I think it is great that you restock and try to keep a years supply on hand. Having raised a family with 6 kids(5 are grown and gone now) I know what it takes to feed and meet the needs of 8 people for a year. In 2004 I thought...THOUGHT I was good for 6 months. That was the year we were struck by 4 hurricaines in Palm Beach County. 2 massive hits by Jeanne & Francis. I was 7 months pregnant for #6. At the time I prided myself on sales shopping and being ready. HA! It didn't take long before we were out of most things. What I thought was a lot was based on normal shopping. I didn't take into account was the kids ate at school most afternoons, and we did eat out more than we should. And the lack of electricity for weeks...and the destruction of our house. These were all things I didn't take into account when I thought I was *loaded up*. And then there was the heart factor, I didn't have the heart not to help the senior citizens who lived to the left and right of us. They contributed, but they didn't have much. And I was not going to make an 81 yo war vet go hungry. So I guess I am going on a bit... lol sorry. I encourage everyone to to multiple 3 x household when looking at preps. Could you really provide 3 meals a day every day for what is stored? Realistically... with some feeling of normalcy? We have moved to rural Nebraska. And I di prep... I never ever want to tell family(kids) again there isn't anything more till FEMA comes tomorrow. Blessings All. :)

Hello from Mrs. CB. Our nearest Walmart is about 35 miles away so most of the time we grocery shop twice a month. We make each grocery trip count so we don't have to go to the store so often, I don't enjoy shopping as much as I used to. That means more time for crocheting!

We stock a Years + as well. I went really over board last year canning our old time favorites and a lot of newbies. It's really eye opening to see how we consume our foods. I haven't opened 1 jar of home canned banana peppers yet. It's almost a year since I've canned them....I'm utterly shocked! But I also know not to take up space in my garden with them this year (for abundance any how) I truly enjoy having my pantry well stocked now so I can see what foods we actually consume. I have plenty of 'new' items to try as well so we don't get bored but we're creatures of habit lol.
@Pursuit.of.Simplicity2 жыл бұрын
I feel the exact same way! There’s so much left from what we canned last year. We’re total creatures of habit also. But it’s so comforting to know we have it if and when we need it. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for addressing that prepper can be such a negative term but it doesn't need to be! I am like you where I do not have freeze dried or long term storage. My goal right now is to get up to 6 months of food and 12 months of non-food items.
@ljreynolds78772 жыл бұрын
If possible, if you shop Walmart, you could buy one number 10 can of freeze dried something, in an interval your finances can bear, and over time, you'll have filled in some gaps with some freeze dried food. As an example, I bought a can of butter flakes. They also have canned heirloom seeds that can be stored in the freezer.

Have you ever heard of those fancy shave creams that are clear & you only need to use a tiny amount? After trying them I’ve moved to using hair conditioner for shaving. I had cabinet shelves with unused space on top. I purchased 2 tension rods at a well known Japanese dollar store for $1.75 and store lightweight items like paper towels, toilet paper, napkins, disposable cutlery and styrofoam cups on them. My shelf space doubled at a cost of less than $15. I've had no problems with the rods falling.

Ladies, Walmarts in my local area have been very low on female sanitary products, stock up. ( and pet food) Putting dish soap in a small pretty pump dispenser helps us, just two pumps does it. If you have a vacuum sealer you can vacuum sealed your pasta. I lay my spaghetti in the bag and vacuum seal. Four shaped pasta IU 64 ounce jars and I have the jar sealer attachment for my vacuum sealer. I’ve never had a single bug in anything but I vacuum seal everything. Flour, sugar, packages of instant mashed potatoes. It all gets the air sucked out.

I’m 73 and retired. But I have a philosophy. I make myself do three things every day that moves me in a forward direction. That could be buying two cans of extra food for my pantry, using my fruit that’s going bad to make vinegar….Planting lettuce on my deck. If you think about it if you do three small things every day then in a month you’ve done 90 things that will make your life easier in the future. Lots of things at the dollar store that you can purchase and put in the pantry.
