This is a highlight reel from when I recorded Paper Mario Sticker Star for it's review, some of it was even in the review itself. This is just for World 1, each part will be a different world. Sorry this took so long to get out, it's long over due, but I wanted to take a break from Paper Mario to do some smaller things. I'm now back to continue with Paper Mario, first up is getting these highlights done.

Can’t wait to see your review on color splash heard it was a less bad version of sticker star and also can’t wait to see your opinion on origami king cause it left me mixed had somewhat fun with it the first play through but trying to playing again I got so bored after the first main boss so it’s leaving me mixed

"the game is polished" while talking about the lack of glitches just makes me think of how, in the world you get the bowling ball, using it against the boss has a high chance of causing the game to crash. XD

I just watched your Sticker Star review, and I want to thank you sir. It felt good to sit down and watch a video which delves deep into the fundamentals on what makes it, in our shared opinion, a horrible game on its own and even more so when looking at what it did for the series. Thank you for such a good deep dive and I'm very interested in your thoughts on Origami King if and when you get around to reviewing it!

Huh, didn't realize that. Never really used it much as it seemed kind of pointless, though that would give it more use. The hurlhammer jokes are mostly just because it's funny to say hurlhammer lol.

i'm gonna compile all my thoughts from watching the video into one big comment to prevent spamming the comments section with my own thoughts. 2:20 - i have only played this game twice. once was the game first came out and i was maybe like 8 or so years old, and i beat it normally, and i remember liking it a lot, although my perception of the game was later colored by how everyhone else thought about it. the second time was about a week or so ago, where i payed it largely out of curiosity as to whether it was as bad as people said it was. i didn't like the game, and realized at about world 2 that i wasn't really having fun. despite this i decided to 100% the game. the "do x action way more time than you'd ever get normally playing the game" flags were the worst part of 100% because i had to grind to get it and it was like 5 hours extra added to my playtime just doing that. 6:10 - there are absolutely multiple wish macguffins in the mario universe. off the top of my head theres the stars from super mario rpg, the star rod from 64, the beanstar from superstar saga, and the sticker comet i guess? 8:20 - i recently did playthroughs of every mainline kirby game in order, and when i got to the ds games, getting used to b being attack and y being jump caught me off guard because i was used to it being the reverse of that in kirby super star. i eventually got used to it but the first hour was a bit frustrating because i refused to use the a button to jump because using a and b is less convenient for how my hand is placed than b and x. 10:40 - if i remember correctly, there are actually some cases where the game just straight up crashes if you use the wrong thing sticker on a boss. the only case that comes to mind at the moment are using the bowling ball on gooper blooper. this feels kind of egregious because one of the mechanics of the game is using thing stickers you got on the boss, and the bowling ball is found in world 3, so its very likely that just by testing thing stickers (because the game doesn't really tell you what to use), that you could find this crash. 15:00 - god, the constant mentioning "i'm made of paper, get it? funny!" really does take me out of the world. color splash also kind of trakes me out of the world, although thats more in the fact that every piece of dialogue is a joke. the games refusal to take itself seriously just made the world feel kind of fake. i was gonna say flat but i refuse to stoop to the game's level. 19:40 - the toad in the bush had me stuck both when i was a kid and also on my most recent playthrough. 20:58 - i don't know how much of this game looking mediocre is the 3ds and how much is just sticker star being not very good. 25:54 - ah inventory space. my least favorite part of this game! i remember as a kid not liking that you could only have 10 items in 64, but at least in 64 your items werent also all your attacks ever. 28:57 - god, i almost forgot how much i despise chapter 3. chapter 2 was when i realized i wasn't really having fun, but chapter 3 was miserable the entire time. 33:20 - being able to hit npcs with your hammer is a definite improvement over the past games for sure. 34:25 - i don't think the game tells you that you can move stickers in your album. i don't think the game tells you a lot of things actually. like the game doesn't tell you that circles of red flowers indicate upgrade blocks and circles of blue flowers indicate invisible blocks, which is a consistent thing throughout the whole game thats just... not conveyed. remember when games actually conveyed information to you in a useful manner? can't have that now, good game design isn't allowed anymore. 38:55 - ouch i felt that one in my bones. 42:07 - same, its like a pathologic thing in my brain that compels me to 100% games even if its not worth it or the game isn't very good. in this game's case it's both! 46:35 - the fact that theres no tattle log or even any form of tattling is such a bummer. even though theres no tattle log i still tattled every enemy in 64 because i felt like it and it gave me a sense of satisfaction having all enemies tattled. this game doesn't do any of that. 50:50 - the fact that thing stickers makes it so your key items are also attacks is cool in theory, but the fact that you can waste key items makes the whole concept kinda suck. 59:17 - i don't know if i'd say color splash and origami king are "good" per se, in my opinion they're more "less bad than sticker star", which isn't really a compliment. origami king i think manages to hit the acclaimed spot of "just okay" 1:02:23 - not only that, but origami king also has you have a basic jump and hammer that never break, so you always have an attack option no matter what. 1:07:36 - i don't think i used a frog suit sticker in my entire playthrough. i don't even know what they do, and honestly i don't care enough to find out. 1:10:52 - at least sticker star *has* an hp bar and damage numbers. color splash doesn't even have that. 1:12:01 - oops you accidentally mentioned a far more likable and interesting character. we can't have _those_ in our game. 1:13:03 - yeah for sure. i'll probably leave more in depth thoughts on color splash after the review for it comes out, but i definitely feel like color splash is better than sticker star in some ways but worse in others. 1:14:09 - baahammers do less damage than worn out hammers, and sleep heals enemies, so i would hesitate to call them "useful" for anything except like, one use in chapter 5. 1:15:30 - you know the fact that theres no gross sticker residue left over after you peel a sticker is the most unrealisting thing about this game. 1:21:10 - "if you don't compare it to the previous games" not comparing it to the previous games is a weird thing to do when its got the same name as the previous games. its still called "paper mario", and so comparing it to other paper mario games is basically inevitable. not comparing it is just weird. and even without comparing its not very good. if i were to give this game *any* credit, it would be that the game is slightly more tolerable if you have prior knowledge of what to do, but its still not exactly fun. not like the first 3 are really fun or the next 2 have fun moments. this game is one long "ughhh" that lasts like 20 hours. 1:25:12 - this might be the only time in the game where you get any reward for beating an enemy thats not a boss. 1:26:44 - at the very least color splash turns things into cards instantly. you have to sit through a 10 second cutscene but at least you don't have to back track. 1:29:36 - sticker star basically made a whole game about back tracking and people don't really talk about it. 1:30:40 - this isn't directly related to whats happening but the fact that theres a poison mushroom here, in a roundabout way it sort of reminded me of how this game removed the cooking mechanic, which was a thing i actually really liked about all 3 of the original games, and that the later 2 didn't add back. 1:41:55 - someone on the design team thought that having the bosses require a specific thing sticker was a good idea, and someone on the color splash design team thought it was such a good idea they should bring it back for that game. 1:43:15 - luigi bigfoot confirmed? 1:43:37 - that toad in that house exists literally to tell you the solution to the puzzle in 1-3 and nothing else. he doesn't change his dialogue for the entire game. 1:43:48 - the right half of flags are the pointlessly tedious ones and the left half are the ones that actually meaningful to do. i went out of my way to try and fill out those flags through normal gameplay and i only got about a quarter through by the end of the game and just had to grind to get the rest. the only positive about this game is that it helped me appreciate the original trilogy even more, by making me realize what aspects this game lacks that those games have.
