RO: Atunci când între pantograf şi reteaua de înaltă tensiune nu mai există, din anumite motive, contact perfect (în acest caz ploaia înghețată) au loc astfel de fenomene.
EN: When there is no longer a perfect contact between the pantograph and the high-voltage line, for some reason (in this case the frozen rain), such phenomena occur.

two pantograph are raised because of icy conditions: the first removes the majority of ice on the cable , the second find the best contact and best power absorption.

Must be ice on the overhead wires that is causing the pantograph to arc.
@JeanLucCoulon
@JeanLucCoulon Жыл бұрын
There are always arc, even in dry conditions. This is related to the dynamics of the systems. You have 2 oscillating systems: the catenary (contact wire) and the bow (contact strips of the pantograph), each of them having its own engen frequencies. The pantograph pushes on the contact wire, and this impulse causes oscillations. And sometimes, the pantograph is not quick enough. So the contact force is too low and there is some arcing.

The voltage looks considerably higher than 1.5 kV. According to WIkipedia, Romania uses 25 kV 50 Hz, which looks right for the size of the insulators.

@accatenary
@accatenary 5 жыл бұрын
Satyanarayanmurti Katta It does happens in India but its for fraction of second and looks like camera flash at night. Its hardly noticeable during day. Reason for this is slightest of temporary slack between contact wire and pantograph which reaults into ionisation of air.

Approximately how many amps at 27,000 volts?
@queenhyena84
@queenhyena84 5 жыл бұрын
It depends on the power "consumption" of a locomotive. To put it as simple and basic as possible: Let's say we have two locomotives in front of us. Both would require a power of 5 100 kW from the supply. The difference between the locomotives is that one is designed for a 15 kV electrification system (like in Germany or Skandinavia) and the other is designed for a 25 kV system (as used in large parts of England and on the Balkan for example). To meet the required power supply the 15 kV locomotives takes 340 A from the catenary (340 A * 15 000 V = 5 100 000 W) whereas the 25 kV locomotive only takes 204 A to "get" the 5 100 kW. Of course we haven't watched at the internal structure of the locomotives. That is a whole topic on it's own. the examples are purely hypothetical however. Usually, you'll find information of the output power of a locomotive. What it requires as input depends on the efficiency of the loco. And regarding the resistance it's just as complex as the efficiency. Especially in AC systems inductivities and capacitors don't just work straight forward. You have to consider the reactive power -- the power that an electrical AC device requires establishing electrical or magnetical fields.

It can occasionally happen. But dragging St.Elmo's Fire along is all but normal. In general, the locos have huge capacitors which can greatly minimize the arcing even at high speed on long-distance journeys. I've often seen the french T.G.V. ( Train à Grande Vitèsse -> High-Speed Train ) passing at 200Km/h with its pantograph momentarily flash-lighting up its surroundings at night. Quite a spectacular show, I'd say!
