@SusCalvin3 жыл бұрын
A lot of the european NATO countries used national service on a large scale. You take entire generations of men, one after the other, and push them through mandatory service. The length of basic training varies but the expectation is that most will enter reserve status and keep doing their day jobs. Maybe with the occasional training exercise. For the state, it means a cheap and ready reserve to mobilize for territorial defence. One of the side effects was that lots of men would have army experience. Your teacher or the dude painting fences or the guys at the chess club would all have this common experience. National service has a general drop at the end of the Cold War. I think it was harder to motivate the huge costs when the reason for those costs have just toppled over with all its weaknesses showing. And national service is still not a fun thing, it's still a forced hike where you get pulled from your day job for a few years.

@@bigeddiespaghetti5618 Logistics and support was important then as well. You need a lot of maintenance hours for a main battle tank. By this time, the mechanization is more complete. It's not like the immediate post-war period where you still had partial motorization and bike infantry. They imagine a short and intense air war where both air forces nearly decimate eachother to gain superiority. A lot of the defence organisations of Europe were swelled out with guys who did that. When you have large amounts of people from national service, they can do things cheaper than civilian contractors. Someone needs to sit in a nuclear bunker and just rearm submarines with torpedoes all day or watch air radars.
@SusCalvin3 жыл бұрын
@@suspicioususer For european NATO dudes of this time it most likely means national service. The government drops you a letter when you're past 18 and tells you which barracks to report to. For a few years you do basic training, and most of you slip back into reserve status to keep doing your day jobs until a mobilization order comes. Sometimes there was repetition training and rehearsal of the system.a It's not a popular system when you pull large amounts of guys from their ordinary life and it's always costly to run a large standing military. I think you could motivate it when the Soviet Union was sitting right next to you looking menacing. But after the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the soviet system a lot of that motivation disappeared. For the state, it means a relatively cheap reserve body of troops who can have a surprisingly high quality for use in territorial defence and regional operations. NATO units train in how to operate with other NATO units and form a sort of joint force.

Great video, love the vibe. '77 was the year my father was in the German army, he was with a tank battalion, so I'm sure he saw scenes like this in real life. Just one thing: Are you certain the footage is from '77? Germany stopped using steam engines on its railroads in that year and it was only on a very specific route in the north of Germany. The terrain shown here has too many hills for that area, so I assume that the scences in the beginning are from the early 70s. But that is a very nerdy, nitpicky remark, so don't feel criticized ;)
