I was 21 yo, in LA. First vacation on my own, first time in the USA, first time I rented a car. I had a 9 hour jet lag and got lost in what I only later learned was a rather dodgy part of the city. T'was before the days of nav systems. Got out of the car, promptly started crying, and was immediately surrounded by a group of black guys. I tried to explain my problem to them, with my broken English and all. They were incredibly nice and one of them brought me to the hotel. That's it. There's no "but then". Haven't thought of this for ages. I've since learned that the 5 digit numbers in LA street addresses aren't ZIP codes. I'm still trying to learn to properly speak English. (Your channel is awesome, I have learned tons from it.)

Thanks for sharing this anecdote. This reminds me that there are good people in America - something that I need reminding of. You were so lucky! But it does happen. There are wonderful people in America.
@FifthCat53 жыл бұрын
No, they are zip codes. Essential for mail and used as a kind of shorthand for neighbourhoods. Not just in LA but in the whole USA.
@markoldgeezer1673 жыл бұрын
@Choco Bun "Zip code" is the American term. "Postcode" is the British term.
@FifthCat53 жыл бұрын
@@markoldgeezer167 Right, they’re like postcodes, but people use the whole 5-digit number in casual speech, as one would say SW3 or EC1 in London to indicate a neighbourhood. Best known example is probably 90210 for Beverly Hills.

Hello, Aly. Here’s my story. I remember my arrival with my family to Venice in 2018, a gorgeous city, actually. My parents, my sister and I were supposed to meet there with Maria, my niece. She met us at the airport, then we arrived at a river station , it was evening, there weren’t lots of people in the street. And we were going to buy tickets for a river tram. While my niece and I were doing this, the rest of our group were looking around, it took one dodgy guy literally 5 minutes to steal our purse 👜 with all the passports and cash in it. That was a good lesson to all of us how to keep all the passports and money in one bag🙂

São Paulo, Brazil. Teenager me was going to meet a friend at a shopping mall far from my house, by bus, for the first time. I was distracted in my phone, when I overhear a woman talking to another something like "oh, when I was visiting my husband in jail...", I look around, and realize I was passing by a favela, very dodgy area. Luckily, everything went right, and my friend's father got me home, after I tell him this story. (Uber didn't exist that time)

One day my mother, my sister and I took a Uber to go to a shopping mall. The GPS took the driver into a favela here in Rio. We went to an odd favela, a dark bridge and then to a empty street with only grass around. Suddenly the car broke. The driver did his best to make it work but we went on foot. We had to pass through the empty street, cross the dark bridge (I barely could see my feet) and pass through the odd favela again, but on foot! I never felt so safe when we arrived to a more secure area. We then decided to visit a person instead. We never went to that shopping mall again.

Once when i was still in middle school i used to take the english course which was placed in a dodgy area. Heaps of people told me that there have been so many people got scammed by some bad guys who intended to steal their phone. But mate, i was so stupid. I didn't believe in that story and i didn't keep me guard up every time i went there. Until this one day, the place was so quiet cos there were only few people there. There was a shady guy that came in. He acted so strange though. But, I didn't mind even a bit cos the lesson i got that time was kinda mind numbing. When the class was done, i got this a bit skeptical feeling cos the atmosphere in that place was bloody oath dodgy. Then i got out and waited for me mum to pick me up in the pavement. Suddenly, there's a guy who told me that he needed to borrow me phone for transferring data. At first, i knew this guys was bloody oath iffy. But, my stupid kind polite mind just lent him me phone. Strangely, he didn't do anything with me phone, he just scrolled randomly and open my messenger. So, i took my phone back, and sat down on a bench (I thought that guy wouldn't follow me). But, MATE. He followed me and insisted on borrowing me phone. I wanted to get in, but i didn't wanna make others in danger. So i kinda rushed outside, to find a crowded pavement. But that guys chased after me by using his motorcycle. That guy yelled at me, "Give me your phone, or i'll kick your butt." So yeah... i still wanted to live on. So, i handed him my phone. Thanks for the Lesson SIR!!

Last year I was in Spain, Barcelona. I waited for a bus at the bus station. Had one backpack and a huge ecobag with me. 3 shady people came to ask me about the bus schedule. It was really fishy but I wasn't wary of that. Eventually, they distracted me to mug me . Unfortunately, I didn't keep my wits to keep that backpack before me so had the most unpleasant experience of travelling ever. Seems like the bus station was kinda a dodgy area.
