Panopticon - The Singing Ringing Tree

The Singing Ringing Tree is a musical sculpture situated at Crown Point above the town of Burnley, Lancashire, United Kingdom. It is one of a series of "Panopticons" in the Lancashire Pennine Hills. It was created by artists Mike Tonkin and Anna Liu and completed in 2006. This video is primarily intended to give an impression of the sounds created by the wind interacting with the sculpture.

I do like it, the natural wind sounding somehow supernatural. It may trigger someone with schizoid tendencies, but it could also inspire all manner of creative endeavors. A smaller household version, hidden in the backyard, would definitely deter burglars. It sounds like Judgement Day.

Imagination is a wonderful thing. If you have real imagination you will have known what this would sound like. The angles to the wind make different notes, and the angles within the angles (because of the overhangs) make for swirls of the wind that makes for different sounds again. It's not a pleasant sound but it is impressive. It's chaos. It is real.
