I never like it but in 1995 i went to Trinidad for the Carnival and since that they i have a BIG respect for steel pan ,but listening it live i was asking my self how are the judges judging because for me all of them are Good

@AllisonMarquis, how exactly do you measure how much chromaticism to use, and can you also overuse harmony, motivic development and melodic development, because they are all legitimate musical devices?

Psychologistpannist- Chromaticism is based on the chromatic scale. This scale was clearly overused. I feel that more use of the musical devices that you mentioned would have made for a better arrangement. The band is no doubt one of the best steel bands in the world and the arranger has put down several very good arrangements too. The key to a good arrangement is balance and economy. My opinion.

This is a great steelband. However, what they played is for a music festival---the essence of Panorama is musicality combined with sweetness. Could you imagine playing this piece on the road? It would not work. This is not the band's fault. The calypsonians are just not producing steelband music like Kitch or Sparrow used to.
