things that aren't talked about in vertical videos: when you show something with your arms and the video shoes only your head .....

I agree. The more I mix the less I use extreme panning. Generally, no more than 70% out for me. I like Andy Wallace’s idea of everything sitting like a tight locomotive ball coming out from the center. Nice and compact but still airy if the sides are done right. One added benefit is having a much easier time when switching to mono. ☑️

Great advice sir Warren! Absolutely, get strategic! Pan for purpose and even better automate panning to move bigger when it's needed and moving then strategically! You Rock my friend!

I always mix drums in mono like a solid core, a middle leading the band. My philosophy is to think in the way that ''the drums lead the rythm and live needs to be heard from the other members''.

Old Aerosmith is a great example. If you play any of their first 4 albums and only listen to R or L you'll hear different instruments. One guitar is hard left and one guitar is hard right and the vocals are slightly different R or L. More harmonies on the right and more lead vocal on the left.

Why did they change that formula?
@jakelecroy55534 ай бұрын
@@jmp01a24 I think they still use it but I don't think it's to the old school extreme like AC/DC Shoot to thrill where Angus opens mostly right with a barely audible left then Malcolm comes in hard left or Van Halen Running with the devil where Eddie's guitar is panned hard left and the reverb is to the right , in stereo it's phenomenal. An audio engineer put it very well to me years ago - you set the stage for the performance Left, Right, center, Front and back using panning, reverb (or lack there of) and gain - separating the instruments in the stereo field. Sorry so long, wired up and overslept.

Perhaps this is also something to consider with overhead mic placement

So … kick and snare should always live in the center. But … could the bass guitar live 20% to the left, and the piano 20-40% to the right? I like the idea of “setting the stage,” as opposed to “staging the set.”

The other trick is record the instrument/cabinet in the room where it will sit in the mix.. get your perspectives sorted early on.

I have a crook ear following a viral infection. Lost above 6.5K in the cochlea so no hearing aid can fix. I mix everything in mono and panning is the absolute last thing I will do.

I think it was Bobby Owinski who coined the term “Big Mono”.
