Today I take out my Fujifilm GX617 panoramic film camera with some Kodak Portra 160 and Fuji Velvia 50. I have not had much luck with this camera in the past, but today I finally feel like this camera and I are starting to get along. We shoot some beautiful sunrise photography at my local beach and try our best to avoid any people getting in the frame... and it is a big frame!

I haven’t done any film photography for a while so check this, but remember that in colour films the reciprocity effect also affects colour balance, leading to a colour cast over the resulting image. To counter this, colour film manufacturers published colour correction factors for long exposure to tell you which colour correction filter is required.

Thomas - the image at the 7-min mark is beautiful. The composition and the light are just perfect. By contrast, the colourful shot into the rising sun is, as you said, a bit obvious - and I avoid these myself for the same reason. The last image is lovely, but the earlier one is still the best. Holy shit - I just watched the last bit of your video, and I felt my own balls shrivel in fright!!! Wow - you're a man of your word! Pisser!!

Thomas Heaton film instructions: 1- Click on like button and subscribe 2- Get comfortable, beverages optional ! 3- Relax and watch film, take inspiration and look forward to future content. Simple really. Cheers Tom. PS Nice gloves. The last photo is my favourite, perfect light on the white lighthouse, not always easy, you've done a great job balancing the exposure. Great job. Happy swimming.

I love the last shot. You nailed both the exposure and the composition. I love the foreground and the white lighthouse in the distance. The colors are amazing. They are both warm and cool, if that makes sense. The sunlight on the rocks are warm and the colors in the water and sky are cool. Makes for a nice balance.

Tom, you are so polite so never worry about asking folk to walk behind you! I remember one of your very earliest videos when you said you hated talking in front of folk, you are a natural so just jabber away and ignore them! Props for taking a dip, the North Sea in March must be bloody freezing lol. Oh and the last image is a stunner.

O TREMENDOUS! This was a thrilling adventure, you made it so much fun. Surprisingly, I found the shot into the sunrise the one that most surprised me and enjoyable. There was just “something” about the combination and spread of the rocks “floating” in the water that was unexpected, I liked the healthy proliferation of them, and most photographers would have chosen a much more winnowed down challenge. BIG LAUGH at the end, I mean BIGGG LAUGH!!!

Whoa, wonderful episode. You steadily move photography back (or shall I say: forward?) to where it can be: ART ! I say "can be" because there is no need to make photograph a piece of art every time and there are plenty good reasons for most people not to try. But you deliberately picked the form of photography with the highest possible demands on craftmanship: all manual, analog, limited resources (no. of images per film, but also dynamic range is a limited resource!) and almost blind in composition (at least regarding grad. filters). That is art to me. And finally you wrap that hard work into an entertaining and even funny (holy cow, that last scene...) episode, which I find to be a form of art on itself. My compliments and a massive thanks for sharing. For sure one of the very few GEMs on YT 🍀🌈🙂👍📷

Velvia has an incredible ability to pull colour and richness out of a scene like nothing else. Beautiful. Portra long exposures should be fine.. the problem came, I think.. because of the overexposure.

I have shot film a few times maybe thirty years ago before digital was a thing, which is why i gave photography up back then as it was just so so difficult to teach yourself , i am enjoying watching your journey with film and how you approach it, that last image, sadly for you, came out really well hope you are over the hyperthermia that surely must have followed . I also find it difficult to talk on camera in front of people , just so self conscious. I also admire your outlook when members of the public are also enjoying the landscape. I dont comment very often but watch all your videos and really enjoy them and find them a great source of personal inspiration , so thankyou .

Man that looked cold. I lived in Tasmania for 20 years and surfed all year round at many different beaches. I will always remember going out surfing when there was snow on the sand, being a mainlander, I could only last about 30-45 minutes before I'd have to go in, the locals would stay out for a couple of hours. They breed them tough in Tasmania.

Well done!! I hope you enjoyed your swim. I’m glad to see you persevering with the pesky Fuji. Your time learning will be very well spent. I think you could afford to be less frugal with your actual film usage. You’ve taken the time to get there, set up, select an image and calculate a suitable exposure. So shoot more. Bracket your images, certainly with the Velvia. The main thing about the Fuji is that it slows the photographer down, gives more time to tweak the image and more time to enjoy the whole photographic process. Anyway, I enjoyed the video and loved your last image.

I couldn't agree more on the distaste of asking people to avoid my camera. Just this weekend I was setup for a long exposure shot and a lady with kids were nearby, the kids were playing and having a great time, but working their way closer and closer to me. Finally the little girl was almost in front of my camera, but I was using my 70-200 and by leaning down and eyeballing the situation I could see she would not get in the shot. So I let her go without a word. In the end she did not get in my shot and we were all happy. Maybe someday I'll get the courage (if that's what it is) to say something, LOL! Great images and videos like this take me back to my film days: Love it!!
