I appreciate your calm and thoughtful tone. No need to panic but be prepared. I live in California where earthquakes are common so I have emergency freeze dried long term food (for 2 weeks) and plenty of water on hand in addition to a working pantry.

We love Coconut-Peanut Butter-Vegetable curry with cooked chickpeas, over Basmati rice. I've been buying the organic coconut milk for $1 a can from Dollar Tree whenever it is available. I start with chopped onion, carrot, and garlic sauteed in coconut oil, one can of coconut milk, Thai inspired spices, a half cup of peanut butter, cauliflower, green beans, and chickpeas. Simmered for about an hour then served over rice with a squeeze of lemon, green onion tops, and sometimes a dollop of plain greek yogurt.

I don't want to be "that person", but had to mention your home-preserved food... It's not safe to stack them like that. =( However, you can safely stack them with the bands loose on the jars (not tight; that's a no- no too) to give a gap so there's no pressure on your lids on your canned goods. =) I learned that last year from Heidi from Rain Country homestead on youtube. I know all the work that goes into canning and would hate for you to lose your food! I enjoyed your video and subscribed. =) We have a big family, too, and it's nice to see others out there!

I have such a hard time prepping without waste. Under normal circumstances, we eat almost nothing packaged-all fresh meats, fruits, and veggies. I know that won’t be an option in an emergency situation, but if I buy a bunch of oats and rice and beans (which we don’t normally eat), it eventually goes to waste because we don’t have constant turnover in our pantry. But we can’t stock up on fresh stuff. I guess a freezer is our only option? That will work in a food shortage situation, but not a SHTF situation, so it still seems prudent to stock the pantry. I just don’t know how to do it without being wasteful.

@Thingys-Jill 2 жыл бұрын
What you need to do is to repackage the oats and rice into sealed food safe buckets and put oxygen-eater packets in with them. They'll last a decade or two that way. Now the beans can also be repackaged and can always be planted in a garden for a crop. You could dehydrate the fresh fruit and store it the same way.

I have those 6 cubby shelf units that I now put in my closet sideways and store goods in. You can also use bookcases. If you don't want to see it all, then put up tension rods and little curtains. It doesn't have to be in the kitchen. I went from an 8' x 10' pantry in my old house to a 6 inch x 30 inch 4 door pantry next to my fridge. I put stuff in the cabinet over the washing machine too. I might outfit the entry closet with 4" deep shelves for food goods and that way I'd still have room for jackets.

Caution when storing pineapple..... the high acid content can cause cans of pineapple to go bad very easily, some times even before the expiration date. I have started storing mine inside of a plastic container just in case it should leak at least the liquid would be contained and not leak out causing damage to anything else. It made me grinch when I saw those huge cans at the very top of the pantry.... I would hate to see them leak down onto the shelves below.... 😕

Have you ever considered dehydrating fresh veggies and fruits? You put them in Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers and they last for YEARS! Take up little space and you just rehydrate when needed. This is a lot of canned food taking up a lot of space.

You have a large family and you live out in the country, so stocking up like this makes sense, even is very wise I would say. But over this pandamic I saw so many people stocking up, buying in bulks without a plan, buying stuff just because others did it too. Then things went to waste and the same people complain now about food shortage 🙄

It seems that buying and spending is more important than coming to reality for most. if one hasn't been prepping since 20010 at least, then it's pretty much too late to really stock up. One can't stock up in 30 days. Besides, the shortages have already begun and it's not going to get better. Good luck out there everyone!

The NIAC and Homeland security suggested everyone have a minimum of one year of food and water but more like two. Now China is telling it's people to get 1 year of food and water ASAP. Everyone should look at their pantries and find out how long it would last if the shit hit the fan and they couldn't go to the store anymore. It take approximately 750 lbs of dry goods per person per year regardless of age ( beans, rice, whole corn, wheat berries and other grains also pasta), 25 lbs of sugar and 10 pounds of salt and this IS also per person per year regardless of age. Your canned goods and 1 gallon of water per person per day just for drinking regardless of age. Lots of seeds, protection and medications. FEMA can come in your home and take whatever they want they just have to leave you 3 days of food and water. So hide your preps if things go bad.
@Pursuit.of.Simplicity
@Pursuit.of.Simplicity 2 жыл бұрын
Those are some insanely high estimates. We’re a family of 10 and do most of our cooking and baking from scratch and we’ve never even come close to using 750 lbs of dry goods per person in a year. I feel like astronomical estimates like that end up paralyzing people into doing nothing at all because they feel like they’ll never be able to store enough, whether due to money or space. Arming people with the tools to make a plan for their family and begin storing foods based on their specific preferences and needs seems to be the best place to start without overwhelming people brand new to preparedness and food storage. It’s scary how unprepared most American families are. Thank you for sharing that info!😊

@@Pursuit.of.Simplicity I agree. You have 10 to feed and we have two. Big difference on storage needs. Its more important to know yields from what you have stored so you know how much you need for x amount of time. For instance for a large loaf of bread it takes 4 cups of flour and a family of 10 would eat that up in one meal. For two people that same 4 cups of flour would make two medium size loaves and would last a week. Dry rice is 2 cups per lb so a 1lb bag equals 4 dry cups. 1 lb of rice is 6 cooked cups. So for a family of ten 2lbs will yield twelve cups so each person would get a little better than a one cup serving. IMO put up as much rice, beans, oats, pasta, flour, dry milk, cooking oil/baking supplies as possible and save as many seeds from the non GMO vegetables you buy so you can grow food to add to those staples to add nutrition and change up meals.

@@Pursuit.of.Simplicity I came up with a 2 meal a day weekly menu. I easily figured how much would be needed for 26 weeks based on x number of people. That's what I concentrated on. @@Pursuit.of.Simplicity it is high but it compensates for extra people and working during a SHTF event. Actually extra beans can be planted. Extra sugar and salt can be used to cure meats. Bear Independent has a breakdown on these figures. He may explain it better.

@@Pursuit.of.Simplicity I agree with you. I've had a pantry of staples for 40 years (obviously rotating things). My Grandma (RIP) taught me everybody should have the ability to concoct meals for a month. You also need vinegar (a great disinfectant along with culinary uses), bleach, toothpaste, hygiene products, and seeds for a garden (you can grow vertically and produce quite a bit of food in a very small space such as a tower garden).
