Imagine driving down the road, and that thing suddenly hit the "wobbly" phase of the all wheel steering! And then the wheel covers that were not properly latched flapped open... Loved the engineering diagrams, excellent depiction of the drivers.

I subscribed for the Swedish Chef; I've stuck around because... Well, I wouldn't have LEFT unless ya'll had been actively unpleasant AND inaccurate. How could I possibly leave when the information AND humor is at such a high level? Keep on keepin' on, Swedes; the Chieftain may bring you views, but you earn them on your own merits!

Thanks for this excellent video. I really enjoy the work you are doing. It is really impressive to learn how Sweden had its own tank / armored car program and how it managed to find solutions to its particular issues, like snow, etc... It makes for such unique and iconic vehicules. Looking forward to see these vehicules for real after the pandemic is gone.

Trying to aim at aircraft with an MG mounted in that roof hatch seems... optimistic at best. Love Swedish combat vehicles (and aircraft, and warships come to think of it) for always pushing technology.

Well its worth remembering how slow early planes were, and how low an elevation they attacked at, but yeah, i doubt it would have shot down many... But then, that's the same for pintle mounted .50s of WW2, they're not there primarily to destroy attacking planes but to dissuade them and make them attack from a longer range.
@DaReaperZ
@DaReaperZ Жыл бұрын
I think hitting a biplane would be entirely possible. Although I think it would be better at simply scaring a potential attacking plane away if you have 3-4 of these guys all firing at you, you don't want to dive towards them!

With the headlight and wide base, my first idea was: oh, this seems one of those polish tankette that may travel on railroads, too. A mini armored train. A missed opportunity to over-engeneer it another notch, I guess.

@Arvid Williamsson You're referring to Stridsvagn fm/31 I take it? :-) Other than that and this armored car I can't really think of other examples that went into production. A few would probably have been called over-engineered if they hadn't worked as well as they did, like some of the fighters and the Strv. 103 maybe. Maybe I'm blanking right now but in my mind Sweden is known for it's "high-tech within the bounds of reason" mentality, like with the Bofors 40mm, the various jet-fighters, the CV-90. Things that are cutting-edge but still just work.

Just looking at the front bumper assembly. It would work to clear fallen trees and other light obstacles from the road when driving and when 2 fixed length cables are hooked around the hooks on the bumper supports are pulled back to latch onto Hull fittings, it would allow a better front approach angle and clearance for cross country work but still provide bumper protection to the vehicle.

Check out small agricultural tractors. Old, long, and "thin" ...somehow. No steering wheel, just long flat bars kinda motorcycle-ish type.
@JH-lo9ut
@JH-lo9ut 2 жыл бұрын
This kind of steering is still seen on some agricultural tractors/wheel loaders. (sorry, I'm not sure what the English term for this type of veichle is) they are often used for snow plowing and road preparation. They look not unsimilair to the picture of the artillery tractor in this video. Summers in Sweden can get hot enough. Today, July 3, it's 25 degrees centigrade outside (77F), wich certainly is enough to turn a normal car in to an oven if you park it in the sun. This would be considered a hot summer day, but nothing extraordinary.

The vision "slits" are very interesting on this vehicle, never seen anything like that with the row of small holes. At first I didn't realize what they were supposed to be, but they were exactly in the positions where visions slits normally would be, so that's what they have to be. I wonder how effective they are...
@stefankarlsson9762
@stefankarlsson9762 3 жыл бұрын
They are very effective when you come close enough with your eyes. Punch a few holes in a piece of paper and try, far better than you would imagine.

@@stefankarlsson9762 Thank you very much for the answer Stefan! That makes sense, I guess it's just about the same as the normal visions slits, that tiny amount of steel likely doesn't make a difference. After this comment I noticed that the pansarbil m31 uses the same type as well. Just another unique thing in the Swedish armored vehicles. Thank you for everything you and others at the museum do for us international viewers!

I'm going to guess that the front bars are a sort of "suspension" and hold down for the bumper. Should the front end dig in and get stuck, say when crossing a mound, you could back the vehicle up and the bumper would swing up and allow the vehicle to pull free, then spring back into position once free.
@simonhumby323
@simonhumby323 3 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same - or perhaps the bumper could be raised to increase ground clearance? I suspect its a mystery because they found it didn't work and took bits off/fixed it in place so clues are missing as to how it worked.
