What a great chapter this was. We solved a "murder" mystery, got to fight Jr. Troopa as an old man, scaled a snowy mountain, explored this abandoned sanctuary and we fought one of the coolest bosses in any Mario game for the final Star Spirit... *All with an AMAZING soundtrack!*

Chapter 7 ends with the coolest boss fight in the game - and, perhaps, the entire series. It's a fun fight, and between the beautiful setting, the great music, and the genuine difficulty of the fight itself, this really is the perfect way to end Chapter 7. I also found a use for Lakilester in this fight, which is a rare occurence - his cheep all target attack made the ice bits completely ineffectual, even as Mario was frozen solid for several turns in a row. The Crystal King himself is something I have a fond memory of. Back in the early days of youtube, there was a series called "Wrath of the Ice God," a Pokemon/Mario crossover that I remember watching a lot as a child. In fact, it was one of the first things I ever watched on KZbin. While the series has since become largely lost media, the Crystal King himself is something that sticks out in my mind because his sprite/model was used as the avatar for the eponymous Ice God. Just seeing him brings back just the hints of those old memories. It's a reminder of my childhood, really, even though I never played this game as a child.

Oh man I was gonna mention the same thing. Man that was memorable series. Introduced me to a lot of pokemon legendaries that I had no idea existed at the time. (Didn't have any mainline games after gen 1 at the time and only knew of a few gen 2 and 3 mons). But yeah, Crystal King will always remind of a powerful ice deity Mario had clashed against.... and also scatman.

Personally my favourite boss is the final bowser fight in paper Mario you can tell the history behind Mario and bowser and how this fight is personal on both it’s also the only time bowser would have one of it wasn’t for peach and twink interfering when they did.

Man I remember this fight one of my earliest memories in gaming was fighting the Crystal King, finishing the fight and basking in the glory only for Merlee to pop up and double my star points! I remember I was following along with the OG Paper Mario Let's Play of Chuggaa's way back then and I shouted "TAKE THAT EMILE!" I was so hyped! Absolutely love this game

You know, when you think about it, scattering the Star Spirits throughout the Mushroom Kingdom was the worst idea Bowser had. Think about it, Mario can't beat Bowser because he's invincible, and if Mario can't get the Star Spirits back then they can't give the Star Beam to Mario so Bowser will remain invincible.

Even when sealed, they were still able to telepathically communicate with Mario. It's not hard be believe that if he kept the sealed Star Spirits together, they'd be able to pool their power together to resist him. Especially with Peach nearby, giving them somebody more than willing to channel their power. The only issue is, the flying castle is the only place impossible for Mario to access without help. If he did need to separate the Star Spirits to prevent them from pooling their power together, he wouldn't have had much of a choice. The real mistake was his choice of minions to guard them. I admit, some of them were pretty good choices, but some of them were pretty terrible. (Looking at you, Koopa Bros. The only reason they got a Star Spirit wasn't competence, it was because Bowser has an ego the size of the kingdom, and that Bowser doll stroked his ego perfectly.)

And Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story REALLY gives him the spotlight, because he didn't defeat the Dark Star (along with Mario and Luigi) just for being good. If anyone was gonna take over a kingdom, it's gotta be him.

My theory on the peach music glitch: to save room on the cartridge I suspect the "emotion" theme and normal peach theme are the same audio file, and the game dynamically adjusts the pitch of the emotion theme when playing. However, when the track loops, the programmers forgot to also tell the theme's pitch modifier to loop so it ends up just playing the original theme instead. Since you can get through all the dialog before the track loops, it makes sense that this bug may of made it past QA testing.

Chugga is actually wildly wrong here, probably because he's tone-deaf. The two songs are not the same, like, at all. They are two separate songs, and they are two separate files in the game's code (I extracted the game's sequences myself to verify this). The issue seems to arise from the fact that while they are different files, they are technically part of the same song, with the somber balcony theme being segment1_subsegment1 of the song, and segment0_subsegment0 & subsegment2 and segment1_subsegment4 (yes there no subsegment 3 at all) all being the regular peach theme. What appears to be happening is that after it loops it changes to a different subsegment of the song, but that's very strange because the somber balcony section is only 22 seconds long, and yet it plays for 44 seconds in this section of the game meaning the game has to loop it at least 1 time, so the song change is most likely intensional.

Now that we are at the Crystal King, I can finally share my story about playing Paper Mario for the first time when I was 5 years old. I played Paper Mario a lot when I was in my Elementary School’s after school care. They had a N64 with Paper Mario in it with 4 save files. One was in the Prologue with Goombpapa, the second was in the Koopa Bros Fortress (and I thought it was the final level for some reason), the third was in the Crystal Palace, and the Fourth was right before the Crystal King. I remember me and my fellow 5-8 year olds not understanding what the heck this game was besides that Mario guy from Smash 64 and Mario Kart 64 being made of paper but we tried our best to beat him. None of us have ever played an RPG before. Heck we probably never played a Single Player game besides maybe a few minutes of Ocarina of Time. We just tried our best. I remember using Watt because I thought their attack looked the coolest. I think we were able to use action commands but i’m not sure. Anytime we hit him he just gained back HP. I think the lowest we got him to was half or maybe slightly lower but that was it. I remember going back into the Crystal Palace to try to find anything to beat the boss and being absolutely mesmerized in how the mirrors looked. I didn’t even know a game could have colors like that or could look this good. Everything just felt different and I was at peace…before an enemy ran up and probably beat me. I also remember never using any star powers because I thought they were permanently gone if I used them for some reason. I forgot about my experiences this game and this boss until 2017 when one of my favorite KZbinr’s Fawful’s Minion made a countdown list of the top 10 best Paper Mario Bosses. I watched it late at night just having fun with him talking about every boss in fun ways. Until the number 2 slot when I was faced with him. Those eyes, that music, it all brought me back and reminded me of the hopeless and despair this guy gave me and my friends. I stayed up for at least another hour just remembering all of the times we fought this freeze freak and the wacky action commands and moves that we used in an attempt to defeat him. Even though Paper Mario isn’t a game I think is amazing today, it will always hold a special place in my heart for that. That’s the story of a Paper Mario that had 5 year olds fighting this old icy lookin dude with no clue how to beat him.

That's awesome! The closest I ever had to having played a console at school was Just Dance for the Wii XD. The fact that someone went out thier way to progress through the game and make save files for different areas just so some little kids can try them is very sweet. What a great memory that is!

The Book of Mario version of the Crystal King...doesn't actually say anything too funny, though Fatguy and friends did read his dialogue together to give him a voice of the legion (which is something that could've worked for him here, given the atmosphere surrounding the fight). What is interesting is the changes in context. In Book of Mario he's called the King of Kings, and is heavily implied to be God. Fittingly enough, when Mario defeats him, the end-of-chapter narration states that the end of the world is near. It also ominously asks if you want to be free forever instead of saving Peach. (In the original streams Fatguy and friends also cooked an item called a "Lamb" with the ominous description of "It's over" after completing this chapter, but as that's a recipe they could have theoretically cooked earlier that's just more of a fun coincidence than anything.) ...In the midst of all this buildup, Goverman (Goombario) also calls the King of Kings "one of Browser's main boys" (not too far off from the original description, funnily enough) and randomly talks about having a piece of glass that he keeps dropping.

This takes me back to when I first encountered the Crystal King, for a time, he was one of the more frustrating bosses to deal with. I couldn't dodge against his stupid ice beam attack, didn't have any Shooting Stars, or Thunder Rages, and my star power was gone, it was a roll of the dice trying to find the real one. And his healing move, I can't count how many times I lost to him and Huff N. Puff as a kid. When I finally beat him, it was an incredible feeling like yeah, "I burned your butt, you icy old fart!". I was a dumb kid when I got this game in 2001, but now he's child plays like some of the more insane bosses like Huff N. Puff and Kent C. Koopa. I'll never forget all the times being frozen by his stupid ice beam attack.

One side of me wants to know more and hope we get see to him come back in a future game with emphasis on his backstory... but the other part loves that he's remained a mystery for so long. About the Feeling Fine badge, its description only specifies poison and dizziness so I actually thought it was limited to protecting Mario from those two statuses. As a result, the Crystal King is the boss that killed me the most amount of times on my first time playing because I kept getting frozen. It was only when I finally got the timing to guard the freezing attack I finally managed to win. I've never been so happy to hear the end of chapter music, and the moment's pretty poetic too since this is the last time to hear that soundtrack in the game. While I'm at it, for music that's very happy, its name, A Kingdom in Chaos, sounds unfitting for it in my opinion.

One of my favorite memories of battling the Crystal King is the time Goombario one shot him. The method was pretty simple: Goombario charges every turn, while Mario just tanks the damage and heals when needed. Sure, it makes the fight longer than it needs to be, but with the music, I'd say that's not much of an issue for me.

Back in 2016 I made a King Sombra joke during Masae's own playthrough of this game. But yeah, he's kind of a one-and-doner, much like Sombra himself is - and serves even less of a purpose! At least Sombra brainwashed everypony he looked at and enslaved the rest! All the Crystal King gets to do is say "Bowser sent me here to guard a Star Spirit", have a (hard, granted) boss fight, then die.

Kooper having an elemental advantage against Crystal King isn't actually doing him any favors. Why? Because Fire Shell isn't programmed to ignore Defense like Fire Flowers are. In other words, you're paying 5 FP to do 1 extra damage over Watt's regular attack. Watt is by far the optimal Partner for this fight. Also, he equipped Double Dip and didn't even use it when he had the perfect opportunity to do so. Incredible. There's a bit more about Crystal King's AI that dictates whether he's going to heal or not. First, as Emile mentioned, his HP needs to be below a certain threshold. Second, his AI then compares his remaining HP with yours. If the difference is past a certain value, he'll heal. If not, he'll attack. Speedrunners and high-level players therefore purposefully keep their HP low to keep Crystal King from healing. Bowser has a similar mechanic.

I LOVE THIS BOSS THEME!!! It is my favorite boss theme in the whole paper mario series (excluding the final boss themes) it is a mix of Serene and intensity the serene being the beauty of the crystal palace and the battlefield and the intensity that your facing bowser's strongest men and the final star spirit is on the line and bowser's castle is within reach. I love it so much I can't stop gushing about it.

Best chapter, best fight and capped off by the best built scene for the final chapter! When it dawned on me that not only was Twink hurt in that scene but also that Bowser robbed me of my last Playable Paper Peach segment, when I was a kid, I got mad! In a good way. It was the first time I was ever ready to beat a game! Even before Pokémon Red! I only ever beat Kirby Super Star before, not counting Smash 64. I hadn’t even beat Mario 64 at that point! I just needed to make it to the end! I had to beat Bowser for taking away my favorite part of the game! Screw the kidnapping! Screw the Kingdom Wide War! Bowser must pay for taking away Twink and Peach’s playable segment!

Freeze! (The Crystal King’s boss theme) has always reminded me of Kirby music. Actually, Crystal King just kinda feels like a Kirby boss, in a good way.

Man Crystal King what a phenomenal boss i love the track also. 2:23 what an entrance there buddy. The whole real body thing was a pain for me because i ran out of both healing and star power. 4:08 What a beautiful way to just shut you up about Kooper 😂😂😂 5:06 what are the odds of failing that 4 times? 5:29 she just wanted to get the spotlight. 5:42 Kooper has the power of triggering the virtual console menu 😂 6:50 So random tangent i actually loved that sound effect that i actually tried and just imitate it. 7:32 After 34? Huh that's good to know thanks that info man also the 3 healing limit i thought it was only for certain final boss. At least you got to show all of his attacks. And with this we saved Kalmar and MAN I ALWAYS THOUGHT HE WAS SAD NEVER THAT WAS A MOUSTACHE!!!! And i played Mario Party 5 first...also END OF CHAAAAAPTER!!!! 11:12 THAT'S REALLY COOL!!!!! Man what a detail i love it so much. 13:44 And bye Twink we'll see you...someday. Man we're so close to the end next time more stuff i guess this isn't over yet!

Ah the Crystal King, how I remember the Golden Days of Mario Bloopers, see I didn’t know Paper Mario was a thing back when I was little, so by the time I was 9 and found KZbin I saw this incomplete series of Mario Bloopers called Mario Wrath of the Ice God. A Mario Pokemon crossover blooper series where the Crystal King from this very game was the main antagonist

The Crystal King battle theme is just really good. So, ngl I went with a tank build, and it kind of stalled out my fight a little, but I was practically in no danger of dying any time soon. Also, I went with Sleep Stomp, and I got to see the Crystal King's rare Sleeping Animation (I say 'rare' because it's a tad hard to get sleep to work on him).

I never saw Kalmar's mustache as a mouth until you mentioned it. It always looked like a mustache.

My first thought when I saw the title? "Another boss bites the dust." I should say "snow" since we are on Shiver Mountain, and I said what I wanted to say about Grodus being a reskin/reverberation of this fight in last the video's comment. And with Kalmar, the quiet star with the (not so epic) mustache, this makes all seven Star Spirits that have been rescued. Oh horrors for what Bowser and Kammy have in store for Peach... or maybe not, considering where we are going after Emile gets his post Chapter 7 errands done.
