Each week I take 10 things out of my pantry and put them in a basket. When I think about cooking, these are the items I try to use. Sometime it takes 2 weeks, but it helps.

Lovely pantry! I strongly recommend storing grains, pasta, and things like muffin mix in sealed containers to extend shelf life and keep bugs out. Even a plastic tote on the shelf helps protect dry goods inside. My favorite way to store rice, pasta and oats is vacuum sealed in half-gallon Ball jars if you can get them.

I got a tip for your oats in the summer. Turn them into oat flour. All you need is a blender. Find your best bread recipe & substitute oat flour for wheat flour. It’s great right out of the oven or just sliced, toasted with butter. My favorite is toasted, buttered & spread with apple butter.

The baking powder in cornbread mix gets too stale to work after about 6 months to a year. If it doesn't start bubbling when you mix it then you may need to add more. We store cream of tartar and baking soda separately to make baking powder fresh, as needed.

Being gluten free helps keep things simple. I grind rice into flour and keep cornstarch on hand to tweak the texture. I use both rice and corn starch regularly. Ground grains don't last nearly as long, so storing in their whole form is the best.

I love your pantry and miss mine. Consider getting some more buckets for your rice, oatmeal, and cornbread… other dry goods. Put them in Mylar bags and toss in the bin. Store extra dry goods in an overflow closet or spare corner in a different area. Rice will just keep. So will beans, oats, sugar, grits, salt, and pasta. The smaller Mylar allows you to portion or just put wha you need visual on the shelf to use up. It will free up a lot of space.

Nice pantry. Good that you have decided to simplify your meals because it will not only give you more shelf space, but it will help to simplify your cooking. It was nice to hear that you will USE the items you're phasing out! I make my own ketchup -- I'll bet you will enjoy making your own. The commercial stuff is filled with corn syrup and terrible as a 'food'. You'll also enjoy making salsa -- it's a fun food to can. I can mine in the pressure canner, not water-bath, so I don't use vinegar and I can get thicker salsa that way. As you phase out the pancake syrup, get some honey -- it's a good food item and is great on biscuits, pancakes, and toast. I get a raw local honey (from apple tree pollen) for my allergies and it's so mild, not nearly as sweet as clover honey. Please consider putting your bagged rice in an oxygen-free bucket (or in mylar). Storing that way will preserve your rice for decades. I store my extra white rice in mylar w/ the oxygen absorbers -- packed like that will keep white rice edible for 30 years. Happy canning!!

Don't stack canning jars. Could be spoiled, but with pressure by being stacked you will not know. Also don't stock on too much mayonnaise, the oils easily become rancid. I have thrown away to many jars, after a year it takes on the rancid taste.
@Pursuit.of.Simplicity
@Pursuit.of.Simplicity 2 жыл бұрын
It’s really surprising the number of people who tell me not to stack my jars. If people would simply check the national center for home preservation website you’d see that it’s perfectly safe to stack jars two high as long as there’s cardboard in between and you don’t store your jars with the rings on. I store 6-9 months of Mayo at a time and I rotate them according to date. I’ve been doing it for years and have never let one expire or go rancid.☀️

I've been canning and stacking my jars for 44 years now. And I don't have any problems. I just always say when opening a jar to use. If it doesn't suck, you must chuck. Has always worked for me. And I can a lot. At least 2000 jars in the past 2 years. And I can everything from soup to veggies to meats to fruit, jams etc. I also dry everything. I always dry all my onions that I grow, all colors. And I don't wait for the tops to die. Because I cut them green and cut them up like large chives and dry them. Then I get double duty out of my onions. Also the onions then last me all year. I also dry my spinach, chard, kale, lettuce. That way I have 4 different dry greens to use in scrambled eggs, casseroles etc. Love my stuffed pantry. Especially now that prices are going crazy. Full pantries and freezers make me happy.

I sort by date. My food storage is separated by the best by dates and in different locations. The dehydrated and freeze dried cans are separate so I do not get tempted to use it. Canned meat is good until the best by dates from 2024 to 2026. From the best by dates of 2022 and 2023, I have to use a biscuit mix packet and some fajitas and taco ingredients. From the fridge, I need to use eggs. From the one of the many freezers, I need to use ground beef and boneless chicken. I have been using Knorr sides as I can just add canned meat and rehydrated vegetables to make a meal.

If you have an abundance of things of no interest, possibly donate to a pantry. God sends an abundance to those who work hard in preparation- the ant in the summer stores up for winter. An option for the grains, such as the oats, is to seal up portions in mylar with oxygen absorbers to extend the life to 10-20 years. Each depends on what they are for length of time extended. Freeze for 72 hours, bring back to room temperature and then seal in mylar with oxygen absorbers. Just an idea.

I am watching your video and fear you may have an insect invasion. You have so many foods, in boxes, cearl, pasta, etc., that will fill with pests if not stored correctly. I learn a lot about storage when I moved aboard our sailing vessel. We planned in sailing from California to Rome, italy and wanted to store 6 months of food. I was strongly advise to NEVER bring cardboard on board, and that was good advice for land homes too, as cockroaches can and do lat eggs in the cardboard. Also that unless packaged carefully, bugs will get into rice, pasta, beans, etc., and spread into the entire pantry. I hope we never have to face - TSHF but if it does none of us want to find it infested with bugs. (Heard one guy say the bugs are protein but no thanks for me!). God bless you and keep up the great videos.

@@Pursuit.of.Simplicity I only recently heard of the freezing as many of us do not have freezers large enough to freeze a large potion of rice or beans. I did hear, on another UT video that we won’t die if a bug gets into our rice or flour but can if the product was damp and mold developed. Just put up a bucket of rice with the oxygen absorber, and looks like still a little air in the bag. Should I open the Mylar bag, add another Oxygen absorber and reseal?

Thank you so much for this pantry tour. I am very new to it all but am finding it hard to make sure I use up the food before the date. What guideline do you use for that? Specifically, I see you have lots of peanut butter and mayo/miracle whip. Both of those in my stock is getting close to date but can't imagine how I will use them up before. Hence, i hesitate on buying more. Again, i appreciate your videos and the time it takes to share what you are doing with your pantry.

I never said we weren’t going to use it. We will use everything in our pantry. There are simply some things that I won’t continue to purchase because we aren’t using it regularly.

@@Pursuit.of.Simplicity That is good but my comment was really for everyone as, with higher food prices, food pantries tend to get fewer donations and this hurts many elderly, disabled, and children of lower income families. So in the difficult times coming, it is still important to give a little where we can to help those in possibly even greater need. Mean no negative refection on anyone. :)

As we look at Pantry's what do you see besides food processing plants closed down for good or food processing plants burnt down. As today - Shanghai petrochemical burnt down at night wow another at night but what did they do, ethylene, fiber, resin, plastics, ok so how many plastic foods do you see in this pantry. If you don't have a great understand of what's going on in our world. You even cut stuff off that store's it makes you very hungry. Now our recycling plants all burnt down at night our plants are all about gone and there after our ground foods so you gave food? How about stuff to cover your window in case things go nuts. My son works Army be ready they are

@swcomment5542

Why? If you have cans that don’t have the pull tab top they will last for 20 or 30 years. Just for some perspective, they said the guys in the Vietnam war the canned World War II rations. I recently opened a can of deviled ham I purchased in 1998 so almost 24 years ago and it was perfect. Beyond perfect, it was downright tasty. And obviously I didn’t die. Now if you have the pull tab tops those don’t last quite as long because air can get into them. But they will last beyond the use by date easily.

I wasn't sure how to gather food so I just thought the amounts we would be grateful to get in an Anne Frank situation. I thought 1/2 can of anything, per person. Not "enough" for my greedy frightened self but enough to mentally justify, if my nutty way of thinking makes any sense.

I don’t store my canned goods with the rings (unless it’s just dehydrated foods) and the national home preservation website says it’s totally fine to stack your jars two high as long as there’s cardboard in between them and you don’t store them with the rings on. I’ve been doing it for decades.
