Honestly feel that Ceave missed the mark a bit on that. Would the group so vocal about women's representation not have any influence on how they are depicted in media? To call them "woke" is probably the most accurate way to describe these people. They are ironically very conservative in a lot of their ideas of gender and they often work on a mob mentality, i.e, without much individual thought towards what is actually being presented. To be fair, I am not trying to label every one of these people as an idiot, but the majority certainly are. They are akin to the ones calling for religious censorship in media that you hear about happening all the time in the 90s, I'd say. I personally think the new dialogue is funnier and a bit more appropriate for the target age.

Something about the Goomba bit, it may actually be important to show those scenarios to children with vagueness. Children, like it or not, end up victims of behavior like that. Saying no to strangers who try to get close or say weird things is a great lesson to teach especially since if Tik Tok is anything to go by as children aren't being raised by their parents. It is why even topics like death are addressed through stories to help prepare children or help them come to terms. We don't live in a utopia, and innuendos have been used to add double meanings so kids could understand this person was bad while protecting them from those innuendos being used against them all while adding a deeper story for the entire family. Knowing this stuff can literally save lives, a kid can save their friend or know to say no. There is a line to be drawn, a kid doesn't need to see someone using a Donut for example as it won't help and is just weird.
@PoopHobbit9 күн бұрын
I think this is why the game was changed though, because the goal is to sell as many copies as possible. You're describing a debate parents have all the time "how much sheltering is too much shelter?" But that's for parents to decide, right? If you want to sell your game, you make it as "uncontroversial" as possible so parents don't worry about the type of scenarios that might be lurking in games they aren't going to play themselves. They don't have to worry about their kids asking "why are these Goombas making goombella uncomfortable?" If they're not ready to discuss it. So... idk man. I would be considered a hard-core feminist and self identify as a communist and I don't give a shit about this kind of thing, but I'm not about to start telling my friends to start exposing their kids to shit I was because I turned out fine. Worrying about this is just tilting at windmils.
@jeluenhayo24104 ай бұрын
I would say that in the "who's the real culprit" segment - the Corporate Greed actually faked his own death because he was the reason behind it all. I want to remind you that the "ratings system" primarily affects the sales of the game, cutting part of its audience, hence Nintendo literally removed game's initial artistic vision to get more preferable rating to sell more copies.
@King_Luigi4 ай бұрын
Except that Europe & Japan gave it a "higher than Everyone" rating and it's doing just fine. I doubt bumping it up to an E10+ over here would've done all that much to it. Quite a few Mario-related games have had that rating over the years and you don't see them hurting.

While we’re on the topic, why would his death less anyone to draw a conclusion about his guilt or innocence? If there’s any given connection, I missed it. If there isn’t, then there’s some kind of logical fallacy going on here.

@jeluenhayo24104 ай бұрын
@@King_Luigi That's correct, but even if they did good - with lower rating they could've done even better. You know, "no limit to corporate greed" after all :D I'm sure that any game would bring generally more profits the less its age rating is (cuz more people would buy it for their kids).
@maromania74 ай бұрын
@@King_Luigi The original was Japan's lowest rating, it only got bumped to Cero B (higher than everyone) with the rerelease. Which they couldn't really do anything about, since the issue was rating system changes, they'd have to remove entire systems and basically all of rogueport. As for EU, Nintendo mostly just cares about the Japanese market and (to a degree) the North American market. The NA market is 45% of the global gaming market (with the US being the vast majority of that). Add in all the extra money you need to spend on localization and advertising in Europe, it's worth selling in but they don't care nearly as much about it. They'll consider shifting some details to get a bigger chunk of NA, if they'll remove the game corner in pokemon they'll happily change a few lines of dialogue. Hell, they did that in the original version too. The vivian lines everyone talks about weren't added, just actually translated this time. You might think it wouldn't do much, but they have the numbers not just conjecture. And even if you were right...why risk less money when you can change a few words and be more likely to have more money? "Not hurting" isn't good enough for a company, the "more money" option will always be picked unless there is a strong reason.

40:30 They were going for a glossy cardboard look, which can be shiny like that in real life. It's a case where I get what they were going for, but I'm just not a fan of it. I prefer to feel like I'm in the scene rather than feel like I'm looking at a diorama of the scene. I realize that's kind of silly considering the entire game has a paper aesthetic, but for whatever reason, the reflections hit differently. With that said, they bothered me less and less the more I played, so it's really not that big of a deal.
@deraile4 ай бұрын
I think it's not a case of either "go for a paper aesthetic" OR "fit the scene". It can totally be both... Matte paper exists, they don't NEED to go for a glossy finish on every ground surface... I don't see how that's so important towards having a paper aesthetic. It's just ONE of the ways to achieve it. And yeah in many cases it simply doesn't fit. With that said, like you it didn't bother me much. In fact, I only noticed it when I had a quick look online about 3/4 of the game in, and saw people were mad about it. So now I see it, and I agree it doesn't fit, but it's definitely one of the smallest flaws the remake has, IMO.

A funny speculation is that Nintendo has an ongoing project of leading new talented development teams to do remakes of their most successful titles so they can reverse engineer their success while trying to prove their worth. So then Nintendo demands this Dev team that made an AMAZING remake to do a new game similar to the remake and they make some kind of masterpiece (Metroid Dread, BoTW, etc) The one thing that made me HYPE, is that speculation says the same team that worked on Origami King is the team that worked on TTYD remake and will probably work in the next paper mario games. If that is true, we are for sure getting a new banger of Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario (in the style of the first two games).

Another special aspect of this game that isn't talked about much is how how much continuity there is with the previous game. A bunch of characters mention Toad Town; Kolorado's dad's corpse is in Hooktail castle; the rat guy travels to Dry Dry Desert and Mt Rugged and encounters Buzzar; Jr. Troopa shows up in one of the email photos; and even Lady Bow shows up in Poshley Heights. It really makes it feel like you're in the same world as before. I haven't played all of the Paper Mario or M&L games, but I don't think any of them reference each other nearly to this degree.

that’s so cool !! i have only played super paper mario, so i can’t say if it refecences anything else, but i think that game was really trying to feel strange and alien, so i wouldn’t be surprised if they purposefully avoided any references to the previous games in the series. like, i remember the first level feeling very deeply mario-like, but after that, it was so incredibly unique and otherworldly. i think that worked in the game’s favor. not sure if i added anything to the discussion, but there u go lol

Dream Team referenced back to Superstar Saga and Bowser’s Inside story, and Bowsers inside story refers back to Partners in time where we learn these versions of the bros fought Princess Shroob as babies Other than that…uhhh…. Not much. But Superstar saga(the remake specifically) happened for them, so Not like the timeline is borked or anything.
@Ah0yKatie4 ай бұрын
A lot of the PM64 mentions were mistranslated to something else in the Gamecube release - Toad Town to "Mushroom Town," Crystal Palace to "Goomstar Palace," etc. The remake went out of its way to restore all of those mistranslations and further cement the continuity which was pretty cool.
@volvoman52624 ай бұрын
Most of these are not continuety, they are references, there is a diffrence
@rainpooper70884 ай бұрын
Having played both, I'd say Mario&Luigi had much stronger continuity than the OG Paper Mario games. Dream Team alone is so full of references to the first three games, there's no point in even trying to name them all. There is also the occasional overarching development like Starlow joining the main cast starting with BIS or Fawful spending the first three games going from the villain's sidekick to a shopkeeper trying to swear off evil but struggling with his insanity driving him to plot revenge due to the events of the first game (more or less against his will, that game is surprisingly dark) to him losing said struggle and becoming main antagonist of the third game where he blows himself up trying to take Mario&Luigi with him and subsequently stops appearing. The Shroobs from the second game also get a boss fight in the third one with a little recap of that game's story from the characters, so yeah, these games are in chronological order and all of these things happened. Mario&Luigi was also always very keen on referencing the events of other Mario games, such as Kamek in Partners in Time acknowledging that he tried to kidnap the Baby Bros not too long ago (Yoshi's Island) or even Toadette mentioning that she's an adventurer herself (Captain Toad) in Paper Jam. The remakes of these games even added little side stories that not only tie into the plots of their respective games but ALSO have continuity between games, even doing things like playing the battle theme from Minions Quest when the protagonists of that story come to Bowser Jr's aid in Bowser Jr's Journey. This kind of continuity was a wonderful thing and I hope Brothership will have both new lovable characters while also remembering its AlphaDream roots.

You made me add another game to my "will love, must play one day list" which is definitely not too long already. Greatly and thoroughly enjoyed the video, and here's hoping the evil and unpredictable algorithm is kind to it. Much love

Id love more insight into stuff about localization/translations in future videos that woild be cool and is something often underappreciated

When you mentioned that you played Link’s Awakening in German, I, being German myself, immediately knew what you’ll talk about. I may be too young to have experienced that myself, but this translation is legendary.

All your videos are filled with very clever wordplay. Constantly dropping very subtle but sly word substitution. You often brilliantly play around saying anything but the word you should be using. Such a low-key yet bright way to enhance your videos. Truly a very *smart scheme.* A perceptive procedure. A genius structure. An erudite arrangement. I'm closing the thesaurus.

You have in my opinion such a nuanced taste in games id love if you made a video similar to supereyepatch wolf where you just talk about your favorite medias from the past of your favs from 2024 :)

I really like the way your videos are structured, particulary this one! It's also always nice to get to know some philosophers.

6:54 Hey, that's that guy that says "You dumb video game heroes always pull this stuff. It's ridiculous! You think violence solves everything, don't you? Huh? DON'T YOU?!?" And I couldn't agree more

What an awesome video! Now, I didn't watch it yet, but whenever Ceave uploads, I know it will be a banger. Otherwise, I will edit this comment later. Edit: Watched 5 minutes, it already exceeded my expectations.

I love that Bowser's story is so thematically pointless that it doesn't merit a mention

Almost all of the UI problems you talk about at 21:21 only exist in the Switch remake. In the original Gamecube version the menus and stuff are much snappier and less laggy. You said "the UI is the one area of the game that could still be improved significantly" for a possible direct sequel, but it was already significantly better back in 2004.

the beauty of this game is that it was nostalgic out the gate so many tropes from right out the gate are played totally straight in a way that only mario can do, to this day i want to have a dnd session with a train mystery because of this game

I actually played through the game with almost the exact same glass cannon build, lol. Invested like two level-ups into HP, and then everything else went straight into badge points. Honestly a super fun way to experience the game! A few bosses could easily wreck me in just one or two hits, which prompted me to use the parry more often, thus creating some intense risk-reward situations.

The final boss of paper mario: NO, YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO OBEY ME! The 7 crystal stars: anyway, the different phylosophical and historical background in every single one of those is quite interesting, I can't wait for Ceave to solve all of phylosophy 10 videos down the line as well as uncover all of the video game conspiracies

I honestly don't know why they got rid of the partners and badges. I'm just glad games like Bug Fables and Sea of Stars are filling that void.

I actually like the reflections--dirt and unfinished paper aren't reflective, yea. But glossy print paper is for sure. You can even tell on some traditionally non-reflective surfaces, the reflections is really dull or blunt, like it's more of a magazine page and less of a sheet of construction paper.

The Remake was the first time I played TTYD and it became my Game of the Year. It's really that good!

Menuing and text speed are definitely the biggest downgrades to me between GameCube TTYD and the remake. Battling commands and pause menu movement were super quick and snappy in the old version, but now there is so much unnecessary delay. You also used to be able to button mash through all game text to skip it, but that’s just not possible now at all. Such a simple change hurts replayability so significantly.
