My biggest issue when I replayed the game recently wasn't the lack of difficulty (easy games don't bother me if they're still fun), but that it is VERY slow to get going. It takes a long time to start getting your reaction abilities and expanding on them, so while Paper Mario is crazy fun the first time, it takes a while to get into it on a replay. But the first few dragging hours are worth it, because the writing's great even in the slow parts, the charm is resonant, and with time the combat system gets super fun and engaging. Glad they re-released this on the Wii U Virtual Console, because I never owned the game for N64 - just rented it a bunch - so I'm glad to have a way to add it to my library. It's a classic. Great review, thanks for the in-depth look :)

@@HammyWolf90 TTYD featured a lot of rehashed ideas from Paper Mario 64 such as Chapter 1 having a Koopa town and a castle, Chapter 3 featuring an oversized Clubba as a boss, Chapter 5 taking place on a tropical isle, Chapter 7 taking place in a snowy region, Cortez telling Mario to turn back similar to how Tutankoopa did to him in Paper Mario 64, Lord Crump using an X-Naut squad in Chaper 5 like General Guy did, being able to paly as Peach at the end of each chaper and her having an alley Twink and TEC-XX, and chasing the main villain though long stairs, even some of the partners themselves were just rehashed like Goombella being a Goomba parter like Goombario, Koops being a Koopa partner like Kooper, and Admiral Bobbery being a Bob-Omb parter like Bombette. Woah. Compared to the Kingdom Hearts and Chrono Trigger review, this review seemed way more up beat. I can tell just by the tone, and jokes in the video. I actually think that's really cool. It kind of shows how you feel about the games, or what's going through your mind when making the review. In the KH videos you had a really calm tone, and the way you talked made the videos feel philosophical (IMO). However, this one was really up-beat and you were really enthusiastic. Kind of feels like a reflection of the games you're reviewing, but that's just my opinion.

All three of my packages are in your PO box now. PS Is Mike doing anymore of Xenogears on twitch, I just got an account the other day, just checked twitter but it just mentions he is having trouble figuring out deathblows. (Death blows always end with X. Tr = 1 point of stamina, Sq = 2, X = 3. If you only have 4 stamina the only DB you can unlock is Tr, X (1+3). when you get 5 stamina you can get Tr, Tr, X (1+1+3) or Sq, X (2+3) and so on. You have to be a certain level to unlock them but you also have to practice the combo till you get 100%, check the progress in the status-skills menu. Sorry Casen to hijack your review.

I actually don't like streaming games that I'll be reviewing because I get distracted by the chat and miss important text. I think I'll save twitch streaming for more laid back play sessions. -Mike
@ChocolatierRob8 жыл бұрын
Ah well, that's a fair point, never mind. I'll just throw you a few more deathblow tips here then. If you cancel a normal attack without using all your stamina then the leftover stamina gets stored in a gauge, you can build up to 25ish points. To use these points choose combo then allocate those points to deathblows you have learned and unleash them all in one go, handy for bosses that heal a lot. The system for Gear deathblows is completely different but still uses the dbs you have learned. When the db gauge is at zero any regular attack will charge it by one for the next turn. Once you are at lv1 you can use the weakest dbs by pressing Tr, Tr or Tr, Sq. If you choose Sq, X or Tr-cancel you will charge to lv2. from lv2 you can use dbs starting with Sq (Sq, Tr or Sq, Sq). Lv3 allows X, Tr or X, Sq. To use the stronger dbs of each level your gear needs to equip Deathblow items lv1= Tr, X. lv2 = Sq, X. lv3 = X, X. Remember, you need to unlock regular dbs to get the gear dbs. I think that mostly covers it.

Since your review of Super Mario RPG, i have give then a try, along with the first 2 Paper Mario games. And yes they are charm and great games, and pretty easy. And i would like to remark, that if you suck at timing(Like i do), this would probably be one of the few RPG's with timing require for special attacks, that you may be able to do correctly some extra moves... Sometimes... Probably always the hold and release button, but don't count on always getting an okay damage out of the other type of attacks... Also, i don't recommend to watch LPs of this games, at less, I swear that, i watched a full LPs of FF4, FF6, FF7, FF9, FF10 without falling sleeps. But you put an LP of a Paper Mario game, and i drops like a rock, whatever i feel sleep or not.

Also Super Paper Mario is the only one without turn based battles. Sticker Star and Color Splash both have turn based battles, they just weren't as popular because they use disposable items as attacks (stickers and cards, respectively).

I need to play this game at some point

Unpopular Opinion: I don't like this game and I find it boring in the middle parts of this game (Still Better then Color Splash)

Wow. The comments here remind me that this must have been my first turn based RPG as a child and ive replayed it at least 3 times since. Its simple, easy, but it was so fun as a kid in the early 2000's.

Paper Mario died after the third game, less emphasis on story and more emphasis on paper and jokes.

Great review Casen. This is a game I would like to play, but I don't have it unfortunately. Do you three guys have any thoughts on Paper Mario Colour Splash? Is it something you will definitely be picking up?
@ResonantArc8 жыл бұрын
Thanks!! I'm not planning on getting color splash. The Paper Mario games have disenchanted me of late. They just aren't what they used to be

Thanks for review, I will skip this "kiddish no one asked for". I'm more into high quality Dark Souls/Bloodborn games.

I would love for the next Super Smash Bros. game to include Paper Mario and partner, where he can live switch among perhaps 4 partners. He would have his hammer bv course and would be able to use each partner's unique abilities. It would be sad though if the gameplay is shit like Brawl or Smash 4 though.

While I enjoyed this game, the art style really bothered me. I didn't mind the cartoony 2-D in a 3-D world thing, but the character models themselves look like baby toys.... it turned me off. Especially after playing Mario RPG where the art style was, imo, aimed at older audience (older than Paper Mario 64) and where the story and music was top notch, this game felt like a step in the wrong direction, for me at least :/

I’m almost tearing up thinking about this game. Good times. Wish I could back to those days and change some things in my life.

It is always good to hear a review from people very passionate and knowledgeable about the genre. Makes me want to play through everything again. Too much stuff coming out this fall. Looking forward to whenever you all get into the Dragon Quest reviews.
