This live performance was from a concert at Tushino Airfield in Moscow, where Pantera, Metallica, AC/DC, The Black Crowes and E.S.T (russian band) were the first western bands to be invited as the Soviet Union fell. The size of the crowd was an insanely large 1.6 million!

I was present at this concert at age 16. This crowd was there mostly for Metallica and AC/DC, not for Pantera. Actually for me it was first time ever listening to the band not only at live setting, but in general. I heard the name, but had no clue what they play. Guys, the sound you get in this clip is far more superior then the one we had for real. The quality of Sound on warm-ip bands was not top notch. And Pantera at that time was a "warm-up" band (at least in Russia that year)..... And when Metallica hit the stage the Sound became waaaaaay more loud, crisp, clear and e.t.c. I want to thank people who worked on Pantera video - because at least later I can now appreciate their performance. It was not really possible at the moment they played.

@@vinograd74 Ive been waiting for someone that was there to chime in. I figured surely at least one of those folks will show up eventually! Ive been to huge shows that were fun to be at, but between dealing with the crowd, moshing and everything else going on....the fun was being there...not the sound quality. Ive a friend I used to play bass for long ago that still plays. Over the last few years, hes gotten a lot of gigs around town, but I honestly cant stand going to his shows, because the way he sets the sound, and the volume he plays at is just too much. Just about every show I go to, people show up when he starts, but it gets so loud, they leave. Its a shame, hes written and plays music that he could get a lot further with if he wasnt running off listeners. Thats his thing though.

@@mayadog2497 I agree that open-air gigantic live shows are not focused on a high quality sound, sure! All I tried to say is that when you witness a NEW band (even if it`s Pantera in this case) - there is no chance to start liking them with a poor sound where its more noise then music.

@@vinograd74Even America didn’t know Pantera too well yet. Cowboys from Hell had just released the prior year and they had a big cult following at this point. They weren’t a big name yet, though. That came the following year when Vulger display of Power was released. That’s really cool that you were at the show, though! Knowing you were at one of the most iconic concerts in history is pretty awesome!

My biggest live show regret is not catching Pantera when I was a teen. They are insane. I do think, in scenarios like this, where it’s right before a band explodes, visuals shouldn’t be taken much into account, as lack of funding, and being on early affect that negatively, at no fault of the band.

At the time, Dimebag Darrell commented that Pantera did not want to stop recording the album "Vulgar Display of Power", but for that show they would do whatever was necessary

I was afraid of your reaction cause as a fan calling pantera my fav band it’s my fav track … because of this performance! Never watched a video more often than this! And I am upset when people don’t appreciate this special, holy version of domination. Cause in my understanding of music: even if you don’t like metal you have to be ignorant not to see what’s happening on this stage! It ridiculously outstanding fabulously great in every dimension of music and performance

This is a proper classic banger I'm of the age where I clearly remember when this Festival went down I had been playing drums for 5-6 yrs so I was already playing heavy weird stuff like Voivod and early AIC Imo Vinny Paul's drumming impacted metal drumming in the 90's like Lars did in the 80's like him or not haha This is Pantera at their purest moving away from the 80's influenced stuff to what became groove metal The band had already recorded VULGAR at this point and we're sitting in it and we're asked to do this gig RIP DIME AND BIG VINN 🤘🤘

So this was Sept 28th of 1991. Vulgar display came out feb 25th of 92. So they probably just got done laying tracks and sent it out to get mastered.

I'm fairly certain my friends and I have brain damage from headbanging so hard in the car to this mid section in high school. I was at The Rainbow on the Sunset Strip with my Uncle Roger Romeo (Legs Diamond guitarist/singer) and accidentally ran into Vinnie coming out of the bathroom (literally) A lot of celebrities and rock stars hang out there but I was still in shock. "Vinnie?" "Yeah man" "Thank you for the music." This was not long after Dime was killed and I didn't have the heart to ask for an autograph, I could see the pain in his eyes, that wasn't the time. 🤘🏼

I was so stoked to see this reaction. I’ve watched this many times on their Vulgar Video VHS tape and KZbin reactions. It’s so epic. I believe it’s Tushino Airfield in Moscow that this was shot at. Estimates varies at the attendance, but this was after communism fell and it was a last minute addition to the MOR tour in ‘91 with AC/DC and Metallica. It’s actually the last tour Metallica supported anyone (except the Stones, a few years ago) Boris Yeltsin is supposed to have arranged this for the youth of Russia to thank them for his rise to power and communism’s end. If you look closely at Dime’s guitar, you’ll see the (very small) heads of KISS on it. Agreed David, VDOP is my personal favorite, followed by CFH. I had the honor of seeing them live in ‘96. Great show.

The band 100% gave it their all. No extra production value though, even in the daylight. I'd limit my score in the 8s just for that reason. When everyone comes at me I turn to Band Maid's Domination. Apples:Oranges... but still, that was a 9.2 or 9.3 and beats or meets this one on every scale

The only thing that annoys me significantly about panteras live performances is phil anselmo started after 1992 not singing his songs probably adding grit to a lot more songs and changing the words alot. He couldn't do any of the cowboys from hell shit in 1994! Unless it was domination but still he decides to shout it instead
