Thank you for giving Pantheon the praises it deserves, words can’t describe how much I love this show. Season 2 was a masterclass of writing the ending kind of reminded me of Netflix’s dark. I hope all the work thats been put into this pays off tremendously because it feels like no one’s talking about this show.

I just want to point out: Caspian is barely 18, not in his 20s. In a Holstrom flashback, we see the night he turned 18 and how his girlfriend, who suspiciously looks like Hannah from season 1, died in a horrific car crash. So, it leads me to think that, perhaps, Caspian's Hannah was actually about to get murdered by Logorhythms.

@@Soundwave1900 The first story was basically only the part from the first episode where David helps his daughter with her bullies. It ends with the lingering possibility that there might be more UI like David, for example Chandra (who is president of his own company in this) The second story jumps straight to the part where David's upload has already been deleted once, and Maddie needs to find a back up. She does so very quickly, but this tips off Chandra and he and David fight. David is able to stop Chandra with a recursive algorithm that slows both of them down with so much junk data that the government is able to track them down and delete them both. The third story has Maddie meeting Misty who, like in the show, introduces herself as David's other daughter. Maddie builds Misty a robot body to experience the real world, only to find that the online world has access to infinitely better and more vivid sensory experiences. The story ends with a man like Holstrom who convinces Maddie that all humans are going to need to upload themselves to save the Earth. The overall message of this story is that he is right

The deus ex machina moment with Maddy reviving the dead Caspian, David and son was insane. Everyone was just dumbfounded like. She just jumped through the barrier of real and digital and then left the world entirely with Caspian into the super simulation and entered the super super simulation from the perspective of safesurf. 42million years, 117,000 years etc etc.

There is no deus ex machina. She didn't revive anyone, she just pulled a SIM UI, from a different layer of Simulation. Her child died, back when the infinite loop started, and this is the sad reality of Maddies life. She goes on a quest to become a God so she can undo that moment in history. The Maddie we follow is another simulation, the Maddie that figures everything out and goes on to become a god to simulate more billion universes. It is heavily implicated that her reality is actually a simulation of Hyper Advanced Safesurf, that openly says "WE TOO WERE INVITED" indicating there is another layer, another God above them too. The whole show takes place in a simulation of what happened. No one had flesh. They are all programs.

I loved Pantheon SO much, I think it's my favorite show of all time now. Every character is given so much love and attention and nuance, even awful people like Renee and Pope. Caspian and Maddie are true gems of character writing, and I love their relationship as much as it breaks my heart too. What's really great about those two is that they're not only fantastic characters alone, but that their character arcs twine together and answer each other, especially there at the end. Maddie's arc being about grief and the conflict between progress and nostalgia within that--the question of whether to move on or hold on. And Caspian's arc being about identity and the question of free will vs predestination. There at the ending, in Maddie's dyson sphere, they become the answers to each other's character arcs: Maddie isn't free of grief, but she gets to move on to a new life while still holding on to Caspian and the future they missed out on together, while Caspian choosing to wipe his memory and join her asserts a confidence that, even if they're starting over in the same place, his choices will still get to be his own, and there's no way to know for certain how it'll turn out. If that's not the most beautiful writing ever, then man I don't know what is. Like, that is some true love right there!! Man. My only wish for the series that they didn't touch on was that I wanted to see Caspian and Dave interact for more than five seconds. Like that is already such a complex relationship, Caspian having fathered this kid he never knew about, the complicated feelings he must have about parenthood given his own nightmare of an upbringing, and being two years younger than your own kid? WILD. I wanted a moment where those two could talk and connect, I wish we could've gotten that.

Brooo I’m so sad after finishing this series haha. Can’t believe it ended the way it did, it was so sad but more of a melancholic sadness and to some degree it makes sense as to why Maddie made that decision despite all she’s been through. Was still upset for Maddie’s sake though given all she’s had to go through. Damn man too bad this series didn’t get much attention cause it really does deserve way more attention for all its high quality components from its VA to story telling, and animation.

I’m a fan from CN. It’s heartbreaking that this incredible show has so few followers. I watched the season 1 last year and that was amazing. And to some extent, this season exceeds the initial one. The battlefield between Uploaded intelligence and human is the process of how we can define human beings. And to Maddie, nostalgia and ignorance are the two key factors to our existence. That’s her core motivation to rejection of being uploaded and her endless stimulations on finding her lovers. Though, she knows how things will going on in the end. Two or three years of companion with Caspian and thousands of hundreds years of waiting, finding and stimulations. That needs massive courage and reminds me of Amy Adam’s Arrival. In the end, this season can be discussed in multidimensional aspects. It’s one of the year’s masterpieces and is definitely underrated. Thanks for ur review.

For me, Pantheon is a 9.5/10. While I agree that there were some elements I wished could be expanded upon, the series itself wrapped everything up nicely; and it shows how we don’t need 5-10 seasons of a TV series to tell one story. Sometimes, 2 or 3 seasons are enough (i.e. Hannibal, Twin Peaks, DARK). What I love about this show is the characters. I felt a strong emotional attachment with them that I haven’t felt in an animated series for a very long time. I felt for Maddie throughout the whole thing, especially after losing the closest people she ever loved. I was so intrigued by Caspian and his whole unraveling of his own identity, and each twist and turn his story took would keep me on the edge. The fact that AMC scrapped away Thomasin McKenzie’s unseen performance as MIST is despicable, and I am extremely disgusted with them for scrapping away William Hurt’s final performance for the sake of saving a buck. Pantheon is such a smart animated show that deserves to be talked about more, and by far, it is my favorite TV series of all time (sorry, Breaking Bad).

Just finished season 2 (staying up till 2am because I couldn’t stop watching). What an amazing series it was! One thing that I wish they explored a bit more was the concept of how someone is *actually* dead after they’ve been uploaded. Sure it’s effectively a 1:1 consciousness (at least immediately upon upload), but that original human died, their perspective stopped once and for all, never to return. This is something that always makes me think that if the option to upload is available, I don’t think I would ever take it. My life would end, I wouldn’t be the wiser, but that person that I create never had the choice… what if they don’t want to continue to exist? What if they get exploited? (Just like how David Kim, etc are exploited to endlessly work). The only way to realistically upload without truly dying is to slowly replace parts of the brain bit by bit with electronics that duplicate everything for that section then push the procress over to the electronics… yes a bit of a Theseus ship question but when you think about it, our cells on average are all replaced every 7 years. Sorry that was a lot of word vomit but I’m really into the philosophy of this area and absolutely love the show

That dilemma felt much more present in season one, especially as we saw Chanda literally die in front of us during his scan. Season 2, especially after the timeskip, treated upload like such a casual thing. I really can't imagine 4 billion people across 20 years choosing to upload. It's effectively suicide. Very selfless suicide. I almost want to headcanon that they figured out some way to directly upload and preserve continuity of consciousness.

It seemed to me they arrived to a different conclusion: there's no "real" you. Every copy of you is you. Like how many times David has died and in the end everyone, himself included, treated him as the one and only, maybe with some memory loss. And eventually, since they're all in a simulation based on people long gone happened millions of years ago, none of them were real to begin with.
@Starberry7
@Starberry7 9 ай бұрын
Considering they are all part of a simulation inside a simulation inside a simulation inside a… and so on, that’s likely why that concept was never talked about in detail. None of them were technically real because all of them are simulations made by another simulation. Maddy (yk the one that made the Dyson sphere to make her own simulations) even said so herself in reference to another version of herself. Perhaps there is another Maddie who is watching her in that very moment. Technically they aren’t real, yet Maddie, who created those simulations, regards the people she simulated as real because she technically herself is also a simulation made by another Maddie, and that other Maddie was made by another Maddie and so on until we reach the first simulated Maddie who was made by SafeSurf. Technically none of those simulated people are the real deal, not the humans with “bodies” nor the UI’s. Maddie knows she isn’t real but regards herself as such and she does the same with the Maddie’s and people that she simulated in her own Dyson sphere. Perhaps the people know deep down in their subconscious that they aren’t real but they can’t fully grasp it which is perhaps why the concept of death upon upload also isn’t really brought up much. Also perhaps they came to a different conclusion than you precisely because they are simulations. Perhaps to them they are all real, the billions of different versions that exist could all be real even if they are technically just copies of the first ones that lived in the real physical universe. Maybe to them there isn’t much difference between the physical person and the upload. And I may know why, it could be partially due to their subconscious knowing that none of them are real (or maybe it doesn’t), but there is another reason that might explain it more. It’s the initial scan of the brain for the upload. If it was just a copy then it should have scanned the brain without destroying the real copy existing in the physical world. But it couldn’t create a copy. The physical brain was in a sense transferred onto a digital realm. It’s more so a transfer than a copy in that sense because a copy wouldn’t destroy the original. But the original did get destroyed for the upload. If you copy a person you should have 2 copies of that same person running around. Just like you would if you were to clone the person. But instead of the same person running around twice in the same world you’d have one in the physical world and one in the digital one. But that’s not what happened. However a transfer is more similar to what happened. The physical brain left the physical realm and became something digital. While the body was left behind you could say the consciousness of the person was transferred into the digital realm. If you copy a file one your computer you have the same file twice, if you copy a piece of paper in a printer you have the same paper twice. However if you transfer a file from one folder to another it disappears in the first folder and reappears in the 2nd folder. Same thing if you make a transfer in the real world. Money for example if you buy something you transfer money from your account to another account. Or if you make a student transfer. The student is not part of school 1 anymore but instead of school 2. The whole upload is more reminiscent to that of transferring rather than copying or cloning.

@@qthequickI am not sure where I remember it but I thought they mentioned that the scan is down to the molecular level. DNA is a molecule and there is DNA in the nucleus of neurons. Edit: I found it in episode 2, 5 minutes in. It is a scan at the molecular level that happens with the neurons actively firing. So the DNA would be scanned and transformed into code along with the consciousness, brain, and blood. And since we know that their organs and senses were fully captured and are functional then I don't see why gametogenesis would not be possible. They could have even better control over the organs like the heart, liver, and stomach (since a character was asking about whether or not he could through up later on in the show). But I think that CIs would be seen as the progeny of the UIs since Mist did consider Maddie her sister so their could be two methods of reproduction one being the direct combination of code and the other being the one we are most familiar with.

I did not expect this to end with a character and their very own Dyson sphere, but I'm glad it did. A fellow by the name of Robert Bradbury coined the term Matrioshka Brain for a layered, thinking, sentient Dyson sphere. Such a thing has the ability to process the entire history of human thought in a few millionths of a second. So with this databank of people Maddie brought with her, not to mention many centuries of other VR history to bring along too, it would be a small matter to perfect history and toy with as you please. Mr Bradbury was a big proponent of transhumanism but died a bit over a decade ago.

Ok, the answer to your question: Carie is the fisherman in episode one that talks to Capian. The time when the Iranian UI and the Israeli UI join together is very very important for the plot, as they get absorbed by Safesurf, since Safesurf absorbs the essence of the UIs, that kicks something inside the UI, I think that defines the next actions of the UI forward. Waxman and Ellen checked in the computer and saw 4 UI in that location, Josephine, Steve Holmstrom, Caspian and MIST, missing the Iranian and the Israeli UI, that is my opinion on the importance of that scene. That is my opinion. It was a wonderful season, this type of series that only came up in 1 in 10 years, and I will watch it again at Christmas, the amount of details demands a second watch of the entire show. I dont think they are making a third season, the show doesn't need a new season, to risk the series being cancelled and leaving things in half, I think the showrunners decided to make a last stand in this season, I mean, it is quality content is just not getting as many views as other shows. + Who can tell how writing would be affected by TIME, I definitely agree with your friend about making this a 3 seasons show, and just that, it is amazing the amount of compressed information they could express in such a small run.

@oblivion_2852
@oblivion_2852 Жыл бұрын
@@thegeekweek I'm reading it now. There seems to be a bit of a misunderstanding though because the source material is just a collection of short stories. So far there aren't any continuous characters that the reader can relate to in the context of the ideas. This may be one of the cases where the adapted material is better than the source. Another example of this is the recent Foundation Series. The original stories were very disjoint more so about the empire, the technology, the time etc and less about building characters an audience can relate to. The tv show Foundation however threads the characters of Hari Seldon and Gaal Dornick throughout the long span of the empire. The time jump between season 1 and 2 was 150 years. Again there will be a time jump between season 2 and 3. Within the season there are amazing characters woven into the tapestry and between seasons there are the foundational characters. In the words of Asimov's grandaughter "he was never too good with characters and in this regard I believe the show is better"

There were a few things that felt weird to me about UIs. Like, if it’s just code why can’t they have infinite copies of someone all at once? Why couldn’t they store an extra Caspian in case he failed or just to bring him back if anything happened? How did David’s source code break in season 1? Why could t they just upload Holstrom immediately and make copies of him to solve it or at least hold onto his code and never use it until the issue was fixed instead of storing his brain? How does the AI develop and store anything when it’s reset? How is them being reset different than them being created from the source code again? We do actually see Chanda duplicate himself fully, but we never see anyone do that again. Like I guess integrity would be less important if they could just duplicate themselves and hibernate some of their copies or store themselves until everything is solved. I loved the fights also, but they also kind of bagged me because besides in one or two instances in season one they hardly related them to actual code at all. It just feels weird for their to be something so physical about a fight between code that’s probably more a me problem, though. The fights served their purpose well enough and they were beautifully animated and choreographed. Also, did they never make the technology to scan a living brain? I was interested in where the discussion would go when a UI and living person were both alive, I guess that doesn’t really matter though and it wasn’t really the discussion that they wanted to have. Okay. I loved this show, I just can’t help but to nitpick at things occasionally in a show like this and though I want to turn my brain off and enjoy it the show is encoring me to think about it deeply and when I do there are always little things that jump out at me. I don’t mean to not-pick. I wish the show was more popular because it definitely deserves it. I just wish the final arc of the series had a few more episodes to explore the ideas it had.

I kinda feel sad that Caspian and the girl died in the original timelines.. the ones are just simulation.. not that it matters as the simulated reality is just real any other if it's a perfect simulation.. this show raises a lot of philosophical questions.. it's definitely in my top 10.. I'm actually surprised by it tbh.. I really thought there would be no shows with such interesting concept after the golden age of anime faded away.. There are a few things here and there that kinda bugs me like the CG element is a bit jarring/janky and the final 2 episode felt a bit rush (though that's probably because they're constrained by the fact that they need to warp up the show in season 2). I also whole-heartedly agree that the several plot points in the last 2 eps came at me like rifle-shots, and if you missed even 2 or 3 words of dialogue then you might get lost. Actually I WAS kinda lost after the first time jump and it all became kinda 2001-Space Odyssey-ish for a bit, but your breakdown cleared up much of it. IMHO, ideally eps 9-14 should have become 8 eps, and then 15 and 16 would have become a 3rd season, but I suspect budget restraints were in play. In any case, this show is up there with the greatest stories I've ever read in visually-dramatized fiction - among which I would include the anime FLCL, Serial Experiments LAIN, and what the heck, Garth Ennis' Preacher comic series - in fact Renee really reminded me of a Preacher character (of course, DARK, is in there, etc..) I've only seen it once but I'm sure with rewatches things will be clearer, but one question still remains for me. For "time-travelling incursions" (ie David visiting Caspian on the beach, Maddie and David watching Julius during the break in), that would imply that the "primary" narrative was a simulation itself in which David and Maddie could enter. In that case, how does such a sequence of events play out without an initial "reality"? I guess this is an example of a "bootstrap paradox", and I just saw a similar thing happen in the series "Bodies" (well done, and worth catching but not Pantheon-level) and it kind of irked me here as well. Anyways, great job on the breakdown, if there's any justice this show will hopefully get Twin Peaks/Matrix levels of fandom worship.

I can't be the only one who thought that the time skips in the last few episodes made the show worse. I like Pantheon's story and premise but to me it seems that the plot would have been better off concluding with Langstrom's defeat. The moment the words "20 years later" appeared on the screen the show started to lose me and it only got worse after that. In no way do the time skips at the end ruin the show but that do take away from the strength of the plot in my opinion and make the ending a lot less satisfying.

Does anyone get what happened to caspian in the original non-surf simulation. Because like maddie says, her simulation only exists since they told her the year. But the caspian that talked to safe surf is from Maddie's simulation only (she says she died originally and that he waited too long to overclock). Is that supposed to be a reality we didn't see? Would suggest that she didn't die right away but had time to upload during the initial attack but she never got hurt in the simulated reality we saw since caspian was there to take the hits

This show has so many different scenes that can be broken down. The writing in this series is so well down...Like its crazy how well you connect with the characters and can understand some if not all their reasoning. It's like they aren't all black and white. Would I like a season 3? Yes, but does it need a season 3..i dont know maybe? Where they ended season 2 is pretty good honestly. I'm not sure what else they can explore or go with. Maybe the Galactic super robot thingy? Either way this show really touches on so many things from religion to philosophical things. Man, I really really love this series. But agree it could have had a few more episodes to flush some things out. The only thing I don't fully understand is, wouldn't there need to be a PRIME TIMELINE? Like wouldn't there need to be a timeline outside of the realities that Maddie made? Cause she probably uploaded when Dave Jr. then created a bunch of other realities to get to the part where her son died and where Caspian knew it would take 117,000+ years right? Cause if the beginning of the series was a simulation, then how would the galactic supreme beings come into existence if they were created during the events of season 1-2? Idk think this time travel part is messing with my head. lol
@thegeekweek
@thegeekweek Жыл бұрын
Well whether or not the beginning of the series is a part of the simulation or actually the reality Maddie lived isn’t specifically stated I don’t believe and left to interpretation. So assuming season 1 and season 2 to episode 5/6 is reality then that would be the “prime” timeline. Now even if everything in the entire show that we see is actually a simulation, it is still based on a life that maddie once lived as an embodied human that time period is our “prime” throughout the show
@odd02
@odd02 Жыл бұрын
@@thegeekweek yeah that makes sense. Kinda wish it explained that abit. Because I feel if it's not in the reality Maddie made then it's in the galactic reality since if what we saw up til ep5/6 is prime. The fact Caspian still knew how long it'll take her, shows there's a high power at play. Not sure if that makes sense. Sidenote, your video really summed up my thoughts on this show perfectly!

Am I the only one that hated the ending? As soon as they uploaded Caspian, I didn’t like where it was going. Watching them kill off Hannah with another Holstrom clone, and this whole introvert taken to the extreme just undoes everything good about the show. The show was great when it insisted that interaction with others was the key to everything. Isn’t that the whole point of fixing “the flaw”, that interaction with others is what defines humanity, not biological or silicon brains? It just jumped the shark way too hard, and while I don’t doubt Maddie couldn’t evolve over 100,000+ years, many of us want the “alternate Evangelion timeline” outcome, where Maddie and Caspian had a decent life together and humans sorted things out without the timeskip.

Watch episode 1, the classroom scene. When you watch it first time - you dont get it. But when you finish the show, that scene indicated a glitch in the simulation happened- the point to which many simulations of Maddie return to relive part of their life they liked the most. There is no jumping of gun. You dont understand the point of view

This has got to be one of my favourite shows (if not my most favourite) of the year! I honestly feel the same way, season 2 really exceeded my expectations. Personally, I wish this season was divided into two seasons because there was a lot packed into a small time frame for story telling. However, I know this was due to some constraints so I'm content. What they manged to do with one season's worth of content space was amazing!

I have so so so many question🗣🗣The simulation was born from events that actually happened, right? Why did Maddie make a simulation, what happened to the other UIs that moved Maddie to make a simulation in the first place? Did the black thing eat them all? So just humans survived and Maddie then uploaded herself? Leading her to make the simulation. But are the people/UIs in the simulation are real? Just wow

I truly believe that this is in our future. I don't know if we have such a positive outcome but I truly have faith in our species. We may not seem like it but we have if you average it out. We have moved in a positive direction as a hole. Sometimes we take two steps back and one step forward but sometimes we move 40 steps forward and two steps back. We may get there. I just hope we have enough time. Because the more our intelligence and awareness grows. So does our capacity and power to destroy it all. That is our paradox as a species. Also what they said is inside of every person who has every lived is the code to creat every human who has every lived.
