I love seeing all the love to Gion and Kawaramachi area! My grandmother lives right in the Gion area near Sanjyo Kawaramachi, it’s the greatest area to be when visiting! My grandmother have never even ridden in a car (except taxi) until several years ago when she got injured because everything is so close by. My grandfather was a professor at Kyoto Daigaku (Kyoto University) and researcher. My grandmother’s favorite was Takashiyama. What’s great is that it’s still have a lot of old school services like the yaoyasan (produce store) that comes by and sells out of their truck, dry cleaners that come by to pick up and drop off, etc. so there really was no need for her to get in a car. Kawaramachi train station is only one block away! I can’t wait to go back! She actually still had the traditional Japanese bathrooms , bath tubs, kitchen, etc till my grandfather passed away and then my mom and her sister convinced her to renovate. I can’t wait to go back! It’s been so long since I have gotten to go back to Japan and visit but it’s great to see your video Paolo! So much changes so quickly!

I was in Japan twice this year, 3 weeks between February and March and 2 weeks during October. I like to spend more time in Kyoto than any other place in Japan. 0:40 Gion is more interesting in the evening when the street lights and lanterns are lit and there are plenty of good restaurants to choose from. 9:05 There is a side path on the right in Fushimi Inari-Taisha. The "hiking" path is pretty quiet even on busy days and does not have torii gates. There are bamboo trees, little shrines and a Shinto graveyard along the path. Walk the path in the morning or at night, it's quite relaxing. I also recommend walking the Philosopher's Path, start at Ginkakuji Temple and walk down to Nanzenji Temple, a relaxing and interesting walk.

11:08 - Thank you for the "wajoryomen sugari" recommendation, I tried it last night and LOVED it. English-friendly (you order from a touch screen) and the wait was quite brief since I arrived when they re-opened at 6pm. ****IDEAL FOR SOLO TRAVELERS WHO WANT A HIGH-LEVEL RAMEN EXPERIENCE W/ ZERO FRICTION.**** Beer is a lite lager and the broth is more fish-based in flavor. Also there are drawers in front of each seat with chopsticks and seasoning devices (keep your translator app ready for the seasoning drawer, but other than that no japanese required) *tip for westerners* it is definitely a hole in the wall and the device you order from is deep inside, you wont see it from the street/have to enter to see it. Jump down the rabbit hole and trust itll be there, no japanese required. In my top 5 favorite ramen bowls Ive had in my life time.

Definitely go to Fushimi Inari Taisha early if you can. Don't worry too much if there are a lot of crowds though, most people don't actually want to do the 2 mile walk up Mt Inari so it gets a lot quieter as you go up. Don't be one of those people who stand in the middle of the path trying to take photos when there are people trying to get past though..
