Most countries still had anti-tank rifles in their military inventory at the beginning of WWII - the Solothurn S18-100, the Lahti L39, the Boys AT Rifle, the PTRD and PTRS, and so on. For Germany, this role was fulfilled by the Panzerbüchse 39, a single-shot falling block rifle firing a high velocity 8mm AP cartridge. It was nominally effective in the opening campaigns of the war, but was quickly rendered obsolete as Allied armor improved. German planners has a huge number (25,000) of these on hand for the invasion of Russia, where they expected Russian armor to be vulnerable to them - which was not the case. Most were subsequently converted into Granatbüchse 39 AT grenade launchers, which were then used until the end of the war.

Haha, when i was very young, me and my friend went onto the roof of the house where lived (5th story). He had a sports slingshot and marbles as ammunition. From above we could see the side of a parked food truck and we thought it was funny to to shot at it from above. So we shot at it a few dozen times and did not realize we could hurt anyone and were laughing each time we hit that truck and could hear that metallic "plonk" noise on impact. Next day he told me that when he walked to school (along the street where the food truck was) he saw that every of our hits actually punched a hole into the side of that truck and it looked like it had been in a warzone. :-)

Little correction, I can see the ammo box for the other side is probably the same as the left, the mounting on right side of the rifle is slanted so you dont have to have two different boxes - which is actually a naturally clever idea. Wonder if the stored ammo flies out during recoil if you let the box cover open.
@MrJest2
@MrJest2 9 жыл бұрын
DudeNumberOnePlus I think that's the purpose of the spring clips - to prevent the rounds from flying out. :-) Wish I had the bucks for this (and a machine shop to make the ammo cases and rounds); it's one of the few truly "very high power" rifles one can own in California (land of the first .50 BMG ban).

oh, there is one modern round you could make and load for this gun or even an 8mm Mauser K98 or Mosin Nagant. :} A tungsten carbide bullet encased in a copper jacket so it doesn't tear up the rifling. The Germans did make some plane 20-30 mm cannons with such ammunition that which their special Aces would use on tank busting runs.

Probably worth mentioning that although anti-tank rifles soon became unable to penetrate tanks' frontal armour, it was a very different story with side and rear plates. Right to the end of the war there were reports of tanks knocked out by Soviet AT-rifles in particular. The Panther was notably vulnerable as its side armour is relatively thin (or to put it differently, its weight of armour in concentrated at the front).

Your german pronunciation is always almost spot on. Panzerbüchse is an alien word for you i guess. The "ch" of Büchse can be easy replaced by an "k" for pronunciation. (Bükse) This is a vowel thing with the "ü" standing before the "ch". Never mind your german is that good that it almost feels wrong to tell you ;)

Sweden actually had quite an interesting Anti tank RR made during ww2. the Carl Gustav pvg m/42 recoilless anti-tank rifle. It was the world's first shoulder-fired recoil-less weapon it Fierd a 20mm Projectile and would penetrate 40mm of armor at 100m. It was quite light and mobile for a Anti tank rifle and had the advantage that it could be fired from the shoulder (while standing) while most other Anti tank rifles required u to be Prone or have something to lean the weapon on. Sadly when it enterd service in 1942 it was already unable to counter most medium tanks being mass produced and as such only 1000 of them where made. However the experience in developing it later led to the famous Carl Gustav M48 wich is going strong to this day.

I actually think it would be less deadly than a kar98 just because the bullet travels so fast it would just go out the other side with just a hole, not a crater on the backside. Penetrative rounds are less damaging to the body than subsonic or expanding rounds. Search how hollowpoint bullets work and you will understand.

Geneva. Actually, as a small canon-ball hit the leg of giovanni dei medici in a battle against germans in 1525, and he subsequently died, the grief was so big among aristocrats in Europe, that using artilery against infantery got forbitten. Of course, this rule was broken many times since then (I guess?), and made rigid with the Geneva convention, more than 400 years later... Watch the film "the medici warrior"...

+clothar23 Would be kind of difficult to get the casings. You'd probably have to custom-order those, since there's nothing like it around anymore. You might get a Berdan 2 for some experience loading outdated proprietary cartridges first, since those are pretty large and easier to load. Just fire-form a Win .348 and cast a bullet(you'll have to order the mold) out of 99% lead and 1% antimony. In any case, you'll want to do a ton of research to find out what type of bullet, powder and primer it used
@3L3C7R0N0
@3L3C7R0N0 8 жыл бұрын
+clothar23 Well, if it's a standard 8mm bullet like Ian says, then all you really need is the case to figure out what kind of primer it needs. Trying to find reloading dies for this would be impossible. You'd have to custom order them from Hornady or some other diemaker. The powder load could be inferred by unloading one of the military rounds and weighing it. Most likely it's a slow-burning rifle powder not unlike what they were using for standard 8mm cartridges, comparing it visually under a magnifying glass to a military surplus 8mm load from germany in that time frame would be a good bet. The hardest part would be the brass and reloading dies, as is any wildcat/defunct round.
@NecrosAcolyte
@NecrosAcolyte 8 жыл бұрын
laszu The Berdan 2 never used jacketed bullets, along with most firearms made in that era. All a jacket does is increase your penetrative power, it's not there for safety or to engage the rifling. Lead does that just fine by itself, go get yourself a black powder gun and see.

The falling action on that Panzerbushe is quite clever, and the round holder is also very clever. They should have made it like a duel purpose Anti-material rifle and grenade launcher, but I can see why the grenade launcher would be better near the end of the war Would it be easier to use for first time shooters because the sights aren't off to the side like the Boys Anti-Tank rifle?

Hey Ian, thanks for the interesting video, as always. Just a tip for your pronunciation of German names/words (from a German-American): You're already doing a pretty good job at pronouncing the umlaut (Ü). However, the word "Büchse" in German sounds more like the words "dixon" or "vixen" in English (minus the 'n', and with the umlaut in place of the 'i', of course). Another tricky thing to pronounce in German is the 'eu'. In your video on the Mauser "Schnellfeuer" Mod. 712 it sounds like you're doing an umlaut again, but the 'eu' in "Schnellfeuer" (rapid fire) actually sounds more like in the words "boy" or "coy". Imagine you're putting an '-er" at the end of those words and you pretty much have the correct pronunciation for the German "-feuer" (fire). Please don't be offended by this comment, I'm really trying to provide some genuine constructive criticism so you can improve your videos even more. Cheers from Germany

The Panzerbusche was a practical and usable anti-tank weapon during the first half of WW2. In his autobiography, German Tiger tank ace Otto Carius explains that Soviet PTRD teams would disable the vision ports and aiming devices on even the mighty Tiger tank, requiring them to carry dozens of replacement parts with them into each engagement. The German anti-tank rifles could and were used in the same way. Although post 1941 most anti tank rifles were ineffective in destroying tanks they weren’t useless on the battlefield. Just playing Devil’s Advocate here.

Simply viewing this kind of a weapon almost makes you realize why the Germans lost the war- this is a simple firearm overengineered "to perfection", yet ultimately becoming so complex, it's "perfection" defeated it's practicality. It's like they had produced this weapon, and just kept adding stuff to it to sort of plug holes in the design flaws. For instance, having mirror image box ammunition holders makes the factory not only produce said boxes for ammunition out of stamped metal (when they could've just produced more guns instead), but producing a 2-piece matching set for each weapon, as well as replacement parts. This might have been a formidable weapon in it's time, but compared to the Soviet PTRD and PTRS designs, which were pretty much a lock, stock and a barrel, and equally (if not even more) effective, it's just too complex to be fielded in massive enough numbers. On the side note, the way Ian pronounced "die Panzerbüchse" is so wrong it made me giggle. :) Native English speakers can really deform some of the foreign words... Also, with the imperial measuring units, I almost got no data out of this video at all, and I was really looking forward to learning something.

So if its not considered a "destructive device" it means that (if I lived in the US) i could buy a fully functional weapon like this or the Polish ur wz. 35 legaly without any special permits? uhuh. It's a good thing it costs 40,000 dollars. That isn't an issue. Weapons like this are so niche that the only people buying them would never and, might I mention, have never committed a crime in US history with them. Even modern Barrett .50 caliber sniper rifles, which cost a mere 11,000 dollars I might add, have no criminal history of use. it's not an issue and never will be.

Much after the fact, but the ammo box for the other side of the gun is not the mirror image for the one on the right side, because the mounting on the gun is not at the same angle. What that suggests is that the same ammo box fits on both mounts that puts the opening towards the shooter and the hinge away from the gun.

The Soviets had some success using their anti-tank rifles on German tanks throughout the war. While it couldn't penetrate their armor anymore, it could penetrate the armored glass viewports of many German tanks. Quite a few tank commanders met their demise to this tactic.

quentintin1 I also believe it was able to pierce the side armour of a Panther tank quite late in the war. It's why Germans started mounting schurzen on the Panther as well.
@yuyuyu25
@yuyuyu25 9 жыл бұрын
burningphoneix Yes, the lower side armour of the Panther was penetrable by the 14.5 ATRs at ~100m, which is suicidal close, but still happened. A number of Panthers were lost at Kursk due to those guns in fact. As you said, schurzen basically negated this threat though.
