My first job out of school was working as a trainee architectural technician with an architects office in Sunderland. Part of the work involved surveying sites using sights like that one, though mostly it was levelling work. I wasn’t qualified or trained to use the sights as I was just a teen, so I got the fun job of porting the levelling staff about the muddy and cold sites and being instructed to stand over there, now over there, over there, hold it upright, move over there and so on…

Renee, I have to say how refreshing it is to hear your NJ accent when you do your videos. I'm originally from Rahway, NJ, now I live in south Jersey where most of the people around here sound like Philadelphians. It's good to hear a real Jersey lady. Those Disney items are probably worth a decent amount of money, it's cool to see that someone really liked Eeyore, he's such a sweet character created by A.A. Milne. That pick/axe looks like it has some age, and it may have been from a fire fighter.

Rene, wash the moldy scented stuff w/ white vinegar. at least a 1/2 cup to the machine. more wont hurt. also add it to the rinse. maybe even let it soak. hang in the sun to dry. white vinegar is all i use as a rinse agent. it kills a myriad of stinky stuff. there is also a fabric sanitizer from clorox that works wonders. try them both and sell as a bundle of all eyore.

The "wheel" at 3:00 ish is likely a pattern for sand casting metal flywheels in a foundry. It would be packed in sand, then removed from the sand after packing down leaving a cavity which iron would be poured into. It would probably be used with another pattern forming the rim of the flywheel. Cheers!

Transits & Builder's Levels: There are a couple similar tools, that function differently and when you advertise them, it helps to know the basic difference. A Builder's level, is made to move around in a horizontal circle (once the tri-pod is level) to help the builder create level surfaces on a construction site (foundations, walls, etc) The transit offers the enhanced capability to accurately measure angles, by having a second adjustment that allows them to tilt up and and back down, for tasks requiring precise angular measurements such as land surveying. Transits can do the job of a Builder's Level, but can do much more, so they are worth more. These days they are both more for the tool collector or small property owner on a budget, since expensive laser levels have become more the common standard for the building professional. The case label, model info or a google search will show you how to tell them apart. 😉

Interesting item though. 10:40 is what we call a "Theodolit", used for surveying purposes back in the days. Worth around hundred bucks, if it still works and if you find the right buyer. I used it a few times while planning new park areas, but not that often. By the way, Renée: any resolutions, plans, hopes, dreams and wishes for 2025 ?! 🙂 Greets from GER, U.

Had a glitch when typing, so this might appear twice! What we thought was a wheel looks to probably be some type of clothes dryer, obviously the non-electrified kind 😆 At first, I thought it was a chandelier that you would see in a restaurant styled in an old-time western theme. I never assumed that not knowing the Theodolite would cause such a ruckus haha. I've never been afraid of saying that I don't know what something is and certainly will never claim to know anything about tools/instruments. Dreams for 2025... Munich is on the list as well as starting/finishing some research. Hopefully I'll get my channel's logo figured out soon! Wishes... lots of ephemera found at the flea market and maybe a good house cleanout or the best storage unit ever! Aim right, right? Transit is for comparing heights across distances. You set it level on a tripod, then you can swing it around and line up the crosshairs with objects in the distance. We used to use one when building homes to see how good the poured foundation wall guys did their job, and they also helped when building decks. Nowadays, they use laser levels mostly.

The "Scope" you found in the wooden box is called a "Dumpy Level" it is a Surveyor's or Construction Instrument for measuring and calculating Elevation, it would be mounted on a tripod then using a 10 - 15 foot Rod (Rule) placed 25 - 50 feet down range to measure the difference in elevation between the Rod (Rule) and the instrument (level) by line of sight. The difference between the level and the reading on the Rod (rule) is the height. The leveling of the circuit is always started at a known bench-mark elevation then the differences up are added or down subtracted from the height of the instrument at the benchmark in running Talley. As far a valuation goes, it is one of the lesser valued Surveyor's Instruments probably $50 -$100 or so Check current prices on like eBay or some other place that's going to have items like this, a Transit which measures horizontal angles or Theodolite would be worth substantially more.

I don’t share my eBay, for reasons I’ve mentioned in a few other videos. I do have an Etsy shop, but what we are finding in these units really isn’t meant for Etsy. Flea market season is “closed” in my area, except for two year-round markets.
