A note for the watercolor paper: you're using "cold press" paper, which, yes, is rough. Cold press watercolor papers have that tooth for granulation (some watercolor pigments separate out and give interesting effects). If someone is looking for a smooth watercolor paper, go for "hot press"! 😊

Winsor and Newton Marker Pad Anecdote: Before they rebranded from Letraset. This paper was called "marker sketch paper". It's only supposed to be used for simple marker sketches, and comics (like manga), so it's supposed to handle good large flats and cell shading. Plus it's easy to trace your sketches on there. To use it for a "painting" with many layers of color is no good. Just as you say. Just thought I'd throw that in here. Thanks for a great paper review Baylee! Paper is sooo important. (even more so than the paints sometimes I'd say).

I've used cardstock ever since I first got my copics so I'm fortunate I started on something that isn't awful to work on. I decided to splurge on x-press it blending card, but I was really disappointed when using it. It felt like I had downgraded. I'm not a fan of the glossy finish (I prefer the matte finish that comes with cardstock) and I noticed that the ink dries splotchy. It's not extremely noticeable, but it is something that the eye is drawn to when you're laying down a lot of color on a big area of your piece.

@Kanji.The.Bloodedge8 жыл бұрын
Canson's mixed media paper works so well with Copic and Prisma colour markers along with water colour. I also find the comic pad (I forgot the actual name for it sorry) from Canson as well works amazing with Copic as I use that for my comic as the paper weight I think is 180. But those are the paper types I use and they are amazing and I mostly use recycled sketch paper for regular sketching artwork. Hope this was useful for someone!

Baylee I wish I had watched your videos before I went to class! I bought a Canson "Bleedproof" Marker pad and the Mepxy markers with no brush tip! The pad acted exactly like your Winsor + Newton Marker Pad...not only did it bleed through but I struggled to blend, which probably wasn't helped by the use of the chisel tip Mepxy's instead of the brush tip ones. Aside from being a beginner I feel a bit better knowing my struggle had something to do with the tools I was using! Your videos have helped me SOOO much! Thank you!

Honestly my Canson 98 lbs. Mixed Media paper can lay down color very flat and very nicely. And yes, it really does blend the best from everything I've tried. Even a grey to pink blend is possible if you take it slow. Only downside is that yes, sometimes 2 pages of very large areas can eat a marker up. The color vibrancy isn't really a big deal to me, but I also work in more muted tones, I'm not a fan of obnoxious brightness.

if you want smooth watercolor paper then get hot press. Think of it like an iron: a cold iron doesn't smooth the wrinkles but the hot iron makes it super flat and smooth :)
@Sakuems8 жыл бұрын
thanks for that video !! totally agree with the "marker" paper, i hate it so much ahaha ! it's good for basic coloring like cellshading because it's a very clean/flat coloring but for anything else, it just doesn't behave properly. I think the best combo is like finding the balance between small amounf ot feathering so you can still move the color but also being able to "take" enough layers without looking blotchy. Since you couldn't test them all and the one i have is hard to find the US, i am personally using the Perfect Coloring paper (i used in my Nemesis and Mad witch artwork) and it has one of the best features i've tried because it's not bleeding much but still allows you to move the colors. However, i was surprised to see you say that cardstock wasn't ok wih pencils because i use them all the time ^^; The only downside of this paper i use is that the vibrancy is hard to get as all colors seem to be a bit washed out. I guess it's hard to find the perfect paper but it really really depends on the coloring style you're going for but no matter what you choose, paper is definitely essential and can change everything. What i don't like is that Marker brands recommend the "layout" paper for beginners but IMO it's one of the hardest to use. Anyway, thanks again for spending that much time into comparing all this paper !! ;D I'm sure it'll help a lot of people :3

I found a paper from Daler and Rowney and it is called Airbrush, with a green cover. I don't know what it is similar to in terms of the papers you've just shown. I use to use the Winsor and Newton and then I wanted a more sturdy paper as you mentioned. I tried Bristol Board Smooth but then found the Airbrush paper. You should try it cause I love a professional opinion on it, which I am most certainly not, I'm just a clown who loves to try a draw lol, but love to know if anyone else has used the Airbrush paper.

I'm a bit confused now because ... well what's the difference between cardstock and bristol board ? XD cause i have bristol, and i tried the xpressit blending card and i didn't see much differences ... and last time i tried to paint on bristol, it was horrible ... i wonder if the same "bristol" or if it depends on brands
@asylumlane8 жыл бұрын
Bristol is usually thicker than cardstock. The one I have feels like two or three sheets of cardstock stuck together.
@rachel7488 жыл бұрын
From what I understand, Bristol board is traditionally made from cotton fibers, whereas card stock is made from paper pulp (wood fibers, waste paper, etc.)
@Lexouchan8 жыл бұрын
Ça fait un moment que je me pose la question aussi ! j'ai utilisé pas mal de bristol avant d'utiliser le papier Deleter et les propriétés qu'il avait étaient les même que quand elle parle de "cardstock" donc bon ^^"
@erin98688 жыл бұрын
There's a bigger difference between cover stock and Bristol. Cover stock is coated on both sides - it makes it super smooth and slightly shiny. Bristol is uncoated. Except when it's Bristol illustration board, which is usually coated on the back. It may be super smooth if it's plate finished (versus vellum - which is not to be confused with old timey vellum or modern day vellum. Jesus, art terms are convoluted), which is similar to hot press watercolor paper vs cold press. Other than that, I've found that Bristol tends to always be acid free and intended for art, but card stock doesn't. Loads of brands are acid free now because of scrap booking, but not all. Bristol is intended for art applications. Card stock is not, really. So they're often marketed very differently, and that can have a big impact on the price. For example, you can buy cover stock in bulk. I've never seen Bristol sold in bulk.

When I was looking for papers in the store, I was looking for Bristol because I heard a lot of good things about it. I _did_ find Bristol, but it was _HUGE._ I can't never make an illustration that big! it was too much for both me _and_ my markers... So I went for the mix media which was in a very ideal size. I guess I made the right choice, since it seems to be better than Bristol when it comes to markers. So far, I really don't have any issues with it and I've had a great experience using it. I mostly just use my sketchbook to draw unless it's a serious Illustration, to save on money. The sketchbook I always use doesn't have a name, and it's just a random pretty cheap one. Then again, I can't afford great paper for daily drawings and sketches... This just proves you don't need the best papers to use markers with if it's just a casual drawing and not a serious illustration. So far some of my most favorite drawings were made in this cheap sketchbook, and I've grown super attached to its beautiful cream colored pages.

This was very helpful. I use primarily cardstock and mixed media paper, so I'm glad to know that they're really the "best" of the options out there without spending extra money to experiment with other types. I personally like to use a cardstock that's slightly toned and I've found a nice "ivory" one but I can't seem to find anything else in the 100 lb range that's got just a hint of color and isn't overly saturated, since it seems to be marketed primarily for scrapbookers. :/
@darkrai498748 жыл бұрын
I like the Strathmore Sketch. I think it's 400 series but not too sure (cover is brown). It's 90 lbs and light but it does a good job with pencil and marker so if I want to do a portrait with pencil/charcoal it works but maybe I want to use marker one day and it'll still work. It's also cream which I think makes white ink pop a little better and the slight color makes it more attractive in my opinion. It's pretty light and thin but surprisingly it holds the marker pretty well and it will bleed just because its light but it's not a huge problem for me. It's also cheap. So good quality cheap paper basically. I also use ink a lot and it works well with ink too. I also like the Strathmore mixed media you mentioned if I want to make a nicer drawing for someone or if I want to use some watercolor.

Wow.. I usually invest more in markers and pens than in paper.... This helped me a lot! It's not like I use the cheapest paper, but it's not extremely thick either. I've always been afraid to use expensive paper because I could mess up. Thanks for making this video, Baylee!

I use a winsor & newton sketchbook and its really good for copics and promarkers because it doesnt bleed to the other page or feather 👌🏻

Thank you for doing this comparison video. All of the paper types can be overwhelming for a beginner.

Thank you for the video Baylee. I appreciate that you emphasize in the end that it's up to an artist's personal preference which paper works best. I have had terrible experiences with using the mixed media paper, but Bristol's worked well for me. I like to work with watercolors and want to try more layering with copics and colored pencils, but the way one goes about doing that can be vastly different even from someone else using the same tools, so giving those different papers a try is certainly worth it.

Well, I just recently expanded my Copic collection, thanks for this video! Looks like I need to get some new paper since I'm using the Copic paper right now. I even bought 6 of those.. Wow. Also, to be quite honest, I think the Copic paper still kind of works for me. I'm doing large drawings and I don't blend too much so heavy paper would be the wrong choice. I think I might go with the Hammermill or the multimedia paper.. Not too sure yet. I love my Copics and I'm glad to be in this community! It's so nice to have them. :)

my favourite papers for markers are Borden & Riley Paris paper for pens (which behaves like a card stock), Bee company marker pad (a bit thicker than the borden and riley) and mixed media paper by Canson. All of these work really well for me and do all my projects with them :) watercolour paper, I can't help but think that if you're aiming to maximize the use of the paper's tooth for layering pencil crayons on top and such, don't waste expensive marker dyes on this paper as your base colours!

I don't know if it's available outside of the Netherlands but I really like to work with the "blue pad" paper. Works really well with my W&N brush & pro markers and copics but the cheap dollar store knock offs feather a lot

The Hammeril 80 lb Cover works well too and a lot of reviews say it's almost as good as the 100 lb, just not a touch thinner, and easier to find. So it will have a chance of bleeding through if you "go to town" on it.
