctly then I guess in one dialogue(40k vs 1L)...hope that the movie maintains accuracy further too cause it would be good to actually watch something we all read about in school.

@@djsoh6041 I hope so but it was not much....I remember having very less Content regarding the Panipat wars.... unfortunately using internet by kids here wasn't as common around 10 years back as it's now🤔.... Personally I would have liked studying more about this matter (had only a page or 2 ) than around 10 pages of French, Russian, Italian etc revolutions which were given in great details in our texts. Honestly there was more about Boston tea party than Panipat wars which is hopefully rectified in modern syllabus ☹️. I really liked World history a lot but we shouldn't have to wait for an Arjun Kapoor movie to learn in detail about our own history😑.

@@VS-ls2mi I think people who draft the syllabus have to strike a balance between contemporary and cultural relevance. What is more important from my point of view is the truth. Whatever they intend to include in the syllabus should be as close to truth as possible. I would take the example of the Indo-China war. We in India have been taught and brought to believe that China was the sole aggressor looking for a casus belli to dominate over India. But, without going deeper into the details, suffice to say that the truth lies elsewhere. After all what is history? It is the dead past that we can learn from. There is no greater redemption than avoiding committing the same mistakes from the past.

Arrival of the news that Marathas had organised another 100,000 men in the south to avenge their loss and rescue captured prisoners, Though Abdali won the battle, he also had heavy casualties on his side and sought peace with the Marathas. He also sent a letter to NANA SAHIB PESHWA, pleading mercy. ABDALI wrote- There is no reason to have animosity amongst us. Your son Vishwasrao and your brother Sadashivrao died in battle, was unfortunate. Bhau started the battle, so I had to fight back unwillingly. Yet I feel sorry for his death. Please continue your guardianship of Delhi as before, to that I have no opposition. Only let Punjab until Sutlaj remain with us. Reinstate Shah Alam on Delhi's throne as you did before and let there be peace and friendship between us, this is my ardent desire. Grant me that desire. MARATHAS remained the predominant military power in India and managed to retake Delhi 10 years later. REASONS FOR MARATHA DEFEAT- Durrani had both numeric as well as qualitative superiority over Marathas. The combined Afghan army was much larger than that of Marathas. None of the other Hindu Kings joined forces to fight Abdali. Allies of Abdali, namely, Najib, Shuja and the Rohillas knew North India very well. In 1771 battle where the forces of Mahadji Shinde captured Delhi and the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II was restored to the throne. Marathas capture Delhi by defeating Afghans under Najib khan. With this battle they regained there lost supremacy in North India after the Third Battle of Panipat and conquered much of the lost territories which they lost after the Third Battle of Panipat.
